  • See what Red Sea has been up to! Today, Thomas is showing off Red Sea’s new ReefCan auto top off reservoirs. $70 for a plastic jug is still a lot.

      Agree, it's a great solution but it's still a glorified milk jug. If it was maybe $40-50 that would be a very attractive price. Sadly it doesn't fit in my WB20 cabinet or I'd likely buy one anyway as there isn't anything else as practical or comparable.

      It is, but I’ve purchased plastic fuel cans that are 1/4 the size and costing $25-$30. Also, it’s not a glorified milk jug. Much thicker and is uses HDPE. Not thin milk jug plastic. It will not cave in like a milk jug.

      I still use the 7gal blue containers by Reliance. Costs about $15. Not thin plastic. I can see the benefit of a tall narrow reservoir but I'm ok with cube shape that's also FDA approved and bpa free.

      The cost of all this is why my tank is now fresh water

    That’s wild pricing and I’ve used this with 5 gallon RO jugs from my LFS for like $10. Now I have a basement so have a 35 gallon drum with ATO. 35 gallon drum still only cost me $20 and I have it connected directly to my RO system to autofill it

    Very expensive for a plastic jerry can.
    20l plastic jerry cans are circa £30 on Amazon

      If a 5 gal pail fits then even a jerry can is too expensive!

    • @landscapingspecialist
      @landscapingspecialist Месяц назад

      Yes. 5 gal bucket will work. I considered this. But good luck fitting a 5gal can where this ATO res will fit. That’s the reason it’s expensive. A lot goes into making these. And if they can’t make money on it, then we never get it. It’s that simple.

    I have the Red Sea Reefer 170 and have the Reef Can 40 and fits perfectly in the sump. Its top quality and yes it might be pricey but its worth it because Its out of sight.....No more filling the the stock ATO every 2 days, now I fill it every 9 days. I use the Tunze Nano and works great with it. I Refill the Reef Can using a small aquarium pump. Its a great design and is hard to find a stock ATO that fits under the RSR 170.

    Would love to own one of these to save space. I bet if RedSea removed their $20 tacked on fee of “because it’s RedSea” and charged $40-50 (still high) they’d sell way more.

    but how do you fill them without removing them?

    • @NaturalAquaria

      Funnel or tube with a pump in your RODI bin.

    • @landscapingspecialist
      @landscapingspecialist Месяц назад +2

      @@NaturalAquariathat’s what I do. Use a sicce nano pump and piece of 3/8” silicone tubing to transfer from RODI storage tank to the ATO tank. And having handles makes it very easy to carry and fill. Unlike its plexiglass counterparts. I recommend it highly.

    It could be the most expensive. When I can just get a five gallon bucket for five bucks. I like Red Sea but come on.

    • @ThomasBReef
      @ThomasBReef Месяц назад

      If a bucket fits and you're happy to do a bit of DIY for the lid, than absolutely use one! This is one of the least expensive "purpose-built" ATO reservoirs, not the cheapest possible option.

    There really is no justification, at all, for a company to charge this kind of money for a plastic drum. We're all struggling to make ends meet, and enjoy a hobby we love, and we stretch to afford some of the nicer pieces of tech where we can. But when a company has an opportunity to be realistic about the cost of something, but decide to charge four or five times what it's actually worth, it just shows where the priorities are. As much as I'd love to add one to my setup, no level of practicality or coolness can support this pricing structure.
