I think a lot of commenters are quite confused about what is happening here. The whole point of confession is that you're basically guaranteed to be forgiven anyway, this is why Catholics believe Jesus "died for our sins". It would be far more surprising if any of these confessions were refused. This has been the role of the Church and this encounter for centuries. Whether you agree with the implications or not, there is nothing new or controversial here.

@@Paula-tc6tj Forgiveness is an integral part of the church's teachings, and he would be forgiven for what he did. However, the confessor's act of lying and recording the confession violates the sanctity of the sacrament, which is a serious matter. Despite this, the church remains a pillar of support and guidance for those seeking repentance, regardless of their transgressions. It is important to note that if the confession was fabricated solely for the purpose of creating content, it holds no value as a genuine act of contrition and undermines the purpose of the sacrament.
Shockingly the age of consent in Italy is actually 14 so thats why he wasnt considered a pedo confessing that in Italy and hence the priest asked what the law is in his country
Catholic debunking things here And we aren’t hiding anything because you can very easily read the catechism or ask a priest about church teaching. 0:43 Working on Sunday is not a sin 0:45 simply being gay is not a sin, it is the acts that are. We don’t go hunt down gay people. 0:53 they will not report you under their seal of secrecy, but will recommend that you turn yourself in. If they reported you always, no one would go to confession and receive absolution. 3:33 this priest is going about it all wrongs, because I have never heard a single priest I’ve met talk about changing sexualities. Note again, this was one priest out of literally tens of thousands. For all I know you specifically choose the worst one. For all of this forgiving stuff, please understand that the priest is simply a medium for God forgiving you. God will forgive you; he has unconditional love for all of us. However the law is much less forgiving. Confession does not put one above the law. Thank you, have a nice day. If you have questions, ask a priest, read the catechism, or watch Fr. Mike videos cause he’s good at explaining things.
Actually it's legally FORBIDDEN for the priest to tell someone what you confess in there. It's different in all countries. Example in Germany you can confess everything and the priest can be sued for telling anyone else till 45k€!

I really hope some people who are religious watch this video so they're able to assess their own motives in religion. Awesome video as always ^_^
how is not being ok with murder an ideology to be challenged? peoples religion is not something to be progressive, if u dont like it u dont have to associate with it but this is disgustingly disrespectful and if your not willing to do this to an islamic leader in a sacred place he should not feel comfortable mocking christianity like this. disgusting.
Daniel Peterson, Confession is a sacrament where one confesses their sins and repents. The priest's role is to help obtain forgiveness from God and oneself, and they cannot divulge any information shared during confession. This video is disrespectful as it violates the sacrament's sanctity. Furthermore, the confession likely lasted longer than the edited version presented, and the priest should have encouraged the confessor to turn themselves in, repent, and face the consequences of their actions, which I'm sure he did.

They can have their fun but imagine a world where we didnt forgive eachother or God held grudges against us and refused to forgive. You may be forgiven many times as it is in the power of the one offended to CHOOSE to forgive but in the end the sinner destroys himself. I hope one day you can infiltrate the Church and expose the Freemasons and communist infiltrators.
Does the Church have the ability to forgive sin? No Is Sunday, the day of the Church proclaimed by a former Pope, the Lord's Day? No, that's considered Sun worship. Does the Papacy proclaim itself the representation of God on Earth? Yes, and that is blasphemy as are the other two. Believe in the Bible, not the Church, and follow the Bible, not Man.
@@ELXABER Thank you for responding. In the Bible we see that Jesus Christ founded a Church with actual people. The Bible doesnt claim itself as the only authority because the Bible states that Jesus gives the Church authority. It can be argued that if Jesus made Peter the Rock and said that on this Rock "I will build my Church" then it seems to make sense that Peter became the head of the Church and therefore Christ's representative ie God's representative. If you disagree then you need to explain the correct translation, context and theological understanding to make your point convincing. Remember that God does not play games with ambiguous meanings. Catholics worship God on Sunday which replaces the pagan sun worship. Without the Catholic Church protecting the Bible for 1500 years there would not be any Bible.

How do we solve this hot potato? Even atheists dont have any conclusive answers except that they are not sure.
As a non-practicing Catholic who is baptized and confirmed (I usually just say I’m Christian), I honestly wasn’t shocked by the outcome of the video one bit. I learned pretty early on that the church’s vow to withholding the contents of confessions is one of the strictest things they can’t break.
You should go to confession and take a poop in the confession booth while you talk to him. Then next week confess to taking a poop in the confession booth and force him to forgive you for stinking his confession booth up with shit.
I mean this isn't shocking truth, everyone knows the catholic church is against homosexuality. Also most people know that the priests aren't allowed to talk about confessions outside of the booth no matter what it is, they're sworn to secrecy.
Based on the number of comments stating similar reactions such as "This one is wild," "That's crazyyyy," "not surprising, but still shocking," it's clear I'm not alone in feeling unsettled by the video. Just because someone knows about the Catholic Church's beliefs doesn't mean they can't be disturbed by seeing them in practice. Your patronizing comment doesn't help anyone. This hits hard for me. I put my own biological father in prison for the rest of his life, about 80 years, because he sexually abused me and other members of my family. As I was making a written statement for the police, he was texting my mom that he's was seeking forgiveness from God at the local Catholic church. My district attorney heard he made a confession and asked if the priest if he would testify, but he didn't want to because it was said in confessional and he has the right. It made me so mad, how could that even be legal? It's actually insane that they can be told such things and simply move on. Last I heard, my father is a minister at the prison, how lovely. Religion to me is just harmful for the most part.

I mean this is not surprising, and nor should they be forced to report such things. This is coming from a non religious and understanding person. Obviously what happened is bad, but the nature of religion literally prevents them from telling the authorities. Even if they did, they believe that the ultimate judgement comes from god. The whole idea of a confessional is quite nice, really
One the one hand, I get that the church probably doesn’t want to deter people from confessing (which, of course, might happen if confessing to crimes could expose people to legal consequences.) On the other hand, though, if people are truly remorseful, they should presumably be willing to face punishment for their crimes, and if they aren’t, they’re probably to some degree not truly repentant. Allowing people confess without facing any consequences might encourage more people to confess, but I don’t think it would encourage real repentance-on the contrary, I think it would allow people to assuage their guilty consciences without actually owning up in a real way. Most importantly, though, most crimes have victims. Leave the punishment of the perpetrator up to god, fine, whatever, but protect the victims! How would you feel if you found out that a priest knew that you were being abused but did nothing to get your abuser away from you?? The purpose of reporting is to protect current and possible future victims, and refusing to do this is absolutely awful.
@@caitlinbrennan9039 Uh, what? No one’s saying “if someone confesses to a crime, lock them up immediately.” I’m just saying “do what you’d do in any other scenario where someone told you they committed a serious crime”-report it to the police.
I knew priests would be homophobic but I had no idea that they could hear a crime and not report it to the police. I thought it worked like therapists, if they heard of harm to someone they had to report. This is so scary. I can’t imagine all the things they have heard and let the person get away. I’m really happy you did this video I wish more people would expose this backward way of thinking
It's called reconciliation. Atheists wouldn't understand this. Christians, as well as Jews and Muslims, do this as an act of confession to God, not the police. Clergy are only there to guide them. In fact, clergy are not even required in confession. Clergy do not be a bunch of pricks and tell the confessor to hide their crimes, they would always advise them to turn themselves in if they have committed a crime that deserves jail time and that time has not been served.
Homophobic means ' an irrational fear of humans' but has come to mean hatred of homosexuals. To disagree with someone is not hatred of the person. My friend thinks shes the Queen of England and I dont agree with her but I still love her. A doctor loves the patient but "hates" the illness.
Actually they have reported these crimes. Not all of them I'm sure, but I'm a bit a true crime nut and I've heard several cases that were solved because priests broke their vows. Also, not catholic, but I believe confession is anonymous so in cities, it's basically impossible to catch someone in report like this. And would you even hear about it anyway? There's also an issue with UK police not caring about serious crimes and only going after easy crimes like mean tweets. Over the pandemic one district even releases 800 pedophiles without trial despite dozens of victims coming forward (it was a gang). In some cases the same men are belived to have trafficked more than a thousand girls over more than a decade.
I think the gay part of this video is insensitive. I struggle to balance my queerness and my Catholicism, and I have been in the confessional doing this for real. It did not go like this. There are actual queer human beings like myself who try to love both the church and themselves. It’s more complicated than you’ve made it out to be by confessing a sexual act you didn’t do, in a sacrament you don’t believe in.
God bless you in the struggle to remain faithful for Christ. Those who resist temptation will be crowned with glory in heaven. Some people like Josh and Archie wish to mock institutions without making any attempt to understand them. May God bless you, and keep the faith.

Recording a private confession says a lot about you, but publishing to make fun of it, even worst. If you're not catholic it's ok but at least you should respect other people behaviours, if they think this way, let them be. I'm sure you won't go to a mosque with your same speech wont you...
So you don't have a problem with what was said but the fact it's now open in public... thus proving the point of this whole thing. The condemnation of grooming is written ALL OVER the Catechism of the Catholic Church, the modern Bible is dumb terms. CCC 2285: "Scandal takes on a particular gravity by reason of the authority of those who cause it or the weakness of those who are scandalized. It prompted our Lord to utter this curse: "Whoever causes one of these little ones who believe in me to sin, it would be better for him to have a great millstone fastened round his neck and to be drowned in the depth of the sea". Scandal is grave when given by those who by nature or office are obliged to teach and educate others. Jesus reproaches the scribes and Pharisees on this account: he likens them to wolves in sheep's clothing." CCC 2353: "Fornication (…) it is a grave scandal when there is corruption of the young." CCC 2356: "Rape is the forcible violation of the sexual intimacy of another person. It does injury to justice and charity. Rape deeply wounds the respect, freedom, and physical and moral integrity to which every person has a right. It causes grave damage that can mark the victim for life. It is always an intrinsically evil act. Graver still is the rape of children committed by parents (incest) or those responsible for the education of the children entrusted to them." CCC 2389: "Connected to incest is any sexual abuse perpetrated by adults on children or adolescents entrusted to their care. the offense is compounded by the scandalous harm done to the physical and moral integrity of the young, who will remain scarred by it all their lives; and the violation of responsibility for their upbringing."

Hey Josh and Archie! I am actually a big fan of your channel! I just want to express a few things because I am disappointed by the experiences you had with the church in this video... Maybe I can clarify and shed some light on those things that I feel were lacking from the priests/are hard to understand. The priest in confession is not to pass judgment. They are not fulfilling the role of a person in this case but as a helpful mediator between you and God. God is speaking through them when they say "You are forgiven," and without God they have absolutely no authority to forgive sins. Just in the same way that God would not be going around telling other people about your sins, the priest is not allowed to either. They can, however, outside of confession encourage you to seek action and turn yourself into authorities. I have heard a lot of priests who are heartbroken over things they have heard, but understand that the information is between the repentant and God. Also, keep in mind that you are only forgiven if you are Catholic/preparing to become Catholic, truly sorry, and confess to all the sins you remember. Additionally, forgiveness doesn't mean that your sin is "okay," and grave sins (such as sex with a minor or murder) likely result in some sort of repentance after death (i.e. time in purgatory) before entering heaven. Despite mercy, they still leave a mark on your soul. I am sad to see in this that the priests were not sensitive to the issues at hand and when probed for advice were unhelpful and did not provide proper guidance. Unfortunately, some priests are poorly trained in this area. I have been lucky to have great priests who are nurturing my faith journey and truly care. Sidenote: If there is a really long line (which is especially likely in Rome) the priest normally will not give substantial advice as they want to make sure that everyone can confess their sins... Confession is not meant to be therapy. If you are looking for a good priestly representative of the Catholic Church watch some videos by Fr. Mike Schmitz. I am no theologian and recently converted to Catholicism so there are plenty of people who could give much better explanations of the topics covered in this video.
@@dodgemf1 Damn bro, you're starting to sound like a broken record, "But the priest, what about the priest, yeah but the priest tho, did you know the Priests, yeah the Priests actually..." right man, we get it, any other arguments other than "But what about the Priests"?
@@dodgemf1 it’s a terrible situation and hurts me to see. There’s absolutely no excuse for this behavior and it’s downright disgusting. There needs to be serious policy change. Unfortunately the devil tries to work itself into the holiest of places. It’s a situation of God’s church being perfect, but the people in it being sinful. With that said, I wouldn’t generalize the church due to what a great minority of priests have done. The church is the biggest in the world, which leaves much more room for corruption. If you look at the stats, many Protestant denominations have higher rates of abuse than the Catholic Church does. Not to say that these churches are worse, as I love Protestant brothers and sisters, but it is inaccurate to assume that the Catholic Church is the only one responsible. With all that, I hope that the survivors of this abuse are able to receive the help they need. Once again, I’m truly heartbroken when hearing about these cases and these priests need to have their priesthood revoked immediately.
@@dodgemf1 There you go again, " But what about the priests!!", same argument repeated over and over, and besides, who said I hate gay people? Sounds like you're making stuff up now
The fact is tolerance goes both ways. We may not fully understand the Christian faith we should tolerate because they tolerate living among those who don't believe in how they live. Also from the catholic priests point of view the hail marys and prayers and psalms are meant to allow God to work redemption in you. The forgiveness of God is absolute in their eyes and if we accept his forgiveness he will transform us to good. It's actually very powerful if taken seriously by the one seeking transformation. The idea is God will lead them to do the right thing. Disclaimer I don't necessarily believe this. I much prefer the confidentiality of the therapist where information is confidential with limits on harming oneself or others or knowing of another who might harm themselves or another.
A couple of things I don't get in this video: The "Gay confession". Whether someone likes it or not, Church says it's a sin. What is shocking in that scenario: "A: I came to confess. I did homosexual things, is it a sin? B: Yes. A: What should I do then? B: Stop doing them and go to a specialist", when it's clear that it's what the church teaches. BTW, Josh was the first one to bring up the "Conversion therapist", and, as later said in the video it's "SOON" to be illegal to suggest that. When it will be illegal, you have another video idea, catching priests proposing illegal treatment. About the "Murder" one, when you confess and the priest says you are forgiven, it doesn't end there. There are Repentance, Redemption, Restitution, Reconciliation, & Restoration. Do you think that a Christian thinks:" ok I have murdered someone, I'll just go to confess and everything is fine. It's a more complicated process(If you believe in that), not like it was portrayed in the video. About the secrecy of confession, You confess your sins to God, not a man. If you think that anyone who heard someone confess to a crime, must give that information to the authorities, I would suggest starting with lawyers, and defenders in court.
As a Christian, I don’t agree with most of what the priests said in this video. But it does annoy me when people believe that every religious person is like this, because I’m not.

How hard is it to understand? According to christians god can forgive you everything if you truly regret it. And a priest wont tell anyone your sins, no matter how many people you killed or will kill. And although Im not a believer in god, I personally think, thats wonderful. The Papacy has another name that it doesn't much care for, written in the Bible, The Little Horn of the First Beast, the Roman Empire. It is blasphemous in proclaiming itself God on Earth, stating it has the authority to forgive sin, and practices worshiping the Sun on the Day of the Church, Sunday, declared by a former pope, instead of the Sabbath, the Lord's Day. These are facts. Read your Bible. If you want a thorough recount of exactly how the Papacy is the Little Horn watch: From Babylon to America.
The idea with confession is fine, if one is truly sorry and realizes their mistake, there truly is no reason why God shouldn't forgive them. Of course, no one believes that it fixes the problem because it doesn't. If you broke your neighbors window and ask for forgiveness, that doesn't mean the window is fixed, but you and your neighbor are chill. Now if you go break the neighbors window again, your neighbor will be really mad, and it's the same with God. The priests assumed he was legitimately sorry for his "sins" so they had forgiven him. It is a massive massive sin to just go to confession and pretend that you're sorry (and you're not forgiven I think). I don't know what to say about the 14-year-old relationship one though, that's kinda weird, I know my priest and most wouldn't say that and would say to end the relationship.
Unpopular opinion, there's nothing wrong with what the priests in these videos did lol when they're sworn in as priests they take an oath to secrecy for confession and can actually get into trouble if they reveal anything that was said. Oh yeah and homosexuality is definitely a sin 😉
How's homosexuality a sin when it's litterary part of nature. More than 400 different species have been observed practicing homosexuality, yet only one have problem with it
I can understand some actions are concidered a sin like theft or murder, but being homosexual Is not their fault. Poeple are just born with that and they can't just choose not to be. They are not doing it on purpose.
Btw the high cofe church also have confessions, or so I have been told. I hope you passed this on to the police. You should repeat this in the UK & see how that goes...

Hello big verified channel
I think a lot of commenters are quite confused about what is happening here. The whole point of confession is that you're basically guaranteed to be forgiven anyway, this is why Catholics believe Jesus "died for our sins".
It would be far more surprising if any of these confessions were refused.
This has been the role of the Church and this encounter for centuries.
Whether you agree with the implications or not, there is nothing new or controversial here.

0:45 simply being gay is not a sin, it is the acts that are. We don’t go hunt down gay people.
0:53 they will not report you under their seal of secrecy, but will recommend that you turn yourself in. If they reported you always, no one would go to confession and receive absolution.

Does the Church have the ability to forgive sin? No
Is Sunday, the day of the Church proclaimed by a former Pope, the Lord's Day? No, that's considered Sun worship.
Does the Papacy proclaim itself the representation of God on Earth? Yes, and that is blasphemy as are the other two.
Believe in the Bible, not the Church, and follow the Bible, not Man.
@@ELXABERThe bible is my favourite work of fiction
@@TheJoeman11 He didn't make them the authority, he made them representatives, and they proclaimed themselves the authority.
He didn't give any man the authority to forgive sin, worship the sun, or change the Bible in its most fundamental way by changing the wording of the 10 commandments, it did not give the authority for an all-encompassing religion. Nearly everything the Catholic church has told its followers is blasphemy according to the word, which also accordingly is unchangeable.

If God makes someone a representative then they have authority for the area of relevance IF they present it authentically.
Anyone can forgive sins committed against them. Your mother can forgive you for being a difficult child for example.
God can also forgive us and since He is in heaven He might want to use representatives on Earth. Can a supreme being set up its own organization?
If there's one God and this God claims to be truth then it follows that there can only be one religion in the end without any contradictions in its dogma - its theological doctrine.
If there are many Gods then how do we test them to be real? Do we include any religion a person likes or invented?
If there is no God then how do we begin to prove that?
How do we solve this hot potato?

I mean this is not surprising, and nor should they be forced to report such things. This is coming from a non religious and understanding person. Obviously what happened is bad, but the nature of religion literally prevents them from telling the authorities. Even if they did, they believe that the ultimate judgement comes from god. The whole idea of a confessional is quite nice, really
One the one hand, I get that the church probably doesn’t want to deter people from confessing (which, of course, might happen if confessing to crimes could expose people to legal consequences.)
On the other hand, though, if people are truly remorseful, they should presumably be willing to face punishment for their crimes, and if they aren’t, they’re probably to some degree not truly repentant.

Also, not catholic, but I believe confession is anonymous so in cities, it's basically impossible to catch someone in report like this. And would you even hear about it anyway?
There's also an issue with UK police not caring about serious crimes and only going after easy crimes like mean tweets. Why is nobody talking about the fact that the priest didn’t care about the fact that the girl was a child but only cares that they weren’t married.
I don't think he didn't care. What he was actually saying was that sex outside of marriage is wrong according to the Catholic Church, so maybe he thought he needed to clarify what the Church teaches since the guy confessing was talking about their "loving relationship" and didn't seem to think that being unmarried was a sin too.
But he did ask about whether it was illegal and then told him to repent, so he probably did care about the age aspect.
Why are the Christians in the comments so mad, I’m sure these guys don’t care that you’re unsubscribing guys. We don’t welcome people who believe being gay is something you can disagree with, it’s just a way to be that isn’t straight, saying you disagree with our existence is like saying that you don’t agree that broccoli exists. We exist even if you don’t like it and we don’t care what you say about us because we know that you all just refuse to evaluate yourselves and how you live your lives so you can do better for yourselves and others 🏳️🌈🏳️🌈🏳️🌈 thank you for speaking about this both of you!
You can be christian and not homophobic, many are its just unfortunately responsible for some of the hatred towards the gay community.
as a queer christian i was lucky enough to find a church with a progressive and actively pro lgbt message. it really doesn't take much for christians to realise God loves all their creation and made people the way they are. if someone is using their religion to justify hate then they cant call that christianity because christians believe in jesus and he didn't look very kindly on those who hated others or judged others

After knowing what we now know about decades of abuse perpetrated by priests to young boys, you thought, seems like a decent community to join.
@@AlphaLama. you'll defend paedophile priests, yet hate gay men outside the church, you're pathetic.
Are you out of your mind ? Of course the Catholic Church doesn't tolerate living almond non-believers. Don't you know what crusades are ?

Did I just watch an episode of panorama? 😅
One thing is certain, any one who states that they're religious, is gullible.

I mean I’m catholic but I do not care what people do. Sure I think being gay is a sin but I have my political opinion and religious opinion I keep them separate. Leave people alone. There’s a verse where Jesus is brought a prostitute and they say she is to be stoned. Jesus then says the first who has committed no sin is to throw the first stone. Respect people leave them alone
this is ridiculous
I mean the whole catholic system of confession is based on that you’re not confessing to the priest but to the god himself. Because of that they shouldn’t go to police because the god will judge your actions.
It's not they're against the idea of justice system judging people, it's that the Confessional just isn't a part of that.

@Veganismdebunked812 Ok, go watch the video and argue with the facts then. Come back and disprove just one.
Why are you guys taking the piss out of the church? I dare you to do the same to Islam.
