@@Jack_Woodsas someone that watches anime it just still looks like pixar and the crazy thing is their is digitally drawn anime it's just not cgi but even then there are cgi anime that look good

They struggled with anime and turning red- they struggled with turning red because it was heavily based off of anime, which they were inexperienced in.They didn't struggle with anime bc of turning red, tho. /nm
It's interesting that Turning Red was intentionally stylized as anime. Although that is not the work of the "animators". Those decisions start from the very beggining. A sweat drop must be in the storyboard, and probably animated by a VFX artist. A production is much more complex than saying that everything is "animated" by "animators", there's a lot more depth.
I remember someone once saying the anime style was heavily discouraged at CalArts and the western animation industry for a really long time (it might’ve been Brian Lemay or Tony White), with the exception of Studio Ghibli. I guess it didn’t work out too well for them in the long run 😅
I don't think discouraging an anime style is really a bad thing, when studying art alot of people want to job to skip stylized work before they understand how to work from life. Working from life is important cause a style is an exaggerated variation of something that occurs in life. When art teachers discourage using a type of style it's not really out of hatred for the style but it's a different way of doing things that cuts corners of certain fundamentals. Learning a broad set of fundamentals equips artist with the ability to learn any style where as simply focusing on anime would probably limit an artist later on.
@@user-rq5wk2jv1d Yeah, I agree with that statement, but you don't hear that teachers and masters decry cartoonization like old newspaper strips or something akin to Jack Davis style. If you discourage one you have to do the same with the other.
That definitely made sense for before Akira in 1988 as anime was mostly non existent in the west before that point except for a couple of really popular anime shows like Astro Boy. It might of also been because of how adult anime was just as big in Japan as what it is now and was extremely frowned upon in the west as at the time animation in the west was perceived by the general population as a medium specifically for kids and family friendly content.

Idk, a few years ago (2017-ish), I remember Disney being the big thing for most animation students and the divide between anime watchers and them being very defined, disney peps either looking down on anime or avoiding it all together... Now the trend seems to have changed, I have seen the newer generation of animation students being more into anime (and open to more styles) with the ones that reject it becoming more of a minority, I would credit the fact that it has become not only more accessible and easier to consume thanks to streaming platforms, its has become more normalised due to globalization, which certainly played a role.
Curious. I dunno if it's because México loves anime, but all my friends who studied for animation always practiced both western and Japanese ever since they were little kids, and I always thought all animators did this. Kinda like meeting a mechanic that didn't touch a car growing up.
If Disney wants to make anime inspired 3d animation, they should hire Marza animation for that and have Pixar do the western based animation. The opening of Sonic Unleashed says it all.
Technical Artist here, any project in a professional capacity will require a mood board, style frame and style guide. Turning Red having one is nothing special.
