I did this to my 3 burner bbq... I removed the "heat trapping" flare guards over the burners, put expanded steel over burners then the ceramic briquettes on top. I have a more consistent heat, and don't have to have gas cranked to medium high all the time. I can get good grilling on medium alone which has cut fuel consumption in half!! 😎😎😎😎
just figured out about the rocks on my old Charmglow. thanks for the clear explanation and demo. but maybe your flames are too yellow? I think they are supposed to be all blue. maybe check your gas jets? You saved me a bunch of money for new burners and heat shields!
I'm glad I could help!! I think that the yellow flames were from the grill being completely open and that tank being on the way out. Great observation. I can get my grill crazy hot with this mod, even when it is in the 40s outside. Stay tuned for more hacks and mods around the house and vehicles!
I'm looking to do this with my Lavabox fire pit. I don't feel comfortable cooking over the hades stones it came with. Thanks for sharing what you know!
As drippings have accumulated on the briquets and seasoned them it does have more of a "off charcoal flavor". The sear you can get off this set up is really what drives the flavor home! - Thanks for watching - Jason
Those flavorizer bars are not only for heat distribution, they protect the burners from getting a buildup of cooking grease which could clog up the burners. But good idea anyway, good luck.
Thanks for the input Butch C! I can see how that would be a problem. Not much has made it past the rocks so far. As I'm sure you know maintenance will reduce fire risk tents or not.
So, is the "upper grate" - the grate that the chicken is sitting on - just resting on top of the ceramic briquettes? Is that all there is to it? And it's not a problem?
There is a bevel in the bottom portion of the grill. Every grill is different. Take that measurement and search for a grate that will span it. Place the ceramics down on that new piece of hardware. Then your top grate “grill” (cooking surface) goes on as normal.
I honestly don't remember at this point. The main thing that matters is... A) The grate is small enough to fit in grill B) Big enough to rest on the tabs or landings in bottom of grill that hold grate/heat bars on originally. It doesn't need to be precise. Just strong enough and with enough support to hold about 15 lbs of ceramic coals. Hope this helps, Jason
No. After time once they get enough drippings on them they kinda have that grill smell affect and smoke as they heat and stuff drips on them. But you can add chips on top. Check out this vid. ruclips.net/video/D0qT5eorsKk/видео.html Thanks for watching - Jason

Clay Burch No, I did not have to cut it. Fortunately I was able to get a grate that was slightly smaller than the dimensions of my grill. My advice would be to look for one just slightly smaller than your exact measurements verses one that is the exact dimensions. Even if it is advertised as the same it could be slightly bigger. Cutting could be an option but the less tools and time involved the more value you get out of this mod!
Haha!! Love it. It was my first video trying to just shoot off a phone on a tripod. Trust me, I am not proud of the physique I was rocking back then. But what ever meat you like looking at is cool with me. Thanks for watching (with intention) - Jason
Kind of what inspired this video. Stays alot cleaner with these briquettes because not as much falls down in grill. I hit with the leaf blower before I fire up to get small bits out. - Jason

Does grease not clog up your burners?
@@user-ur1io4ji2q No, it hits the ceramic and vaporizes
I'm doing this to the exact same BBQ! Thanks for the grate link.
No prob!!

May need to try this. I used to have the old cement briquettes years ago. They seemed to work ok.
@Terry Robinson they are a game changer. Especially if it gets cool where you live. Or you appreciate a nice sear on your steak!!
Great video, thanks for your time
Thank you for the complement and your time to watch the content! - Jason
Educational… do you get that char broil flavor we all come to enjoy?

thanks so much.
I wonder why no one just makes ceramic Heat tents?
There are some hi end grills that use ceramic plates. I think the tents might be to fragile? Great product idea!!! Thanks for tuning in!
Nice explanation man about to order a set! What would you recommend for a fire pit, ceramic balls or lava rocks?
Ceramic! - Jason

So if I have a tent over the burner, I don't need the briquettes any longer?
Yup!

Was your rock grate truly 14,5" or 14". Finding it hard to track down a 14.5" which is what I need as well

Does anybody know if it also prevents the propagation of smoke?
It will sizzle. There will be smoke. Not from fire just the juices hitting it
Do bricks help with creating that Smokey flavor?

Did you not replace the metal pieces over your burners?
No. The new grate and the ceramic stones are in place of the metal pieces! Thanks for watching - Jason
Could not work out exactly how the briquttes are supposed to be put on
You need to add another grate where the old heat baffles used to sit. Then just lay them out flat. - Jason
My thermostat has never worked ....any ideas ???
Thermometer on the grill lid?
New stuff? My 1999 turbo bbq has them.

Oh man bro... Appreciate the effort but the angles you have are about you and not the grill. Maybe next time get a shot of JUST the grill. Good luck.
