- The ultimate workbench (for me)
My Dad - James McDonough passed away a few years ago. My brother had to pull his old shed down. This is what I have done with some of the timber from the demolition. I have used the timber from my Dad's shed to make a workbench in tribute to him. Something that will remind me of him every day as I dive into the deep end of attempting to make a career out through woodwork and design. I am nearly 40 years old and realise it is not the optimal time to start a new career. But I have never felt so compelled to do so in my life.
**Disclaimer**
I did not design this workbench. I built this workbench using the plans I purchased from Third Coast Craftsman. I have modified this bench, it does differ from the plans I purchased, but I did rely on them heavily for most of the build style. I have no affiliation with Third Coast Craftsman but believe it is only right to be transparent and give credit to him for the plans, no matter how much I modified them. You can find the plans on his website and purchase them as I have -

This hybrid bench is part French Roubo, part German Holtzapffel, and part English Nicholson.

This was a brilliant tribute to your dad and a testament your relationship. You’ve earned my subscription mate. I cannot wait to watch your other videos and see your development and success. Cheers
Thanks mate! I really appreciate the comments and look forward to seeing how I can develop also.
Well done - love the bench - great tribute to your dad sir!
Thank you. I enjoyed making this one :)
Sorry for your loss. That's an awesome table.
I appreciate that Jason. My Dad was a great man and taught me most of what I know. I'm glad you liked the bench build 👍🏻
your father would be very proud of your tribute. Your decision to begin your new journey will be enhanced by the tribute. Good Luck It is a Stunning piece
Thanks a lot Garry. I do like how I get immediately reminded of Dad every time I use it :)
Wow! what a wonderful hand tool workbench. Now, put it in the living room and build another workbench that you can actually use. Damaging it would be heart breaking.
Haha, if only I had the room ... 😄
Dad is diggin'' it, is what i thik.
I can tell you put your heart into this build. That is one beautiful bench, that can do any kind of woodworking project you throw at it. This is my 2nd time seeing this video, and probably want be my last. I lost my father back several years ago. He thought me a hell of a lot about things you do in life. I miss him a lot. Great build my friend!!!!!!!
Thanks mate. Yeah it was a special one for me for sure. I appreciate your kind words and I am also sorry for your loss. Take care mate. Brenden.
Absolutely beautiful branch amazing work . Your dad would love it and be so proud 🙏🏻

Awesome work bro
Very nice work. I love that you repurposed your Dad’s shed to make this bench. Outstanding!
Thanks Sean. Yep I am also very happy I was able to use the material from Dad's shed to make something I will use every day. Cheers.
I've had this in my watch later playlist for ages now. So glad I finally took the time to watch it! Really enjoyed seeing you put this beautiful desk together, what a great tribute to your old man. I'm excited to follow your journey this year, best of luck!
Cheers brother, much appreciated and right back at you. Always look forward to seeing your art pop up on my timeline 🤙
Beautiful!

That bench is gorgeous! Great job. The tribute to your father was a awesome touch. Good luck with your new endeavor.
Thank you Jason 🙂
Juste magnifique, félicitations et merci pour le partage ! Salutations de Suisse
Great video, and this work bench is awesome. The use of the card scrapper for the epoxy, your glue up precisions all top notch. The video editing was pretty good too, hope it’s going well. New Subscriber here, and about to binge your videos when i have some more time. Keep up the good work.
Much appreciated my man 🙏🏼
Beautiful bench !! Good luck with your new venture . I hope to see a lot of content , and wish you the best of success . I'm glad to be one of your early subscribers.
Thank you Carl. Much appreciated 👍🏻
@@mcdonoughdesign Your welcome
Beautiful bench and touching tribute. I'm subscribed and support you on your journey as a content creator. Excited to see where this channel goes.
Thanks Cody, as am I :)
Good luck!
Awesome, gave me some much needed inspiration, on trash days I like cruise through neighborhoods that have me custom or well taken care of homes, from working class homes to nicer ones. I tend to always find a good amount of hardwood furniture that can have good sized and quality wood I can use for my projects, way cheaper than buying it. On a side note, I just realized that if you have a bench build video I will subscribe to your channel. Very nice result to your build
Thanks Allen
Subscribed and looking forward to your content and watching your channel grow. Cheers from Central Coast.
Thank you The Mo Star!
Brilliant Mate. Got my sub.
Thanks heaps 👍🏻
That table looks amazing!!! Never knew you could use black super glue like that!!
Beautiful workbench! I wasn’t going to let you be at 99 subscribers so I made it a hundred for you. Good luck on your new journey!
Thank you. Was a great surprise to see 100 subscribers today. Much appreciated.
nice bench!
Thank you
Good luck man - the workbench looks gorgeous, and looking forward to seeing more from you
One piece of advise - look up focusing on youtube, because you seem to have some issues there :)
Other than that, hope you do great
Thanks, Ivan. Yes, I agree. I have a lot to learn. I only have my phone to use for recording at the moment so it isn't ideal but I aim to keep learning and improving the quality of both pre and post-production over time. I am having a lot of low light issues as well which also has its challenges.
Regardless of where or how you got the plans the work bench is awesome. I have used third coast craftsman plans for some projects myself. In particular his farm table, which I modified to fit my criteria.
Thanks, John. He has some great plans. I will have to check out the farm table.
Hope you are successful with your RUclips channel enjoyed your build
Thanks Gary! I appreciate your support 👍🏻
Nice.
Thanks!
I can finally say “I knew him before he was famous”
Haha, I am not sure about that but I appreciate the sentiment Saliya. Cheers.
Might wanna figure out the autofocus thing if this is to be your new gig.
Camera phone is all I had at the time mate and in poor lighting it was the best I could do with the resources I had.
👍👍👍
Nice to see another Aussie on RUclips doing woodworking. What model mitre saw do you have and how do you like it?
I'll get the exact model for you. I can't recall off the top of my head. But I think it's the Makita 300mm compound mitre. I really like it, especially the front mounted slide rails. You can save heaps of room as the rails don't extend out to the rear like other models and brands. The rear mounted rails take up heaps more room and I've seen others have to cut massive cavity spaces behind their saws to fit them in. Mine is sitting and slightly overhanging on a 600mm deep bench. I like it 👌🏼
Lovely stuff mate. Perfect use for the timber and a great way to kick off the new undertaking. How's it all faring 7 months on?
Thanks mate. Yep love that bench too. 7 months later though and it's looking more likely I'll be packing shelves by the end of the year unfortunately.
@@mcdonoughdesign it's a tough gig going out alone, brave to try but no harm deciding the experiment has run its course. Im sure Timbecon would let you pack shelves a few days a week ;)
@FixitFingers Yep. Made a million mistakes. Put too many eggs in one basket with my Etsy store and had that rug pulled out from under me. Then a few expensive marketing mistakes to boot. Not giving up just yet. See how the next few months go with the furniture I make in the factory I've just leased.
@@mcdonoughdesign best of luck. It's a tough gig but if you can pay the bills and be happy, #winning
Nice job! Is the twin vise any use? I've the same end vice as you, and I don't love it, it racks easy and is fairly slow. Love the build 👍
Hi John. Yep, the end vise is worth every penny. Especially over hanging larger and awkward shaped jobs where you just need to pinch an end of something on the corner of the vise. Doesn't rack at all and holds everything nice and tight.
@@mcdonoughdesign thanks for the recommendation!
No problem. They are quite expensive to buy in Australia but I think weighing up the frustration of working with a racked vise or one that keeps slipping - in the end it will pay for itself with efficiency and reliability.
👍
Thanks for the heads up and for bringing the comment issue to my attention. I am learning as fast as possible how to do these videos properly. It appears to have been the "Made for kids" option that was restricting the comments. I will keep this in mind for future videos. Thanks again! Cheers.
That’s too nice to be used as a workbench, keep it as a display piece for your new businesses.
I would really love to John. But as my workshop is so small, I have nowhere to display it. I think my old man would have preferred me to use it also. It would be nice to keep pristine though...
What type of lumber is that
Hi Eric. Embarrassingly, I am not 100% positive as it was pulled down from a very old shed and my identification skills are not the greatest. My guess, however, is that it is a mixture of Red Iron Bark, Spotted or Flooded Gum, Tasmanian Oak, and Blackbutt.
@@mcdonoughdesign yeah, I’ve never heard or seen any of that here in the states.
It's definitely just a range of Australian Hardwoods that were used in construction back in the 60s and 70s. Some of the beams were 12m in length with no joins. Crazy how they used to make things back in the day.
Almost too nice to use. Enjoy the bench!
Absolutely Scott. But every day I use it I instantly think of my old man and it's the perfect reminder and motivator I need to keep working on my craft and start enjoying what I do for a living, just like he did 👍🏻
机器人可以取代大部分工作
THE CAMERA IS TOO FAST
Sorry mate that music ruined the vid even though it's a good looking workbench better luck next time
I think most devices these days come with a mute button. Maybe try that next time 😆 Thanks for the valuable comment, champ.
The main thing here is if you think that this workbench is the ULTIMATE then that is great I do not see the being close to being the ULTIMATE compared to many others that have built brilliant workbenches.
