Good evening Peter, That was a fantastic repair with Encoder . The time and effort you put into these projects outstanding. I will tell you one thing your English speaking is getting a lot better. Look at some of your old videos you speaking a lot clearer now. I'm very happy with your repairs on these old Radios. 73 God Bless you and your family.
+Dennis Peake Hi Dennis, thanks for that kind feed-back. I still try to improve it as I sttill think it should be better...73 AND God bless you and your family!
Peter, what an amazing job! I love your videos. It's nice to watch an experienced, professional technician at work! I would love information on how to do this repair on my 735.
Nice work for an experimental project, but there was much easier to do: we know that the light output of LEDs (and infrared too!) decreases drastically over time while their intensity consumed is always the same : it was enough to replace the two infra-red LEDs, which are extremely easy to find at a ridiculous price. Peter, you've made it harder to worry about damaging the encoder disc, for years I have handled much more fragile ones (sheets of metal 0.05mm thick, perforated with laser!), and we repaired them without problem, it is less fragile than it seems, on the other hand the discs can be "polluted" if they are exposed to fumes (cigarettes or other!), and they must therefore sometimes be cleaned. .... I am lucky enough to have repaired machines incorporating this kind of encoder for more than 20 years .....
Awesome reply! I just purchased a ic 735 my dial has a lot of resistance to turn and jumps up and down also. What do you think I should do to address it?
great video, amazing work with very clear explanation. Based on your explanation, then I can replaced the encoder of my old rig Trio TS780. I got the idea from your explanation on how to capture quadrature signal on oscilloscope, and then added a Schmidt trigger IC to obtain the clean quadrature signal. Encoder is a cheap Chinese made encoder I bought online. I think now I can also repair the Trio Kenwood encoders with same technology as TS780 encoder. Thank you, great amazing video. 73 de YC1FYH Adhi from Indonesia.
Hello, Peter, Congratulations for this beautiful and detailed video. I have an ICOM 735-F that has the same problem. Could you send me the drawings of your assembly? Merry Christmas and happy new year.
TRXBench Well that is very modest of you but to do this kind of work to someone else's property is, to me at least, a very nerve racking proposition. I know a few Hams and their attachment to their radios can be very strong. I admire your nerve Karl.
A very nice repair and great to see a radio like this put back into a serviceable condition. I wonder how many of this type of radio, with this fault, end up thrown out into the dumpster, or broken up for parts?
Hello , can you please provide information regarding the encoder manufacturer and the schematic that you developed? Congratulations with your repair of an old great transceiver. Rob
I had a similar problem with an IC-735 that I bought on eBay. It looked brand new, and was probably not properly tested before it left the factory. The solution was to re-align one of the LEDs within the dial. Used my scope, tweaked the alignment and then it worked perfectly. Joe - K3JLS
Anybody know what it is guys are changing to get the green display to be the amber color like the slightly newer than the 735 ICOMS all had? 725,726,737 HF rigs and many others
I have two 735 that was in storage for a long time. Problem is, it just turns on and has no recieve and the dusplay is gone but still has transmit. Both worked perfectly before it got stored. Is it still worth it to have it repaired? Some say just to have all the capacitors replaced and it will operate again normally.
Have you looked into the little jumper on the back of the rig? Remember if that RCA to RCA jumper is not in place you will have NO receive. Also if the jumper is there, give it a little jiggle or maybe even go ahead and take the rig apart and check because the RCA connector that jumper connects to is on the main board and doesnt have any strain relief! So something bumping against that little jumper can break the trace, I have repaired at least one with that problem. Quick repair to the trace and the rig was in normal operation again. Good luck
I would love to inquire of this because I am finding that I do not have enough hours in a day for this. I have pulled mine and using a scope have proven the mechanical side of the encoder is fine. The emitters however are questionable and one of the receiver Darlington detector is bad or very insensitive. I would be interested in knowing an approximate price and time line to send this encoder off and have someone go over it and make it functional. The rest of the radio is fine with this one exception. I don't wish to be tethered to a laptop computer to control the tuning. :)
+Jeff Kline Hi Jeff, well approximate 50$ the new encoder and may be depending on the experience the person have 3-5 hours altogether... Hope that helps..73
Any chance you can provide a diagram of the circuit you put together on the bread board? With resistor and transistor values? I have two 735's that need encoder repair. One is an earlier model that has only four wires for the encoder. Is there anyway you might know what the difference between them is?
+TRXBench Hello Still a great repair, but, after watching it again I noticed that you were working from 2 schematics, one with a 4 wire encoder and one with a 6 wire encoder and the plug on radio was 6 wire. How do I wire new encoder to work with 4 wire plug on radio? Thanks Gary
Great workaround you should sell these ;) Outstanding German Engineering. I have sent you a msg with my email requesting the parts list and schematic. Thanks, Lin
Hello sir amazing to see you work and share your experience. Would it be possible for you to send me the schematics and info on this project so i can repair my now gailing encoder? Thank you very much!
Hallo Peter, wir haben hier einen IC-275 der das selbe Problem hat. Kannst Du mir evtl. zusätzliche Infos über Deine Reparatur zukommen lassen? Vor allem deine Schaltung ist interessant. Gerne per Mail an DJ0AL*Klammeraffe*DARC.DE. vy 73 de Axel
Excellent video. I too would like a diagram of the circuit and semiconductor values but I do not know if my reply made it to you. I do not know to to send my email (gmail) address to your gmail address.

Another fantastic repair Karl. You must have nerves of steel to do this stuff.
InTheNameOfJustice Ahm no, that is simply the job :-)

This is a great repair, thanks for the detailed nerves of steel instruction. I have a similar problem and woulod like the detailed list if possible.

Very informative , Thanks de AP2HA , H.A.Bugvi
I fixed my TR751 rotor buy spraying either inside and it was perfect for years until I upgraded.
Very good Tony. Thanks for watching 73
