    As many have noticed, Seles was not American citizen until 1994. I got my data from www.wtatennis.com/players/player/190141/title/monica-seles
    As you can see, only the current nationality is available through the website. Unfortunately, I didn't do enough research on my end either. My apologies to those feel offended. I will fix this issue in the next update.

    Steffi's resume and professionalism speak for themselves. 1988 was also her golden year, as she completed a Super Slam, the only player to have achieved that in a period of 12 months, winning all four Grand Slam Titles, the Olympic Gold Medal (Golden Slam), and the WTA Tour Championships. Graf won five major consecutive titles in 1988-89 and four more in 1993-94, making her the only women’s singles player to win four consecutive titles in a career - twice. She is also the only singles player, male or female to have won at least four titles at each Grand Slam, a sign of her remarkable versatility and adaptability across all kinds of surfaces. ALSO 377 Weeks at No.1 (lowest ranking was 93 back on 11/21/83 this was back when she debuted). Retired too early, she was ranked No.3 at time of retirement.

It's scary to think how many she would have amassed had she not been so brutally interrupted. At 19, Serena only had 1 grand slam. Still, Seles had the most amazing game I've ever seen. • @lgeiger
      @lgeiger 5 лет назад +18

      She had no competition, because she mastered a shot no woman can play that well. The backhand slice is an underrated and underused shot, especially in women's tennis today. Everyone is just playing brainless power tennis. If the girls would use their brain and play low slice shots against Serena, Serena would have tough time lifting the ball over the net with her 175 pounds.

    • @tjrtt
      @tjrtt 5 лет назад +3

    • @wilsoch
      @wilsoch 5 лет назад +6

      tjrtt not true. The slice - at least the way Steffi hit it - would be incredibly effective today. All the women today hit the same ball, hard and flat. That’s why Serena has prospered. Take the ball out of her zone and make her actually time it and add controlled pace, and she won’t be so effective. (Remember her loss in the US Open semis a couple years ago.). The other women would be even more pressed playing against that knifing slice.

    • @MalphasMikaelson
      @MalphasMikaelson 5 лет назад +18

      Her slice was amazing and she has one of the best forehands ever. That's some good variety.
      But anyone saying Steffi didn't have the competition that Serena had are absolutely false. Serena's toughest rival during her career has been her own sister. Have you seen some of the players Steffi beat to win Slams?
      Also Steffi retired at a pretty low age because of injury but also she was the best ever, so why wouldn't she. She had no real motivation anymore.
      Serena on the other hand won most her Slams after the age of 30 that's when Steffi already retired and there's no competition when Serena reached her 30's.
      Steffi faced players that were way more consistent. Steffi constantly met the same players in the final of Slams or even earlier. And we can't forget that Seles could have been the GOAT or at least make it similar to Navratilova vs Evert. Steffi vs Seles would be an all time rivalry. Serena has never faced a player at the level of Seles so while it is sad that she got stabbed that would only make Steffi have a truly truly tough career with playing a top 5 of all time player throughout her career, Serena hasn't had that. Serena faced some strong players but not consistently.

      I mean we'll never know how good Seles would have been if she wasn't stabbed.
      Maybe Seles would be considered the GOAT today if she wasn't stabbed. Maybe she would have still come up slightly short of the almost impossibly good run Graf had between 1987 and 1991.
      It's impossible to say.
      Important to note that the peak of Graf's career happened years before the stabbing. Take away half of Graf's titles 1993 on, and I think Graf is still arguably the GOAT simply because of how good she was in the late 80s

    I remember vividly when Monica Seles came in with her famous grunt and two-handed forehand-backhand combo and literally changed the game forever. The stabbing incident is the only reason why she didn't reach #1 on this list. No shade to the other ladies but Monica was simply legendary and freak of nature talent-wise.

      I hated the grunting. I always rooted against Seles (and Sharapova, and Serena) because I consider it to be unsportsmanlike. It is impossible to know, but I think it highly likely that if Seles had not been stabbed Serena would be #1 on this list because Seles and Graf--both of whom are better than Serena, in my opinion--would have split many titles and weeks at number one.

    Steffi Graf is the greatest female tennis player of all time. Her stats are better than Serena's in every category. The only reason people think Serena is better is because she's won one more slam than Graf (23-22). BUT people don't take into account Serena entered many more slams than Graf did and has played much longer. Actually Graf's enter to win ratio in slams is far better than Serena. Add to that Graf actually won the calendar golden slam and dominated her era like no other player. Serena has had to many highs and lows. Go take a critical look at the stats. Graf is greatest of all time.
    One more thing this SPECULATION Graf wouldn't have been as successful because of the Monica Seles stabbing is pure bull shit. Graf played who was in front of her. Graf retired on top and had she stayed in the sport may have won 30 slams.

    • @reynardtg
      @reynardtg 5 лет назад +2

      Well said Timothy. Statistically speaking Steffi's stats are far more impressive than Serena's. One of the ways I rank the greatest playersi is by comparing their best seasons. Steffi has had 5 seasons where she won 3 or more grand slams, 3 times where she won every match. Her 1988/89/93/95/96 seasons all rank in my top ten of all time. Only one of Serena's - 2002

    • @timothyhudson9976
      @timothyhudson9976 5 лет назад +3

      @@reynardtg Serena has the greatest serve of all time and maybe the best return of serve. Steffi had a great serve too and the superior forehand. Steffi was the best mover in tennis history. Her sliced back hand was natural and she volleyed better than Serena who is a mediocre volleyer. I prefer the fluid gazelle style of Graf to the power thuggery of Serena and and the modern game.

      @@timothyhudson9976 Agree with you. Was watching clips here from the Australian Open 1994 last week. Arguably Steffi at the peak of her powers, everything working, but her movement was phenomenal. One other thing that separated Steffi was her pursuit of perfection on the court rather than records, unlike Serena and Martina who nailed their colours to achieving status in the game as the best ever. When Steffi won her q/f against MJ Fernandez Wimbledon 95, for example, she was elated because she knew she had played near perfect tennis.

Shoes quite clearly how Serena's success in paper is really only due to the fact that she filled the gaps and took the trophies during the periods of time when competition was low. Whenever there were great players on the tour, Serena dropped in the rankings, and quite far at times. Nowhere near the domination of Navratilova, Graf or even Henin.

He knew which ones presented the greatest chance of victory combined with prize money. He was more about payout. That is why you now see serena grab appearance fees and bow out without trying to actually win. Money!!
