  • Vinyl picture disc interview with Ian Curtis, recorded on cassette in the (noisy) Castle pub, Manchester, in November 1979, i.e. after the release of Unknown Pleasures and Transmission and before Curtis's relationship with Annik Honore, the recording of Closer in April 1980 and his death on May 18th.

No one talks this long about themselves in such a comfort.able zone A whole new insight. Most people would ffnd the indulgence a little embarrassing and awkward, and deflect much of this stuff. Fascinating new take.

I have absolutely no prob' whatsoever understanding Ian's accent.. but perhaps that's cos' I only live a few miles down the road from where he was raised! That's towards Manchester than away from.. Manchester..what a fantastic city! Manchester music scene? Best in the world bar none! I am a musician who feels proud as punch to have lived here for the past 26years..RIP Ian..RIP Martin & RIP Tony..keep the faith!!

As a one time regular of this pub I would love the story that this interview, which is meant to have been given by John Peel, really took place in there. It seems to be in some dispute, though.Manchester music historian Dave Haslam insists that it is untrue.

I dunno , I still do think it sounds like Barney, cause of the real softness, but then, you can kind of hear a bit more of a slightly raw edge to it, so maybe Ian. Incidentally, have you read 'touching from a distance'? If so, what did you make of it ?

Damn, could you have just taken Ian outside, in your car or in another room somewhere at this locaiton to separate Ian from the noise if you wanted to do an interview? This would have been such an important recorded document if this could have been done. Ian is making some important points that are distorted by the surroundings. After you played it back and heard how crappy the sound was you should have tried to go and get Ian again and made a second, decent interview recording.

@tuberenvy - Why's it a shame? He got to the point where life wasn't worth living, so why should he have continued? How do you know what's good or not? Did he harm you by killing himself? He did it in a relatively peaceful manner, away from everyone. Life generally gets better? Wow. Is that true? How would you know? Just shut up and enjoy the music he left behind. At least he did that for you, which is more than what most people do.

Who said he was "trying" anything? He just sounds like he has an American accent when he sings. I also think The Beatles sound American when they sing. There is a clip from the Beatles' Anthology where they are asked in a press conference why they all sound American when they sing. Do you see my point? There is nothing offensive about thinking someone sounds a particular way.
