As always, the perfectionist hard at work. Looks awesome! So much for some chronic nerve pain cutting the job (or video making) short. You are an inspiration, my friend...
H N Sail Thank you so much, Nav :) I hope the search for vessel unnamed is progressing as planned. Talk soon on Skype/Facetime :) Fair winds my friend :)
Really like your videos. Great job. We just bought our first sailboat and your videos were a great inspiration for us to buy our first boat. Keep up the great work and we look foward to the next videos.
I always liked the idea of having recessed shelves in the vberth to make more use of the slanted hull space. You could even use the shorter slats they sent you.
skipper99991 Jökull loves those pigs. This one is number seven ;) I've added the sink cover idea to my list. Thanks for taking the time to leave a comment :)
I love how this project of yours is coming along. Thanks for sharing with us. Suggestions for the extra mahogany: covering for the seats and sole in the cockpit, refinish the surface of the companionway hatch, possibly use it to trim the front of shelves, like in your small locker, to give it a lip or "fiddle" to prevent things from sliding off when underway or healed (yes, I know you already have the webbing door, but that may not stop small things from sliding off the shelf). You could also consider making fiddles for your salon table and maybe kitchen counters (I don't remember if you have these already). Anyway, keep the videos coming. Love them.
You could also use the spare mahogany to make a removable 'Laguna'-style table for the cockpit area. Thanks again for all of your detailed videos and take time off to rest your back --- I definitely agree with those who have suggested some type of back support device !!!
just wanted to let you know i enjoy watching your vids, i consider myself technical and a good worker but i still learned a few things from you ... thanks! for your hard work on those videos
Mads, no need to worry about condensation under the mahogany. In Little Bear (my boat) I have tongue and groove cedar over hard panel insulation. It's been there for 39 years and there's NO sign of condensation. I've slept on the boat a few times and even when it's cold out there is no condensation in the V-birth. I 2nd the motion to use the excess mahogany for the companionway hatch. :)
Try to get yourself a small elastic back support while working. The type of elastic back support you see employees that work in hardware stores or food markets using. Your back injury could get worse over time since your always doing boat improvements etc. Great job with the slats!
Kind of late but after going through the Athena videos, I've stated these. Extra mahogany? Use two to replace the white strips used to mount you "disco" LED strips mounted on the side of the boat (if you haven't done so already). BTW, hopefully we will meet on your next NYC trip.
Hello Mads, Mas, Mass, argg Mr Sail Life :) A thought for your extra wood, on the bulkhead you could put a magazine type rack for sailing mags or folded chart etc. Just a thought. On another note regarding Audio books I am listing to Joshua Slocum, Sailing around the World in his boat single handed. although it was in the late 1800's I thought of you :) when you see his picture you will understand. an excellent audio book. And as I said on that Other Canadians youtube channel, I most eagerly await your next video. Keep up the Great Vids. Although this is the first time I have made comment I have been following closely and have seen All of your vids. Big fan!! if a quiet one.
YES :D The Martian, and you're listening the audiobook, which is the best experience, so far, here's hoping that the movie does the book/audiobook justice.
Mas, I'm starting to add ceiling to my v-berth in my 50 year old trawler. I can't afford mahagony only mahogany stain. What other types of wood would you consider? And what deminisions do you cut the individual pieces? Please use inches as I'm not a metric kind of guy! Thanks! Any other suggestions you can offer would be greatly appreciated.
that's looking really good. gonna have to steal your idea lol.. west system sells syringes that are great for filling little screw holes.. u can clean them out and use them 3 or 4 times, just let the epoxy harden and it pops right out , no messy chemicals to clean them ..
Mate. Have you asked if the company would buy the left over wood back? Really enjoy your videos btw. I was sailing in Denmark last month but had not seen your channel then. I fly back to NZ today too. Looking forward to following your progress.
Simon Reffin They won't buy back the left over wood. They had to special order it for me so I'm stuck with it. Not the worst thing to get stuck with. Plus I need something to make videos about this winter ;)
Mads -- The slats look great!! I'm considering a similar project on my boat (a 1992 Island Packet 29) and am wrestling with a problem that you mentioned earlier in this series. Specifically, I'm unsure if the slats should be level or parallel with the deck. My deck rises at a slight angle as you move forward in the v-berth. While I would like to have them parallel with the deck, I have two shelves that run the length of my v-berth on either side. These are level, so parallel slats would be at an angle to the shelves, which would look odd. On the other hand, level slats would mean shorter and shorter segments forward as you go up the side of the hull, also not ideal. Any suggestions?
Sailor Doug That is a good question! For me it was a very difficult decision. In the end, I listened to my friend Doug (with the westsail 42 in one of my videos). I thin I would still line up the shelves with the deck even if I had shelves. Do you have a picture? I'd love to take a look :)
I'll do better than that: I'll send you a brief video this weekend! ;-) For now, I'm contemplating removing the shelves altogether so that I can align the slats with the deck, the same way you've done in Obelix.
Mads, this is starting to look really good and your videos are extremely helpfull. Im going through considerations if i refit the Vberth area with foambacked vinyl or if i do what you do. i was wondering if you could share with me where you bought the mahogany from? (im danish, so it might make sense)
Niels Jakob Reinhold Bjørkøe Thank you so much :) The most affordable place I found to purchase mahogany was XL-byg (in Thorsø). The price for the 9 mm thick slats with two rounded edges I'm using ended up being around 38 kr per meter. You might be able to find a better price :) If you do let me know :)
Scrape off the face layer off the old plywood that is peeling (and maybe a bit more if you want to keep the thickness the same). Sand it smooth. Glue new pieces of mahogany on. A light fiberglass would make it less likely to dent and scratch. Maybe get creative with boat name or such for decoration. Lots of coats of varnish.
Thin layer of fiberglass would be really good, since you'll be practically "cold molding" the whole bit. As a matter of fact, you can use fiberglass in between as to "sandwich" the whole piece and reinforcing it's structure further more.
Looks Great Mads ! Nice to watch a master craftsman at work ;) I'm sure the mahogany slats will add a lot of value to the boat, both in terms of enjoyment & resell value should you upgrade, looking forward to the conclusion :) Felix
Railway World Thank you so much, Felix :) I don't think I'll make back the money I've spend on any of the upgrades but I'll be more comfortable aboard :) Besides, it's good to practise before I do all of this "for real" aboard my next boat ;)
Have you noticed any improvements since you've put in the insulation? I'm in the process of refitting my boat to live aboard, and might be taking this project on.
***** It's a Harstad 31 sailboat. You can check out my videos on my site, I've been trying to document the work I'm doing, and I have a Facebook group page called "Going Looping" that describes what my wife and I are doing. Btw the V berth looks really nice.
***** Well thank you! Btw, from someone who went to school for video/audio.. I really like your video's and think you do a great job shooting and editing. Also you always talk to people so that's very nice as well, and you label you videos so they are easy to go in order. Good overall job sir :) Of course your boat is awesome too that's why I watch, but the quality was just worth mentioning!
Hi Mads , first nice haircut ,but isn't your beard getting hot ? . Ok Mads I think that the extra would is best saved for when something comes up that you know you need ; I know that when you finish your projects something will catch your attention for the would
Moe Jaime Haha ;) Thank Moe. I Denmark we have a word for people without beards ... women ;) The beard isn't all that hot and even if it was winter is coming ;) I'm sure I'll find something useful to do with all that mahogany. In my eyes, it's a "first world problem" (not a problem you'll encounter in a third world country) . I've got too much awesomely beautiful wood. Oh god, what to do ;)
Moe Jaime I know :) It's a common question and I can certainly see how it looks warm but it's honestly not something I notice. I suspect the lack of hair on the top of my head cools me down more than the beard heats me up ;)
That's looking great, can't wait to see the v-berth when you're finished.
The wood slats look wonderful, can't wait to see the finished project.

You could make a mahogany deck box.... or a cutting-board/sink cover.

Wake for Me Awesome, Paul :) Thanks! Sounds like I shouldn't expect any issues with condensation :)
Thats a great book. I hope he keeps writing.
Looking good, thanks for sharing. We have a pig for our 4 yorkies but they are scared of it, funny critters.
RaginCajunsail Thanks :) Jökull is afraid of shopping bags. I have no idea why :)

Love the squeaky piglet toy!

Make some mahogany Jenga sets (with Sail Life logos stamped or wood-burned in) for your favorite viewers and the one who made the suggestion!
pgreenx Haha :) Jenga is awesome! :) Might not be the most boat friendly game ever ;)
keep it up mads and you will haved a c&c lol looks great!
outrageousone1 Haha, thanks ;)

The best way to mask holes in wood is to mix sawdust from that wood with a little bit of wood glue or epoxy.

Use the mahogany to re-face the companionway hatch. It looks like it could use some loving :)
David Kirtley I agree, that would be great!
David Kirtley I've never "re-faced" anything before. Any tips? :) Very interesting idea! Thanks! :)

Awesome job as always Mads. Btw anything new on the home sale?
Mark Ogden Thanks! It doesn't seem like the deal is going to go through :( I hope to have an update next weekend :)
Indeed, Mads. The Martian was a fantastic book. The movie was mostly alright, too. :)
Nice work dude.
jvo0311 Thanks :)

What does your Chiropractor say about your radiating left leg / low back pain?
Mahogany would make some nice looking curtain rails?
reagentism Very interesting idea! Thanks :)
Some of the left over mahog might do a good job of helping to conceal your new curtain hardware. Just a thought.
Hey, you could make some shelving or reface the hatch.
McClellan177 Very interesting idea! Thanks :)

Use the spare mahogany as trim for your curtains.
hmm,,,you have a closed transom Mads- that timber would make a great Marlin Board :)
Hay Mads,
Is that great big orange pencil some kind of a Danish carpenters tool? Almost loks like a baseball bat.
John H.
S/V Soulmate
John H. Indeed it is John :) It's a carpenter's pencil. Fair winds :)
Bravo !!!!
So... Mads... does yokel speak english or danish... is he/she bi-barkle?
When I'm ready can you come over and do my math?
