Diamond Dogs is my favourite album released by anyone, ever. I think, musically speaking, it is one of the most diverse albums ever to be released. You have Stones rock (Diamond Dogs), Glam Rock (Rebel Rebel), Gothic ingluences (We Are The Dead), Shaft style soul (1984), a heart felt ballad (Rock n Roll With Me) and the Sweet Thing (medley) which I can only describe as the greatest piece ever put to tape. I do like that you rate Big Brother / Chant so highly and I'm delighted you have noticed that he seemed to give a teaser on each album on what was to come next, the most obvious being Queen Bitch on Hunky Dory.
A fine and very enjoyable review, Ross but of course I would have rated it much higher. All the best, Richard

Could do maybe do a Bowie ranking of the albums you've heard so far?

Great video Ross, personally I think this is a solid record... But I do vastly prefer the late 70's Berlin era work along with station to station. Still a brilliant record and a great review. Would love to see a video on "Closer" by Joy Division.

Again a very good Bowie album.
Man, ...... did this man made so many good albums in the seventies and then Scary Monsters. What an openibg in the eighties.

I like this album very much. It's hard to rank Bowie albums, since most are very distinct and different. This one always felt like a transitional album to me. I'm surprised to hear that "Rebel Rebel" did so poorly as a single in America, because our local radio stations in Cleveland were playing that song non-stop. Back then, radio stations were more locally controlled than they are today, and what might have been a "hit" in one region of the USA could very well have been ignored in other regions nationally. As for the album cover, the half man-half dog painting of Bowie had the dog's genitalia airbrushed out, but a few copies of the album cover went out uncensored and those 1974 uncensored versions fetch big bucks as a collectible. I'm pretty sire that recent reissues have reverted to the uncensored portrait since society is no longer so uptight about those kind of things, but if you ever find that in a 1974 original issue - GRAB IT!

It's a good shine when the worst song on the album is Rebel rebel.
