This is the first I I never heard of this. Interestingly enough my grandmother was the first person I knew with it died in 1989 also and tried to keep it secret for fear that we wouldn’t love her anymore. She got hers from a blood transfusion in 1982. Just a shame how badly we treat people with diseases. It’s known that when people had cancer in the early times of understanding cancer that just saying somebody had it would be shunned for fear of catching it. I hope we’ve come along way and understanding how things are contracted. My thoughts go out to all the people who passed from this terrible disease.

Poor Lady, she was a great actress, loved her as miss Kitty. Doc, Festus , and Miss Kitty would come to the Pikes Peak or Bust Rodeo for many years. I was a kid feeding the stock, she walked by and said you look hot how about a big glass of lemonade? So I took a break and miss Kitty bought be a lemonade. I could tell she loved the animals.

One major theory I always heard was she contracted it from a possible blood transfusion from a surgery she had had a few years before. Whatever the reason, I guess it really doesn't matter because we lost a great woman to a terrible disease

Ok, but you don't get AIDS just because you went to Africa, so the question still remains HOW did she get it?

You don’t contract AIDS from visiting Africa. Did she have a “friend” on the side in Africa? Was she injured and received a blood transfusion with tainted blood? Without the answer that last part is pure speculation without a base and could’ve been left out. I do love me some Gunsmoke though and the chemistry with costars and her portrayal as Ms Kitty were aware some to watch.

i was around 11 when i started watching Gunsmoke. along with George Reeves’ Lois Lane, Jeff’s mom in Lassie, women scientists in ‘50’s scifi movies, and Bette Davis, she was one of my models of womenhood. there weren’t that many in those days. Even Syd Caesar had only one woman comedian, Imogene Coca, whom i also loved, but that was the early ‘50’s. i liked strong women even as a kid. there definitely were other woman ‘stars’ in the ‘50’s - Nina Foch, Dinah Shore - but they were my models. Amanda Blake was amazing as Miss Kitty and i knew she and Matt Dillon had a thing. of course, in my early twenties, i realized they really had a Thing going. :) 🌷🌱
i’m sorry to hear she died only ay 60. 🥀

That she died of A.I.D.S. is of no consequences as far as I'm concerned. There are other means of acquiring the disease besides unnatural sex, or by tainted needles. I doubt that Ms. Blake had either in her past.
