Rory was Irish. He played a Coral Electric Sitar in this song which is about Kim Philby, a notorious WWII through Cold War era double agent. In parts, Rory draws clever lyrical parallels between his life on the road and the life of a spy. Rory was very interested in spy & detective novels & films (especially fond of Dashiell Hammett's work) and he taps into these genres in a few of his songs.

As @1Moonchild said, Rory played an electric sitar for Phiby to give the song a hint of exotic faraway places. When he played this live, the chorus of "Yeah, Yeah, Yeah" became an amazing audience singalong. So much fun! You need to check out more of Rory's stuff.

The live version of this song on Rory's Live From Montreux is absolutely fantastic. A sitar like you have never heard before.

Brian May from Queen has a really good interview he did about Rory Gallagher. He waited for him after one of his shows and then asked Rory how he got his sound. He said he was so nice and told him exactly what he used. Brian said he ran out and got the equipment from a second hand store. He credits Rory for giving him his signature sound that he still uses today.

I think that odd 'guitar' sound was a sitar.

Eric Clapton called Rory one of the best guitar players ever. There are tons of masterful electric guitar players but Rory also excelled on acoustic. Few could touch his skill on one as he used a pick while also picking freely with his two free fingers. Sadly gone too early.
