I’m glad you were able to get a few shots of this train! By understanding the deal that was made, my mind still wonders whether or not UP would want any of this equipment back after they get restored.

Recalling back to the original announcements earlier this year, IIRC, UP decided to dedicate their historical PR efforts to keeping 4014 and its train on the rails as long as possible. They made the difficult decision on what to let go permanent. Keeping all of this active was more burden than UP cared to invest.

The only one I'd see them MAYBE wanting back is 3985 or perhaps 6936. There's a slim chance they might want a third steamer in the future to extend 844's life as long as possible (since it's run for over 70 years). UP actually had little interest in restoring 5511, they said it's speed was too low and just not the type of engine they needed for their heritage operations. They had been trying to sell the engine for years (either for a display or operation), but no one ever really moved to purchase it until the folks in Silvis showed interest. If they can get her running successfully, 5511 might have found her perfect home. She's a huge 2-10-2 without much articulation, meaning the flatlands of Illinois, Iowa and Nebraska are the ideal place for her to run. Add in a team who hopefully will treasure and love her (after all 5511 is the last of her kind, the TTT class), and UP's "Forgotten Giant" may at last have a place to thrive and be used to her full potential.

They need to get all of these rusting hulks out of City parks and into good museums. Steamtown needs to sell the Canadian stuff to Canadian museums/ tourist railroads and acquire American pieces.

how inelegant and distasteful, moving some of the most iconic locomotives preserved by UP including the EMD DD A40x, with a beat up, dirty, smoking old GE junkamotive locomotive. At the least they could have used one of the EMD SD 70's or like locomotive. Glad that the DD, and the 3985 are going to be restored and brought back to running condition. Personally, I like the 3985 more than the 4014.
