- I try to beat Dark Souls 3 using only sorcery, even though this is a game based mostly on melee combat. This challenge run should be doable, since this game allows you to regain mana using ashen estus flasks, meaning you can cast as much as you want, you just have to not get hit.
I didn't know if a tutorial video or a challenge video that assumes you know the game was better, so I did a bit of both.

The music was taken from the youtube audio library and from the game's soundtrack. In this case it's all from the Monster Hunter series.
This challenge run was hard, but still fun and I hope funny and entertaining.

I swear I wanted to publish this 10 days after the previous one, but monster hunter rise came out and I got a bit distracted. Hope you like this, the next one should be in a week but since they'll add content to rise in a couple of days I won't promise anything
I have a question throughout all of these you strictly used only your catalyst and a shield or the bell vine. Why did you never do like a simple cestus or a simple shield to give you passive Focus Regen, as there were times with bosses where you couldn't have been able to get a spell off any way? This would have reduced the amount of Ashen Estus you would have needed in some fights.
@@JBuckley1997 I thought about it, but I came to the conclusion that having faster spells with the bell vine or higher stamina regeneration was overall better. The optimal play would have been to switch between the bell vine and the simple cestus, or even having two simple items and switching out the staff too; but I considered it too much cognitive load to remeber all this and never mess up. At best, with two +10 simple weapons you regenerate 0.7 focus per second, and it's low enough that I don't think the juice is worth the squeeze, so to say.

Another thing I will mention for this run: The Magic Clutch ring gives him +15% damage, Bellowing Dragoncrest Ring gets him a +20% damage, and Young Dragon Ring gets him +12% damage. Respectable. With Crown of Dusk’s extra +10% this is +57% total damage as an increase. Now here’s the bit he either did not know, or forgot. The weapon art for Staves, Steady Chant, increases damage usually by 10%. But remember how he talked about the Bellchime? Not all spell tools are the same. The Sage’s Crystal Staff’s Steady Chant actually increases damage by a whopping +30%, the highest buff available, and it applies to other staves. So if he used the Court Sorcerer’s Staff, AND this staff in the left hand to weapon art it, he would have had a +87% damage buff…so remember all those fights he did after the Grand Archives? They could have been easier. So to anyone trying this run, enjoy that. And thanks for the amazing video Plateau Peak!

Yeah I went from not playing it for more than a year to doing 7 different runs in a month and a half
y’know, if you wore the Sage’s ring, it would free your off-hand for other items; this could be used for the Scholar’s Candlestick, a dagger that increases sorcery damage by 10%, or the Sage’s Crystal Staff, which when you use the weapon art increases sorcery damage by 20% even in the main staff for a short time.
And have something simple infused to weild while not in combat for fp regen
while the intent behind this is correct, you'd need the +2 sage ring to compare to the bellvine.
He also could have used the weapon art of the sages crystal staff in the off hand which boosts sorcery damage by 30%

I just completed my first ever run as a knight yesterday, and I really wanted to try out the sorcerer. This video is gonna help me a lot on what to do, even though I'm not going for just sorceries. Amazing video
he didnt realize that he could use farron dart to kill the clones lmao
When fighting the Crystal Sage in my playthrough, I had a slightly different strategy.
I had Farron Dart equipped because of how fast and cheap it is, so when the clones spawned in, I just ran around poking them all once so they disappear.
Yeah in hindsight the best choice is probably to use farron dart to delete the clones and attack the sage only after he uses the homing soulmass, so that he can't teleport

I never knew how much I needed a dark souls with the monster hunter sound track in the back ground.
I think the mana system being called "focus" speaks better to the nature of how it works in game. It would probably take a good deal of concentration to cast spells you memorized in some academy.
(Also weapon arts are self explanatory, I replicate them irl with polypropylene melee weapons I have and they do indeed require some focus and form to pull of, and can be pretty draining)

One trick that I found against the crystal sage during my sorcery run is that Farron dart is actually very helpful in this fight because the clones disappear when they are hit, regardless of the damage you deal, so using farron dart helps save FP and it is extremely fast to cast, allowing you to take them out without leaving yourself too open for attacks

Great run! I often rely heavily on magic in DS3, and I use two spells a lot that you don't; hidden body and pestilent mist. As an example, I normally defeat the princes in 2 attempts; the first "attempt" is just to get a fog wall. Next time I enter but don't move, and cast css few times. He moves really slowly towards me on his knees so I can get health down to about 10 %. Then I avoid his attacks and quickly move up to stand just in front of stairs, and finish him off. They respawn without noticing me right behind them and I cast pestilent mist repeatedly. As it does no stamina harm they just stand there. Big brother will die first, But the other is almost dead too and will go down quickly from offensive attack before he casts wotg. Basta! I truly suck at melee, so this is the only way I could ever beat these guys :D Also fun to kill Wolnir with pm, without him ever waking up.... etc.

I actually followed your guide. Mostly because I'm doing a sorcery run for ds3. The only thing I did different was use pestilent mist on deacons of the deep. When the archdeacon is getting up you can get like 800 dmg with it and use soul arrow paired with it do solid damage
Use pestilent mercury for midir and armor for lots of damage. Also farron darts are good for the sage...

Can you beat dark souls with only boss items( this will exclude before vordt for very obvious reason unless you want something different)
You can only use items that are either obtained through the boss fight (ie storm ruler)
Only items that are also obtained through transposition
Run will be finished once every boss is defeated and one item form every soul is obtained
For crystal sage, I feel like you could have brough along farron dart to dispel the clones for as little fp as possible, giving you a bit more breathing room
To be honest you could've bought the Farron Dart for the Sage's phase 2 and one shot all of the clones and switch to other sorcery, but great videos man

One thing to keep in mind is that the longer/bigger staffs use up more stamina when casting, and also the sorcerer staff (starter staff) is actually better than the heretic staff at high INT until you get the court sorcerer staff which is by far the best staff.
There is an elevator to the right of the Lorain fight hallway that lets you bypass the critical knights patrolling the stairs outside

Tip - for the crystal sage you can use any poison weapon or simply buy poison knives from the merchant ( don't know her name) make him poisoned and stand behind the pillars. It will take time but it's the easiest way so just be patient

Its crazy how much magic in souls type games has changed just look at the spells in elden ring we got lasers that 1 shot bosses, mini moons, crystal machine guns, and meteors not to mention some of the miracles/incantations

So, for anyone wanting to do a run with the Sword spells, please pay attention to the strength requirement for the catalyst. Your spell will do less damage and bounce if you do not meet the strength requirement to wield the stick one-handed, as all Sword Spells are swung one-handed

Instead of bashing my head on a wall when fight Twin Princes, I use Pestilent Mist and watch the world burns. Use the same spell with Dragonslayer as well

I tried sorcery only on maxNG for dark souls remastered. And I enjoyed being a literal God, for the most part (Manus and Kalameet were the only one's who could challenge boss me)

Fun run, I'm trying a sorcery run myself, and pretty much am going pure sorcery by the end, but that's probably not too unusual. Pretty fun to finally get around to playing it myself.
Also, I'm sad I missed the Crown of Dusk, but at the same time, Crystal Sage Hat Drip > a bit more damage.
Also, Great Heavy Souls Arrow is super efficient, you don't need anything close to a perfect run to kill Yhorm with only spells without Siegward. It's actually pretty easy.

You could have done the no hit strategy for Lorian where you walk against the door and abuse the AI only spamming one move

pro tip.... pestilent mist can kill wolner without starting the boss fight.... in other words you can kill him without worrying about chasing down his arms in his sword phase or fight the annoying summoned skeletons and you can get the book right after in the corner of the room....
you can also use that spell for the dancer, you can do this pretty easily at lvl 29 like i did and run straight to ociris. in his boss fight all you have to do is get him to phase 2 and then run to the tree at the back right side and then run behind the tree to get him stuck there and you can spam mist over and over without fear of getting hit
mist also works on mimics without waking them up. and also works really well on sleeping giants. because there too dumb to notice there dying.
so yea use mist as a spell in this challenge to pretty much breeze through the entire game.
if you do kill dancer and ociris early you can also cast mist by the doorway in lothric where the knight spawns and rest at the bonfire and the mist will stay and the knight will stand there looking at the mist slowly dying wondering whats going on. its an easy way to cut like a third of there hp if you struggle at killing them normally because spells are slow and they like it close and personal

Honestly same, I almost got stressed out editing it
Not sure if you were aware, but the pestilent mist spell is insanely good at some of the most obscure things. Its damage doesnt trigger phase shifts, so dragonslayer armour can be killed while in phase 1. Also useful for riskless mimics as they wont activate. If you position yourself correctly you can even kill twin princes second phase for free if you have slumbering dragoncrest.
It's also the easiest way to beat Midir, period, since it ignores his resistances, and Midir is actually a relatively stationary boss if you just stay in front of him, and don't really do anything else
It also pairs really nicely with the, iirc, white birch staff or whatever, the tree branch, because to my knowledge, Mist doesn't really care about spell buff.
I suspect it would also be an ideal way to kill Yorm without Storm Ruler. It's also probably great against Oceiros 'cuz his first phase is so weak, and is kinda stationary too.

Late but for anyone coming over from ER for the first time, Pestilent Mist, Hidden Body, & Slumbering Dragoncrest Ring = End Of Days.
Imagine if you bent the rules and used the moon light blade but only the charged r2 beam attack
Pestilent Mist works wonders on Crystal Sage and I think is a sorcery from Orbek. Dunno if cheeses are allowed, though.
