The removal of all those rigid rules was invigorating, but also felt pretty strange after 9 years. The weirdest thing for me when I got out was going to a barber and being asked what kind of haircut I wanted. Having a choice in the matter was not something I had actually prepared myself for... I didn't even know the names of any hairstyles, much less have an opinion on the one I wanted. They made me get out of the chair and look through some books.

The Marine Corp forced my dad to retire. He was a Master Sargent and had been in for 27 years. He wanted 30. He LOVED what he did. But they REFUSED to move him up in rank. Apparently(to my understanding), if you don't ''make enough progress/rank up" in a certain timeframe, they force you to retire. They passed over my dad for positions because they wanted to keep him in a position to train the people THEY wanted, and kept him there. Against his will, they never let him move up, and eventually threw the, "Well, YOU didn't move up in time. YOU have to retire now"
Good on you for doing what felt right, and not letting them drive you into the ground of resentment.

best wishes to you eric. my wife, and daughters (9 and 7) and I have enjoyed your videos over the years. We have seen you play at the Lincoln Memorial, and at Iwo Jima. my kids got really excited when they could see you playing on the field. My oldest (9) is following in my footsteps playing the trumpet, (i know not as cool as the drums), but hey, we can't all be awesome as a drummer is, some of us have to play melodies too lol. My dad retired from the Marine Corps in 79, and although he is passed on, I think he would have agreed with your decision to move on. Like you said, you have gained a lot of notariaty and the exposure on youtube and being in the Commandant's own has helped you in that endeavour. We will continue following you and wish you the best! Oohrah! and Semper Pullus!

I’ve always enjoyed your vids. They are entertaining as well as instructional. I particularly liked the one on tuning bass drums-very helpful. Thank you for your service and best of luck in your transition to civilian life.

Man I've been a huge fan of yours since I got the pleasure of seeing you perform at PASIC back in '09 or '10. You are in my top 3 favorite tenor players of all time. (Tim Jackson and Matt Penland, in no particular order). Congratulations and thank you for your service!

Just in time for the start of DCI 2022. Any Drum Corp would benefit from you as a tech/arranger. Crown would be a good place! 😀

Hey EMC, I've been watching your vids for a couple years now since I was a drum captain in high school; I've graduated, I'm in college now, and while I don't play drums anymore I still love your videos! I think this change will be positive and I hope you enjoy your life as a social media influencer. I look forward to seeing many more videos from you!

I am sure this is disappointing and you are probably a little worried but I think there is a silver lining. You might have maxed what you could achieve on RUclips while being in the marine corps. Now you can choose teaching and performance opportunities that will give you more time to devote to you channel.

Hey man, I'm no drummer but I AM an avid fan of the marching arts. I have a deep respect for what you do, inspiring other marching fans with your SICK CHOPS and fantastic sense of humor. I'm super hype to see what you do next, man!

How is using facilities that you're entitled to use as a member, on your own time, while not only reaching a big audience but also attracting more people to join the USMC A WASTE OF GOVERNMENT RESOURCES?! I'm glad you got away from that so there's nothing to hold you back and I cant wait to see where you go from here.

Seeing you in that home studio, I think we all need a way to pay you for gigs, but not something like Fivverr because they'll steal your money.

I was wondering when the USMC was going to crack down on you. That shit sucks and shows how out of touch the military continues to be. Instead of engaging with you and possibly collaborating with you, since you are a fairly popular RUclipsr, they say, 'remove these videos or gtfo.'
    Well...bye.

I am an RN working in a big hospital system, so I do understand perfectly how the upper administration in an archaic institution has a reflex to kill anything new that it can't be bothered to try to comprehend. You are among the first but you won't be the last Marine to use social media. For the Marines to not embrace the potential of new technology and encourage creative people to harness it for promoting their brand shows how leadership that can't adapt to changing times will ultimately run their organization into the ground. You are a goodwill ambassador for the USMC and have reflected the only the best aspects of life in the military. They are a bunch freakin' idiots to drive away smart, positive and innovative individuals such as yourself. Being a pioneer is a thankless job. Eric- I'm so sorry you are a concept that Marine leadership can't yet wrap its mind around.
