I think the finetec/coliro paints truly satisfy the need for bling. While they can be pricey, they also have mica sets that are amazing and somewhat better priced. Schmincke Aqua Bronze is my current metallic obsession. So shiny!
I bought the Rembrandt chameleon colors individually and I’ve used them almost every time I’ve done watercolor projects. I use them for everything from mermaid scales, to adding texture to bird feathers. They’re really expensive but I definitely plan to buy them again when mine run out.
There is nothing that compares to these in professional brands, I bought chameleon mica powder and made some small personal watercolor pans and they come really close except they aren't completely clear. But that is cheaper and more beautiful than any store bought set.
I love the Rembrandt on the black but I also like the Hobby lobby. I especially like the Hobby Lobby on the white....This was so informative and fun to watch....Thank you so much
Hey there 😊 I just discovered your channel and I just wanted to say how much I really really enjoy your approach to these comparisons... love that you just keep it real and have a deep chatty conversation with each other 🙃 Makes it very engaging 😅 I'm not planning on buying anything like these paints... But I'm literally sitting here leaning in squinting my eyes... Trying to decide the winners with you 😂👏
I greatly appreciate this video! I've been on the edge trying to decide about where to get beautiful metallic watercolors. Seeing them together like this and on white and black with good lighting! THANK YOU! ❤ I'm very tempted to buy the Hobby Lobby ones now but also want to put some of the winners on my birthday list! So thankful that I didn't buy the Soho now too. Just because there are better options.
I just received the Soho Metallic set for Christmas as I had it on my Wish List because another RUclipsr recommended it. I'm looking forward to painting with it as I really like the swatches you painted. I also have a pan of Finetec metallic gold. So fun. Thank you.
I think I would purchase the kuretake gem, opals and pearls for a combo for black and white paper. Those hobby lobby ones sure are amazing though. Being I don't use watercolor really often those could be the way to go as well. It is a tough choice. The rembrandts are spectacular but not for the price for the amount of use they would get by me.
Thank you so much Jennifer and Steve! Your Excellent Job on your website showing the comparisons in such an easy to read and follow, informative, well organized and fun manner. You two really work hard! You have my votes and subscription every time. The quality and obvious time and effort you put into your products and videos are unmatched! Your products from coloring books, swatch books, coloring pages, loose paper, and so on, are also amazing! They are all high quality and reasonably priced too. And you have sooo many helpful tools!! Absolutely STUPENDOUS!! 🤩 I just love y’all!
I'm not so much into metallic colours, but love gold and warm silver accents, so the Finetec is my fave. I just splurged £20 on a pan of Kremer pale gold paint, and an Art Spirits gold paint. Eagerly awaiting them in the post. Will have to check if Finetec do the real silver in single pans to complete my metal set. It's a lovely warm silver with good coverage.
Wow love this thorough comparison and swatches! This was very informative for someone who loves metallic watercolours! I own a lot of watercolours and they are all actually in that very expensive range of specialty paints as they are handmade. This video helped me curb the feeling I wanted to try these more affordable brands as the colour pay off and colour variety and finishes just do not beat the ones I have already! 😂
Watercolors are not a favored medium of mine but I was totally entertained and fascinated by this battle. As usual, fantastic job. You make my day a litter brighter.
love the metallic, glitter and transference colour comparison, I love the Schminke Professional metallic watercolour paints. I have a few brands, Derwant, Windsor and Newton Cotman, (not happy with them) The Kuretake are great when fully wet and loaded. The Fintec are possible the best with the largest variety of colours available, you can purchase individual pans or a variety of sets. My favouries are the Schminke and FInetec brands, Finetec has a much larger colour range
After watching your fun and informative video, I'm going to but the last set you showed. The Rembrandt special effects paint set. Thanks for your sharing your testing and thoughts on all art mediums. I'm a fan and subscriber for many years.
Happy new year Jennifer and Steve. Always great to heard from you, I love your channel and battle with colors and brands and your coloring ideas and swatches, they are really cool. Thanks for sharing. God bless you all!
I was surprised you liked the Kuretake Gems and they did look good when you swatched them. But I have that gem set and it didn't look anywhere as colorful and robust for me as it does for you on camera. I have the derwent and they're dismal. I LOVED the Rembrandt and would buy those no matter how much they are. My favorites are the Kuretake Opals. They make shimmery background on white paper when you're painting Christmas cards and whatnot. I have the Paul Rubens Gucai set and mine are awful. I almost think mine came from a defective batch. When I put water on them with the brush, they clump up in balls of paint and clumps on my paper. They were very oily to the touch when I first opened them before I even put brush to them to test them out.
I’m obsessed with the iuile (sp?) glitter watercolors, I haven’t found anything I like better, but I love the Rembrandt, those look lovely, but I’m on a tight budget, and I’ve been wanting those kuretake opals, and you have convinced me to get them!!! Thank you!!
I've been a Professional Watercolour Artist since the mid 70s and could open my own shoppe with the supplies I have collected over the years...the Rembrandt set you bought are not bad but by no means are worth that price! The Arteza Metallic set is actually much better and affordable! Most Metallics are not lightfast because Professional Artist don't use these paints normally for a professional piece of work...They tend to be more for craft projects and such! Personally I love the Kurtake and Paul Rubens and have been using them for years now!...Also you can make your own Metallic paints with some basic supplies that will be better than any set you can buy! ...Arteza has a complete collection of Micxa powers that can be transformed into gorgeous paint!!!! Buy the way the rating of "1" for lightfastness is a low rating...and using the Metallics for Dragonfly wings is a brilliant idea and creates a stunning result...I unfortunately had to stop my monthly subscription due to my current health problems...$$$ has become a problem for me after 5 years of my past membership...but as soon as I am able I hope to resubscribe to your excellent channel and source of amazing educational products...I especially use your products for when I teach my students....many blessings and thanks to you both for all that both you and Steve do for so many Creatives out there!!! ...and one more thing Jen...You truly need to start using Watercolours more than you have in the past! You are a brilliant Artist Jen and you would excel in this medium based on your past work! I love your creativity...and how much inspiration you give so freely to so many of us Jen!!! If you ever need any advice or tips and tricks it would please me so much to assist you in any way I could! Many blessings and a very Happy New Year to you both!!! Love, Rus from Bucks County Pennsylvania ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️🖌🎨🤓
I have the opals and gems. Where the opals really look their best is in thin washes on black paper. The color really pops when more of the black paper is seen through the wash of paint. If the layer gets too thick the opals look a lot like the gems.
This was so much fun! I'm sorry Rose did not want to stay through the whole video...I missed her snoring, lol. Those Rembrants are really something, but as you said, there are other great choices at a lower cost. At any rate, I'll be wanting the Rembrants, haha. That "dirty" water is the prettiest I've ever seen. I could meditate to that....need to figure out how to get it on a loop. Thank you for this fun video. Happy New Year with best wishes to you and your family!
If I had a budget I'd buy the expensive ones, but I know that they're not really what I would use. So I'd go for the Paul Rubens in the pink case as I know i'd definitely use those!
So, in reference to using those inference or light Pearl mica paints on white paper and not showing up well but you want the payoff, all you have to do is lay down some dark paint as a base underneath, the. When it’s dry go in with your interference shade on top to show up like it does on your black paper. Like when you do those nail polishes that really shine over black polish. Think of it that way.
Excellent advice, especially since I think that a person may struggle to find black cotton rag paper. Acid-free paper is still made out of wood pulp and eventually that lignin I guess overcomes the buffer and the paper becomes acidic again.
@@pennycandyys a good black 100% cotton watercolor paper is by Stonehenge, Aqua Black Pad. It does beautifully, but beware, it doesn’t like tape or masking fluid.
@@sunnycharacter You're right, I actually have that! I don't know if there are any others though, I think black is usually made from wood pulp, do you know?
Happy New Year to my favorite utube couple!!! Amazing swatching of metallic watercolor paint!!! I have Kuratake Gems... better than my Arteza metallics. I've also bought a gold and silver metallic single pan from Etsy... ok, I guess. What about metallic gouache or metallic acrylic? Do they work like these? Last year I made gift tags with Arteza metallic gouache and some acrylic and it showed up very well... but of course, opaque! God bless you in the New Year!!! With love from a grateful California Gramma ❤
I am a Kuretake girl. Love them all. I am getting a nice collection of them. The first set you swatched I gave to my granddaughter to start her art journey with. She’s turning into a little artist.
Fabulous review of these paints🤓. I own a few sets of metallic/pearl types. I would love to get the Rembrandt set, but I am retired, thus need to look at what I can afford and really need (the want monster is forever active🤣). I love colored pencil, watercolor and recently gouache. Also love crafting. Way too many supplies catch my eye. I may consider buying a smaller set of Soho, since several of the colors in that large set looks like duplicates. Before I shop, I will watch this video again. Thanks so very much for sharing your knowledge and time with us.😘. Happy New Year.
Haha, you could just gaze at the rinse water forever. They all had beauty in them. I have some Twinkling H2O's that I like, and some Interference Pearl Ex paints that work similar to the very expensive paints at the end. Love all things shiny!
Gosh I have debated on getting the Kuretaki paints for awhile now because I have the Paul Rubens in the pink tin & love them. Thanks for such a detailed review! Obviously the Rembrandt’s would be amazing but not my pocketbook!
I have only been following you since the summer and was happy to see this video bc I want some metallic paint for Christmas. Why is it everytime I watch you I buy something, like I just with the ruler and the circle maker 🤣. You need affiliate links for Amazon in Canada too so we can keep Rose in treats! I also wanted to say that I have never seen you in black before and that blouse was amazing on you. I wouldn't mind knowing where you bought it! Cheers from Niagara, Canada.
I got the Hobby Lobby one based on this review. I’m only going to be using white paper. I am very pleased with them. Would love to see you compare Lisilinka and Iuile handmade watercolors. I just got an Iuile dot card and OMG so incredibly sparkly 😊
Loved this video thank you!! I think what’s worth mentioning is that it depends where you’re located. For me UK Amazon has the Rembrandts for £68 which is $89 according to google. (I’d love them but I’m not going to buy them because that’s still too much for me!). I suspect the derwent and the cotman will be cheaper for me too. the Paul Rubens’s and kuretakes were really nice. I was surprised not to see the Arteza ones. I have them and I really love them. I’d have been so interested to see them in comparison to all these others! I want the kuretake opals even more now 😁
I love your videos I have been into metallics in pencils and paint and your videos are very well done. Thank you, love your hair here as well. Have a great New year and Thanks for putting in the time on these videos, hugs to puppy
Thank you for this information. I used a lot of metallic paints, Soho, Kerutake Shimmering, and the Fine Tec. I have never tried the Rembrandt, Paul Rubins and Van Go. However you are missing two, Skeims and Lisilinks. These are sold in Germany. They are expensive. I’m would like to try the Rembrandt and the Van Go.
I love finetec best for their metal colored metallics... goes on so smooth and opaque, not streaky. The kuretake and soho looked really good in terms of color pow. I enjoy the guccai ones, they have all kinds of effects and subtleties that really show off on rice paper. The real standout for me was the rembrandt dazzlers. I have a tube of one chameleon color, and it's divine. I think they're more whispery than shouty, and the flash as you shift your gaze makes you look again to see what's going on there. I am soooooo glad I'm committed to a No Buy until I actually start to use up my supplies, or I'd already have ordered the rembrandts and gems. Thanks for the eye candy, and have a sparkly new year!
I love metalics! I like the Finetec and the Rembrants are the best. I have been painting cards with my Finetecs but some of the effects of the Rembrants are fantastic.
Happy New Year 🎊 🎉. Love the video’s. It’s really hard to choose when the prices are so different. Hope you’re feeling good. The holiday’s are so exhausting , I always flare up around this time of year.
Beautiful paints 1 light fast meant excellent light fast I had to google it to make sure I’ve got some expensive water colour paints as I’m learning water colouring in journals canvases.. and I use them in my colouring book I’ve brought some beautiful home made paints from the Art sprit and Reneeressence
I ordered the Kuretake gems, Starry, and opals with a Christmas gift card the other day. It was fun seeing them being swatched here. Now I really can’t wait to get them!
Very enjoyable…The first set is my go to for colouring books…I don’t have the Finetek or Rembrandt sets but I do have the full set of Cosmic Shimmer from decades ago as individual pots…then had to get them in pallets again…😂❤
Metallic, pearl etc. don't usually have high lightfastness I don't think. The expensive ones aren't great really although on black they are lovely. Lindsay Weirich recommended Paul Rubens in that pink box. I use hobbylobby ones but rarely use Metallic.
❤You are so right! The expensive ones are like a galaxy on paper! And how about part of northern lights! And the ideas for white paper usage are wonderful! Thank you!
Kuretake has the same as the last set you swatched. I ordered me some to use when I do my dragonfly paintings. Love the Kuretake watercolors just made my collection larger.
Never tried kuratake but they are impressive I only use fintec for the vivid color, long lasting, and no streaking! Streaking is major issue as you are doing two quick brush stroke and they should blend seamlessly and no streaking at all!
I have a Fentec set which I liked but I quickly went through some of the pans, while they look generous not so true. Then I got the Soho which I mostly use on white watercolor paper and I like them. I think the interference color show up well for insect wings, aroas, dragon scales etc. My final thoughts, I would go with the less expensive sets and then supplement with single pans where possible of Rembrandt since those colors are so great on black, but I wasn't happy with them on white.
I just found you today and I am enjoying this comparison. I would love to see Lisilinka compared to these. Also, have you tried Csy metallics? Would like to see how they compare?
I'm new to your site and enjoyed your comparison show greatly. It has guided me to consider using some of them in my artwork. Thank you so very much. I hail from down under Australia. What I have to consider is the Asian market vs the rest. I may take a look soon at these wonderful glittery and shiny paints. I do love bling too! 😊😍💖
Here is a very helpful watercolor tip you should use a synthetic brush for these type of paints or any paint that is harder to activate I know that is a synthetic brush your using the mimics ...but they are to mimic natural hair so they're much softer something like a white bristle or a golden bristle brush would do you a lot better.
I really think Jennifer and hubby would be blown away by the Iulie sets! I wish I could afford them myself but I love the artwork Kristina Werner creates with the Iulies.. please consider Jennifer 🙏🏼🙏🏼🙏🏼
Why not just buy a pan or 2 of the really expensive paints? Which ones for me? I'm so glad that I have the kuretake starry and jewel tone metallics! Happy new year to y'all, as well. Thanks for letting us watch the battle!
Jen Jen Jen Jen Jen!!! Guess what I found? Pentel, the makers of sparkle pops, have new colors in their Pentel Dual Metallic. I was browsing Amazon and saw what looked to be different barrel colors and they WERE!!! It's on the package with the butterfly on it! Black box with sparkly butterfly!
The Rembrandt effects palette colors are so gorgeous! Oh I wish I had recommended the Etchr Metallic 12 half pan set. Its super vibrant and fun. And of course there are the Irredescent watercolors from Daniel Smith ;)
i have that fine tec set, very happy with them. they have other metalic/pearlescent colors i hope to get them someday. not sure about over 10$ per pan on those rhembrants, but i bet they would last for years because i don't see anyone making whole pictures with them (unless you really like to paint space). as highlights and small special effect areas they would really shine. my basic problem with the cheaper ones like hobby lobby and even the cottman's is that they do not give very good coverage. they tend to be unable to stand alone and i have had a hard time getting them to apply smoothly. i might have to layer fine tec twice for full coverage but it is easy to get good even coverage with them. in fact i used them on the portal edging of my logo.
Hi Jennifer, as far as I know none of the iridescent are lightfast because of the Mica in them. I love shinny watercolors...you can add the Sennelier to your list..they come in tube form and cheaper than the Rembrandt ones. Nice Job through!
These are all beautiful but I was wondering if you have done a review on skrim watercolors they look so incredibly beautiful but pricey! I can’t seem to find any RUclips reviews only tutorials by the brand .
I was hoping the Paul Reubens would be better, since I love my regular watercolors of thiers. But, after seeing this- I am going for the Finetech and the Rembrandt!
Thanks for the info. I did just drop the $118 for the Rembrandt pans, however, I will tell you that there are 10ml tubes of this set on Craft Stash for 136.79. That's an extra pan at least for about $18 more...a really great deal!
I think to start I would do a set like the Hobby Lobby just to see if I liked using metallics. I like that it has an array of colors to work with. I am looking at the colors. If I wanted the glitter and glow there are a couple that I think are workable, but the Rembrandt's are amazing. I could never see myself spending the money on those, but they are very nice.
I think the finetec/coliro paints truly satisfy the need for bling. While they can be pricey, they also have mica sets that are amazing and somewhat better priced.
Schmincke Aqua Bronze is my current metallic obsession. So shiny!

love my Finetec metallics. I have the 24 set.
I love the Rembrandt on the black but I also like the Hobby lobby. I especially like the Hobby Lobby on the white....This was so informative and fun to watch....Thank you so much
Rembrandt also comes in tubes. Pretty much the same price as half pans. I want THAT set.

Happy New Year 2024 for all of you.
Thank you very much for this extraordinary review!
Loving your hair💜💜💜
I think it would be fun to paint a view of a coffee cup and paint the pretty metallic rinse water for the coffee inside.
For me, it's the Rembrandt's, hands down, IF I was trying to produce professional WC paintings.
I've been watching for months now and just now realized I wasn't subscribed. So happy to have found this channel
Very enjoyable…The first set is my go to for colouring books…I don’t have the Finetek or Rembrandt sets but I do have the full set of Cosmic Shimmer from decades ago as individual pots…then had to get them in pallets again…😂❤
Please do a black coloring page using those Rembrandt paints!
Patty-I already have the Kuretake sets. I like the Van Gogh metallic and the Paul Rubens. As much as I like Rembrandt. I can't justify the cost.
Thank you!
Does the Finetec real silver tarnish with age?
Kuretake has the same as the last set you swatched. I ordered me some to use when I do my dragonfly paintings. Love the Kuretake watercolors just made my collection larger.
Never tried kuratake but they are impressive I only use fintec for the vivid color, long lasting, and no streaking! Streaking is major issue as you are doing two quick brush stroke and they should blend seamlessly and no streaking at all!
How about Lisilinka?
Same question. I like to see Lisilinka up against IUILE.
I like Lisilinka as well.
I use Finetec paints for illuminated lettering and love them
Same here. Good for my calligraphy pens.
The Rembrandts win for me, but are beyond the budget of many. I think for hobbyists and colorists, the Kuretaki paints are probably the best.
Have you tried the iuile watercolors?
I love iuile!!!❤
I really think Jennifer and hubby would be blown away by the Iulie sets! I wish I could afford them myself but I love the artwork Kristina Werner creates with the Iulies.. please consider Jennifer 🙏🏼🙏🏼🙏🏼
Happy New Year Jennifer, Steve,🌹 and family! I hope 2024 is an awesome year for you! Can you include links to these paints?
You bet. I made a blog post with all of the links here: www.coloringbliss.com/metallic-pearlescent-watercolor-paint-battle/
The end of the brush fits in beside the pan to take it out also removes the top of palette to give you more mixing area
I love the finetec, as they can be purchased singularly, and the colours are magnificent.
Hello Jennifer from Germay. Thanks for the video, its helps me a lot with my decision❤
I’m very new to watercolour (only got my paints a week ago) but I’m very tempted by the Kuretake starry pallet
I go for Rembrandt and finetec 🤩
I think to start I would do a set like the Hobby Lobby just to see if I liked using metallics. I like that it has an array of colors to work with. I am looking at the colors. If I wanted the glitter and glow there are a couple that I think are workable, but the Rembrandt's are amazing. I could never see myself spending the money on those, but they are very nice.
I love the Kuretake ones.
