This scene actually gives a lot of context to the ending. Why would Ted be talking about Robin as "the woman of his dreams" yet not referring to the mother in that same way?

Yeah, most likely because they filmed the kids reaction right on the beginning so they knew how the series is going to end right from the start. For those that don't understand what I am talking about his kids show up occasionally in scenes and they never get old even though IRL they are adults by the time series ends.
I watched it for many times and it never gets old. So golden.

This isn't a fucking fairy tell, do you know how weird it is if Ted said 'Well kids, I'm gonna tell you a story about the woman who his standing right outside this room, your mother' he wouldn't be telling them this story unless she was dead and it was literally just him having almost meetings with a woman he doesn't know while summing up the entire history of him and Robin
It’s a romantic trope in literature. The first girl, the one that left the deepest impression is the one that ends with the main character. Why? Because it gives a sense of full circle narrative. Some people don’t like it because they prefer more realistic renditions of life. In reality few people are this “lucky”.

Since the very beginning we've known they had to end up together, everything was just about timing for them . Maybe Tracy was perfect for him but Robin was the love of his life and turns out Ted didn't want perfect he wanted Robin. And Robin has always been in love with Ted but she didn't chose him bc she knew she couldn't give him the family with kids he wanted so bad, she chose his happiness over hers and that's true love. Again: PERFECT ENDING!! ❤️
