Vahagn's Birth - Ancient Armenian Song

  • Vocals and arrangement by Farya Faraji, many thanks to Anet Gharibian for providing the pronunciation. The melody isn't mine, they're melodic motifs native to the region of the Armenian Highlands and often found in many folk songs of the region. Vahagn was an ancient Armenian deity associated with fire, war and thunder in the native Armenian polytheistic faith. He is often called Վիշապաքաղ (Vishabakagh), which means Dragon-Slayer. Vahagn has an Indo-Iranian equivalent called Verethragna.
The lyrics are in Classical Armenian or Old Armenian, the oldest attested form of the language which begins in the 5th century A.D. They are some of the only remnants of pre-Christian Armenian language and religious belief, preserved thanks to the efforts of Movses Khorenatsi, an Armenian historian from Late Antiquity. Khorenatsi is regarded as the father of Armenian history and the Armenian equivalent to Herodotus, and he claimed to be a disciple of Mesrop Mashtots, the creator of the Armenian alphabet. This song was collected by Movses Khorenatsi in his book "History of the Armenians," but the paganistic nature of it must date it to at least a century before his own time-this song is a window into the forgotten world of pre-Christian Armenia. I consulted this academic lecture when researching the subject: av.tib.eu/medi... as well as this site: hayeren.hayast...
I used the pronunciation of Iranian Armenians, therefore my pronunciation might not reflect all the diverse accents of the Armenian diaspora of today. The music is typical of that of Armenia: it uses a duduk and a large frame drum, both being ancient instruments that stretch back to Late Antiquity, with the duduk being accepted as being at least the fifth century, which places it exactly at Movses Khorenatsi's time-which makes it possible that this piece would have been recognisable to some degree to him. Some Armenian scholars claim the existence of the duduk can be traced back to far before before the fith century, but mainstream academia has not conclusively confirmed those claims. As is typical of Armenian music, two duduks are used: one provides the base drone and the other plays the melody.
    Lyrics in Classical Armenian:
    Lyrics transliterated:
    Yerkner yerkin, yerkner yerkir,
    Yerkner yev tsovn tsirani.
Yerkn i tsovun uner yev zkarmrikn yeghegnik.
    Ynd yeghegan p’vogh tsukh yelaner,
    Ynd yeghegan p’vogh bots’ yelaner,
Yev i bots’voyn vazer kharteash patanekik.
    Na hur her uner,
    Bots’ uner morus,
    Yev ach’k’unk’n ein aregakunk’.
    English translation:
    Heaven was in travail,
    Earth was in travail,
Even the Red Sea was in travail,
The birth pain also held the red reed in the sea,
Out of the reed came smoke,
Out of the reed came a flame,
And out of the flame jumped a little blonde-haired boy,
    He had fire for hair,
Flame he had for a beard,
And his little eyes were suns

According to the legendary musician Norayr Kardashyan, the melody of an old folk song Goghtan Mankti, from the region of Syunik, is actually the pagan melody that was the Birth of Vahagni. His rendition of the song Goghtan Mankti purposely emits the lyrics for this purpose.

Such a shame that almost the entire history of pre-Christian Armenia isn’t available to us because it was wiped out (purged) during Armenia’s christianization.

Armenia has such a rich culture and history that's its criminally under-neglected in Western history.
    It's like:
    Stereotypical Persians in 300
    Evil Persian Empire (total BS)
Parthian Empire did a famous victory over Romans
    Then Armenia?
Armenia be like vassal state of two superpowers and I'm like wait nooo....Armenia was a powerful Kingdom and they did challenge Rome, and their cataphracts were LEGENDARY
I mean Armenia is almost like the gateway to the East/West.

Thanks so much, dear Faroji, the Great. What a good day, great morning, that fortunately I entered in your treasure of music (-:). Bravo! I wonder if you've also traced back historically and have the songs of the old Iranians (eastern and western alike), particularly if any poetry or song we can find during the time of Zoroastrian, the great and in the later phases focused on Kurush-e Buzurg (cyrus the Great) through the Sosonids, Ishkonid, Somonids and so on and coming down to the recent past in Islamic era. Being a poor student of anthropology, I could observe how the languages and music have great unity in many terms. No language and no music could be termed pure at any cost as normally lots of our human fellows think. We could evidence enormous level of cultural difusion or otherwise and the like. Your knowledge of the music retrospectively (in historical context) are so touching as a musicologist, I think, though I listened couples of your music pieces so far. Hope you'd continue with further zeal and zest in the field. Lutfan, agar mumkin mibosheh, wakht doshtid, maro posukh dahid. Kheli mamun miboshim. I'm also curious to know if you've sung one of the ghazals of Rudaki the Great: Buy-e juy-e muliyon oyad hami, yod-e yor-e mehrbon oyad hami? Looking forward to hearing from you. Salomat boshid
