I dont think he was involved. And I love how it did what I thought was impossible which was bring back the OG Dragon Ball feeling of going on adventures and not fall victim to the trope of power creeping, I mean they brought back the Power Pole, I freaking missed that staff.

Them being kids is less about limiting them, and more to give the new characters a reason to underestimate Goku again, which was a big part of the motif of original Dragon Ball. For a while at least.
Loving the beard on you, Kaiser; I'm surprised you guys didn't touch on the suspicious lack of Gohan too, I've been really surprised we haven't seen him or Videl so far. Hopefully at least Gohan turns up by the end--and would be nice if Daima did in fact go for more than 20 episodes, because it's been fun having a new show to watch week to week, especially it being Toriyama's last heavy involvement in Dragon Ball and having a lot of his DNA throughout as a result too. Have also really enjoyed the lore drops, including the universes' creation and teasing Super's Kais and Shin's Glind name being Nahare, along with Namekians actually being demons and all, and the animation/direction in most of the episodes being so gorgeous makes even the weaker-pacing episodes still fun to watch. (Also, I'm one of those people that likes to strap in and sing along to the opening, and getting to "yume wa TORIdori naYAMAnai AKIRAmenai" is like a toast to Toriyama every time.)
i feel the reason he's out is because they don't know or care of what to do with him and i honestly respect that. if what we'd get out of gohan would be more of the same and not really highlight what makes him work as a character, i respect just keeping him out of it and slimming down the cast a bit. we don't need EVERYONE here y'know? and later on, the series is alreadys truggling to juggle it's cast, gohan would just be another face for the bleachers.
Okay, so, you guys need to talk about how the sign for the join bugs showed more than two people fusing. If that's accurate, and not just a bit of creative advertising, this is the first fusion mechanism in the franchise that works on a group, and I want to see that.
Not the first time. There are two introduced in side things. God Fusion in a 3D movie (I think) where Goku fuses with the audience. And Dragon Ball Heroes: Fusions have the Ultra Fusion which combines 5 people.
It's basically there to explain why Namekians developed merging. They pointed out that Namekians got bullied by both of the other demon worlds and ultimately left cause they were tired of all that "Freeza shit", just to end up with more Freeza shit later lol. The bugs let them do it with out it being permanent, but they knew it was possible afterwards for merging. Like with Moro, for emergencies.
23:46 Something else interesting regarding the revelation of Piccolo's race being demons is the terminology used, both in the original Japanese and the translated subtitles. Because Namekians are no longer called "Namekians" (ナメック星人) but rather Nameks (ナメック人). This actually started in the Super manga when they decided to focus on their demonic roots and claim that the planet they live on was never truly theirs, but one they inhabited after coming from the demon realm instead. Since then, they stopped using ナメック星人 to refer to them in the series. Really interesting to me.
My head canon would be the difference between “earthling” and “human” You can have humans that aren’t earthlings. (IE if a human was born on mars, that would make them a human Martian) That’s how I think it works with nameks. Neva is a namek, and not a namekian, while piccolo is both a namek and a namekian. just headcanon but it might be true
There’s two celebrity deaths that have actually made me cry, Toriyama, and Kevin Conroy, this show is not everything I wanted, but it feels more Toriyama than anything that has come out in years
One of the most charming things about Toriyama and his works is that oftentimes what he wrote was rarely "everything I wanted", allowing it to be less predictable and opening myself to liking that I didn't know that I wanted. Toriyama was pretty much the troll mangaka and is one the things I loved most about him.
In recent years I’ve definitely skipped intros while watching some anime, I’ll say when I’m watching Daima I never skip the intro. It gets me very emotional realizing it was Toriyamas last work
33:07 if i remember right the wish targeted goku and his friends, not just specifically the ones who fought against buu, since the ox king was also affected, but since it's before super takes place, you're absolutely correct that 17 would not be affected by this wish
@FourStarBento, I just finished episode 10 of your commentary on your episodes playlist. Probably for the fourth time at least, and you asked who goes back and watches from episode 1 all the way through. And I have to say ever since watching it the first time I have started from episode 1 with or without commentary and gone all through the seasons at least 10 times. I try to catch up on every you guys do. Love the channels and you guys have kept me sane through a storm of decades of shite.... Thank you for every smile and outburst of laughter you bring.
I think the reason for Daima to have the characters turned into kids is because the show actually began as a spin-off series, like that one Rock Lee chibi spin off from Naruto. But They wanted to consult some things with Toriyama, and he ended up taking charge of the project, so it got rewritten but he kept the *chibi" aspect.
ye, but even then, as far as intro's go. it's still fairly bad for a 70 minute episode to take 40 mins to get to the point. they'd still need to trim some down RoF isn't good, but it's about the same length and still "got to the point" at exactly 18 mins
Toriyama went out on a bang, hitting his roots. Its for funn and for free. True fans give critic and still have love for it all. Much love kids. Yall are doing a great job.
What's funny about the retcons is that they show some stuff Toriyama ever only mentioned in interviews and random media and not in the manga, so he DID do his homework, he went and read what he wrote and purposefully changed stuff for some reason. He didn't forget this time around, this is all intentional.
Well, I would imagine one would go back and make sure they "do it right", especially if they know their health is failing and they might not be around to add anymore to their own story.
I like that they actually show Shin being smart and kicking ass. It's a bit of redemption from how Buu Saga made him a joke as soon as he stopped being a mystery. I'm hoping he's the fusion with Goku and not Vegeta
Dragonball Daima has been such a fun show so far, in terms of the DB sequels (GT or Super), I've enjoyed this one the most so far. Glad to see Kaiser and Lani are going into this 👍.
I liked the build up with the first few episodes. It took its time to set up the demon world, and besides from apart the first episode didnt feel terrible. it made the hype of the next few episodes so much better and feel worth the wait.
@@TheBlueArmageddon I think he was speaking about his attitude...and I totally agree with that actually! Toriyama really gave this impression of a nonchalant personality about himself ^^'
55:00 Agreed. Somewhere between End of Cell and End of Z, Goku crystalized. There's nowhere for him to go except a higher power level. Nothing to really develop personality wise. He's a static character reacting to things, not growing or developing.
I think the reason why they arent called "Kids" in promotional stuff is because....they aren't in a sense. They are kids yes but they are just kid versions of their current selves, they are just tiny versions of themselves. Kid would imply they are the child they once were, it could be that because the wish was kinda vauge Shenron just shrunk them down
For every story inconsistency or contrivance (like panzi only being there to be the awed party to Goku's strength, two episodes to fix a plane just to recycle planes every other episode following), I kinda LOVE that silly plot details are being hand-waved away. Shenron granting 3 wishes as a bonus to repeat patrons is hilarious to me. Characters don't misuse the narrative-breaking Senzu and fusion products because "eew, dude, bugs!"
While the fandom rags on the Buu saga, that was the first time in years that Toriyama was able to do whatever he wanted with minimal interference. It's no wonder his last project tied so closely to it
I genuinely enjoy shenron getting some character development and interactions in the first episode. You could kind of sense he was figuring out how to mess up the wish with all the little nitpicking and questions. After episode one my thought was “ohh, wait … almost EVERYONE helped beat kid buu thanks to satan and the spirit bomb.” But when we see it’s more or less just the group that directly interacts with the different iterations of the “bad” Majin, and everyone basically kept their power, it became clear that shenron just wanted to grant the wish in the worst way possible as a joke. I’m all for the new shenron that does whatever he wants and has his own personality. (Same with super hero.)
It literally means "people of arms" (or "people of weapons"), technically, when you speak about them as individuals. As for the order, as a group, that would be like "people of armory" or "people of weaponry", actually...
Daima has been a breath of fresh air. I'm 10 episodes in. And yes, theres always gonna be power scaling fans. But I don't care as long as it has good story.
They talk about the weather outside their places being opposite but I'm over here being thrown off by their FACIAL HAIR being opposite. I've seen both their socials, but seeing them together I just realised I'm not used to Lani being clean shaven and Kaiser with a full on beard. xD
For what i heard they dont only included Toriyama's name on the opening song. After Toriyama's death, they scrapped the opening they already had finished and ready to air to make the definitive version we got. There's also more references in the opening and also the ending sequence, with the feathers and the bird, etc.
The fact that they have enough pre-recorded footage lined up for them to announce A ) A three month gap between them seeing each other and B ) That Lani has fulled on moved? is wild.
Ngl I’m absolutely loving Daima so far, I’ve seen 13 as of now, the pacing in the beginning was definitely slow but I figured it would pick up and it almost felt like it was one long movie, so I definitely understand y binging would be better but it didn’t bother me much. But it’s such a fun story. It’s funny because people say it’s the pilaf saga plus GT and I’ve only seen OG dragon ball once and hated GT but love this lol
Goku has been serving the role of the mascot for many years. Unless Toriyama had unused notes that further developed his character, or Toyotaro will find something do add in, there truly is nothing more to be done with Goku post-DBZ. If nothing else, to go on what Lani said, he may as well be the voiceless protagonist of an RPG whose only purpose is to be guided by the player while the supporting cast are the central actors of the story.
I feel like the child thing was to frezze power creep between Z and Super. Also to give it whimsy, and so everybody underestimates them. I like the (not retcons) lore dumps that explain things further that we didn't have explanations for.
One of my favorite gags in the show so far is goku not pronouncing Glorios name properly gives me huge vibes of him not pronouncing the hyberbolic time chamber in dbza
Daima has been a lot of fun to watch week to week. Visually it looks amazing and I'm glad we're still getting new Dragon Ball. I kind of wish it had the same online impact like Super did during the Future Trunks or Tournament of Power. Where we'd all have those camp fire gatherings online trying to predict and guess what might happen next.
I still think the bar demons recognizing Shin as a Glind wouldn't work as well, cause Glinds are supposed to be a people that most of these folks in the third realm wouldve never seen. Panzy only recognizes Shin as one cause she's seen Degesu. Glorio knowing Shin is a Glind right away was actually a hint, too 🤔
The good news about the whole George RR Martin thing is: he really seems to be leaning into the joke as he has very little interest, at least publicly, in actually ever finishing it. Guy got paid and walked away. I salute the hustle.
I'm far too much of a sourpuss to enjoy this right now! When Moro!? lol I'll take my time watching these when we have super anime airing again... glad you guys are enjoying it tho!
I actually like that there’s some aspects that are pointed out but don’t become plot relevant like shin pointing out the light barrier between demon worlds and just saying “someone put up a barrier”. He wasn’t there, he was a baby, he doesn’t know what happened or why. It’s just the way things are now but hints that there is an interesting story there.
The supplementary writing staff for Daima seem to have a real genuine love and respect for Dragon Ball and Toriyama and it shows in the quality of the character work.
@ Nah, I meant Toei. Some muckety-muck heard there was a scene where they get magical bugs with effects and asked/told them to go more in-depth so that it's easier to make them appear in game tie-ins later on.
@@wanderingstorytellerj7758Dragonball games have already been doing fusion stuff without the bugs? There's a literal game called dragon ball fusions where u can fuse up to 5 ppl
@@wanderingstorytellerj7758 It's 100% going to be a video game. Everything in the early episodes is just video game set up to pace the player. I'm glad I'm not the only one who noticed. Since other wise most of the itemization would be irrelevant. They introduced it early since game wise it would need to be. Anime wise it would have been smarted to introduce the bugs at or after the first Tama fight since they don't even use the first bug for several episodes and completely forget about them till then.
Honestly, I always figured that the "they're children but they're not" was 100% a written monkey's paw as a joke. Like Shenron could say "you asked for them to be turned to children, you didn't say they needed to lose their power" sort of thing. Probably just a retroactive head canon, but idc, but it fits with his whole "I only give 3 to my regulars" joke, too.
One thing that I think they messed up on with the lore drop is the Kais. I thought the explanation before was that they used the Dragon balls to separate. In this series, they say Buu helped them out.
This is only "messed up" if they don't later fuse again, which is entirely possible and I could see Boo refuse to help a second time for whatever reason he thinks up.

Them being kids is less about limiting them, and more to give the new characters a reason to underestimate Goku again, which was a big part of the motif of original Dragon Ball. For a while at least.
Yeah it really gives Goku Vegeta and piccolo moments to impress people again.
That's just terribly themed context to me.
Not good storytelling.
Insane that what we have seen with them together was filmed months in advance
I knew in the abstract, but this is just like, WOAH.
And Dragon Ball Heroes: Fusions have the Ultra Fusion which combines 5 people.
didn’t one of the dta books mention the fusion dance can be done with up to 5 people?
This could just be misremembering something completely though
@@DimkaSulegnaa i am just going to picture them all doing the dance in a way it forms a rough star shape.
that's the only way i see that working.
Namekians can fuse together in a seemingly infinite amount.
星 means planet. They are no longer people of the planent Namek but the Namek People.
@@VividAMVs The Malaysian Dub has been vindicated
My head canon would be the difference between “earthling” and “human”
You can have humans that aren’t earthlings. (IE if a human was born on mars, that would make them a human Martian)
That’s how I think it works with nameks. Neva is a namek, and not a namekian, while piccolo is both a namek and a namekian.
just headcanon but it might be true
There’s two celebrity deaths that have actually made me cry, Toriyama, and Kevin Conroy, this show is not everything I wanted, but it feels more Toriyama than anything that has come out in years
Now I want to hear Kevin Conroy voice Glorio or Piccolo or something
@ I feel like his old Bruce Wayne voice would have worked perfect for Morro if they ever animated the rest of Super
Two for me too Toriyama and Kobe.
It gets me very emotional realizing it was Toriyamas last work
“What do you think, Gorilla-o?”
“….you did that one on purpose.”
“Might’a been.”
(EDIT: Thought of a funnier misname)
😂😂😂😂😂
33:07 if i remember right the wish targeted goku and his friends, not just specifically the ones who fought against buu, since the ox king was also affected, but since it's before super takes place, you're absolutely correct that 17 would not be affected by this wish
imagine knowing Goku & not becoming a kid.
"I see how it is, Goku..."
@@XiaomuArisu that may be the intention with karin but i choose to see him as chibi-fied
Surprised they didn't bring up Shenron just changing the wish rules for a new wisher.
they did have a lot to charge through tbh
Neva did that. He pointed that out later. Crafty old Namekian he is.
I’m surprised they broke down 6 episodes into one hour
@FourStarBento, I just finished episode 10 of your commentary on your episodes playlist. Probably for the fourth time at least, and you asked who goes back and watches from episode 1 all the way through. And I have to say ever since watching it the first time I have started from episode 1 with or without commentary and gone all through the seasons at least 10 times.
I try to catch up on every you guys do. Love the channels and you guys have kept me sane through a storm of decades of shite.... Thank you for every smile and outburst of laughter you bring.
The opening and ending songs tug at the dam feels man knowing it was all redone as a tribute ❤
"On today's episode of Dragon Ball Daima: The Gang Loses a Plane"
"Do you have any idea how little that narrows it down!?"
30:02 Bulma has always been the catalyst that moves the story forward.
Not really. Just in the Pilaf and Android sagas
It was a 40 year celebration so they started with dragonball and kid goku.
"Pilaf if you gave him magic"
...so like Garlic Jr?
Oh no, not Kaiser threatening us with a video essay comparing GT and Daima! The horror!
I love that we got to see Lani doing a re-take in the middle of the conversation.
Piccolo: "Wait...I really am a demon, we're not slug people!?!" Nail: "Huh, neat."
To address Kaiser’s problems with the pacing of ep. 1, that episode was supposed to be combined with ep. 2 so it was in fact stopped halfway through
ye, but even then, as far as intro's go. it's still fairly bad for a 70 minute episode to take 40 mins to get to the point. they'd still need to trim some down
RoF isn't good, but it's about the same length and still "got to the point" at exactly 18 mins
I have been incredibly surprised and enjoyed watching Daima so far, but was even happier to see y'all hopping on for commentary!
I have been waiting for this since before Daima started. Very excited to sit down with this one.
God damn Kaiser rocking that beard
Boys are back!! Great listen while making food. Thank you.
Lani moved to LA and his hotness burst the surroundings into fire.
Toriyama went out on a bang, hitting his roots. Its for funn and for free. True fans give critic and still have love for it all. Much love kids. Yall are doing a great job.
I'm with Kaiser; I would have loved for them to have continued with Super, but if this is what they decided to do, they are doing it VERY well.
You make my week more happier
My headcanon is that Gohan was turned into a kid also, but he is so absorbed in writing this thesis paper that he doesn't notice.
I like that they actually show Shin being smart and kicking ass. It's a bit of redemption from how Buu Saga made him a joke as soon as he stopped being a mystery.
I'm hoping he's the fusion with Goku and not Vegeta
God damn Lani’s hair looks so good. Love the content guys!
Hybis seems like a Toriyama self-insert lmao
He really doesnt lol, despite what MasakoX says
@@TheBlueArmageddon Never watched Masako's review, this was my own observation to be clear.
@@NevG27Hybis doesn't smoke
@@TheBlueArmageddonI thought he said Nerva was, the old namekian. He had a whole video on it
@@TheBlueArmageddon I think he was speaking about his attitude...and I totally agree with that actually! Toriyama really gave this impression of a nonchalant personality about himself ^^'
23:33 "He knows how to reactivate inert dragon balls."
Suddenly I'm reminded of a DBZ YTP where Piccolo says "The balls are inert"
always a good day when we get a fourstarbento drop
55:00 Agreed. Somewhere between End of Cell and End of Z, Goku crystalized. There's nowhere for him to go except a higher power level. Nothing to really develop personality wise. He's a static character reacting to things, not growing or developing.
This made me go and watch the first 6 episodes of Daima. I am loving it so far!
29:38 - mini roshi looks a lot like saitama
Without his staff, he looks like Krillian, probably because we never saw him without a beard.
I think the reason why they arent called "Kids" in promotional stuff is because....they aren't in a sense. They are kids yes but they are just kid versions of their current selves, they are just tiny versions of themselves. Kid would imply they are the child they once were, it could be that because the wish was kinda vauge Shenron just shrunk them down
Love it! And the little tidbit about how humans/sayins came to be after the fact, so they‘re a wild card in existisence.
It's no wonder his last project tied so closely to it
I’ll bet you anything that toriyama decided to draw turbanless popo, and just decided he needed something on his head.
DAIMA IS ALSO COMING AS DLC IN DRAGON BALL KAKAROT
I genuinely enjoy shenron getting some character development and interactions in the first episode.
You could kind of sense he was figuring out how to mess up the wish with all the little nitpicking and questions.
After episode one my thought was “ohh, wait … almost EVERYONE helped beat kid buu thanks to satan and the spirit bomb.”
But when we see it’s more or less just the group that directly interacts with the different iterations of the “bad” Majin, and everyone basically kept their power, it became clear that shenron just wanted to grant the wish in the worst way possible as a joke.
I’m all for the new shenron that does whatever he wants and has his own personality. (Same with super hero.)
I like to imagine Shenron is a lot like Kami, while Parunga is a lot like the Grand Elder.
hybis is probably my favorite new character too.
Man, Lani's hair game is fire. I'm jealous
I only just watched episode 2. I’m enjoying it so far. Nice to hear Stephanie back
Gendarmerie is french, and as old royalty was known to speak it as an extra language, it feels appropriate for the setting.
It literally means "people of arms" (or "people of weapons"), technically, when you speak about them as individuals. As for the order, as a group, that would be like "people of armory" or "people of weaponry", actually...
@798jeremy thanks for explaining what it meant, I forgot to clarify that.
It was also a form of special military police that the SS was based on. They're meant to be an oppressive force of the government.
Daima has been a breath of fresh air. I'm 10 episodes in. And yes, theres always gonna be power scaling fans. But I don't care as long as it has good story.
I still wonder why they didnt include Gohan. Maybe him back as a kid would be too op.
I've been having a blast with Daima, very fun so far, I'm 14 episodes in, so I can't wait for whenever you guys catch up.
Finally! Some love for Clinkenbeard!
I agree that she's not perfect, but she's the best English Gohan that we've had. By far.
Agreed.
The fact that they have enough pre-recorded footage lined up for them to announce A ) A three month gap between them seeing each other and B ) That Lani has fulled on moved? is wild.
Most content creators record in advance to have a buffer.
Even the other review stuff was filmed months in advance.
There are so many books that the author dies before they could finish that I have zero problem with a story continuing after the originators death.
It's cool that you two watched this show in different ways it really is a different show week to week compared to binging ut all in one go
I feel like the child thing was to frezze power creep between Z and Super. Also to give it whimsy, and so everybody underestimates them.
I like the (not retcons) lore dumps that explain things further that we didn't have explanations for.
I just want Piccolo to at some point in time just talk about how the "True Demon King" has returned when speaking about himself.
One of my favorite gags in the show so far is goku not pronouncing Glorios name properly gives me huge vibes of him not pronouncing the hyberbolic time chamber in dbza
Vegeta acting like hes too good to eat bugs but his very first on panel appearance has him and Nappa eating giant bugs.
I think the most jarring thing about this series is gohan has not been on screen once.
10:30 Toriyama has a habit of giving Kid Goku a wife
Mob psycho 100 shows that you can absolutely use CGI in anime in a way that is purely beneficial.
"Who just broke rule 6?!" Was the first thing thag came to mind. Doubly so considering the only one reacting to the broken pillar is Popo
My head canon is that the fusion bugs are what kai ear rings are made from
My head canon is that whole scene was requested by the studio for an eventual video game. Tell me it didn't sound like the tutorial from a Daima RPG.
@@wanderingstorytellerj7758 A game studio having the right to making requests ? lmao that really can only happen in your head canon
🤣😆🤣😆 5 SECONDS IN (after ad) and you got me to spit my water laughing!!
They made them children to draw in new children
Can you order factor with food stamps?
