the real game is trying to figure out the release order of RPG maker engines
Seems to be reverse alphabetical? XP, VX, MV
Also noticing a pattern where the second letter of each is the first letter of the prior, like a new letter is being shifted in on the left... and the third letter on the right is deleted.
Both of these patterns are probably coincidental, but at least right now, that seems to work.

@@stickycontroller3200 The older ones like all the Ruby-based ones (including VX & VX Ace) don't, but IIRC MV was the first to be able to at least run in the mobile RPG Creator app.
I still remember messing around with RPG Maker 2000 as a kid. It was my first experience creating anything. Also where I started editing images, something that evolved into learning Photoshop later.

I remember reading tutorials for RPG Maker back in the 2000s, and just like the authors had no idea how to even use the programs... one of them was just like "don't use the '%' operator, because no one knows what it does." 😅
My first experience was on RPG Maker Tsukuru 2 on SNES. Ah, how time passed by...
I can't wait for next February 2026 to grab my "RPG Maker MV"...

RPG Maker never dies
I bought RPG Maker VX Ace when it first came out. One of the frustrating things about it was trying to do a side-battler like Final Fantasy. To accomplish this with Ace, you really need to get some plugins to make it work. It isn’t native to the system. Since the engine had just upgraded, it was harder to find compatible plugins at the time. Today I’m sure it’s much easier.
RPG Maker MV and MZ solved this problem by implementing a native side battler system.

I use RPG Maker MZ, and one of the biggest changes from the older versions to the newer ones like RPG Maker MZ and RPG Maker MV are the plugins. They allow to modify the engine or add elements that would be impossible or difficult to implement otherwise. The community has made a ton of free ones over every RPG Maker versions. And while it's possible to run plugins made in RPG Maker MZ or RPG Maker MV between both versions by tweaking them, it's not the case for all of them. Also, due to the different coding languages between MZ and MV versus older version like VX and XP, it's not possible to use plugins between those.
In a way, plugins are like what mods are to minecraft

@ As far as I know, ruby code isn’t supported on ios or android which is used in VX unlike MV or MZ which uses javascript and can be exported as a web version, which in turn can be converted into a mobile format. If you want to try one of their engines, I suggest MV, which has most of the features of MZ and is heavily discounted

Started with MZ now I have all of them, will be switching to MV as there are more free plugins for MV than MZ out there and most of the MZ plugins are just MV with a new coat of paint that crash MZ there are a few that can work back and forth but not many without editing the plug-in directly to fit MZ properly, now I can do the task of moving each aspect of the game I was making over to MV and tweak it more, almost 2 years in the making but I need some plugins that only work on MV that are free and don't cost an arm and leg on MZ 😂😂
Is MV the best choice then?
I am using RPG Maker MZ to make a card game. It is good to see them still giving away the older versions.
I've tried a free RPG Maker long ago in the past but found it too limiting for what I wanted, and then life happened or something and never returned to my project. I'll pick this up anyways to see what I can do with an updated version and my new but not good programming skills. It could be useful for exploring some short story ideas and world building.
SAME. I returned to vx ace actually a while ago and I think it's pretty satisfying rn to be making something pushing vx ace to tis limits with new programing knowledge
@@RwarPandaMaid Godot user here, same same... i'm just wanting to build a world and story arc, not code the universe, BUT that does help to know what an engine can really do. i grabbed this to see if it's time to cut cords with Godot and try RPG Maker.
Currently using and have released a game RPGMaker MZ, which has a lot of QOL features I would miss going back. I've been working with RPG Maker stuff since the 2000s though, so I'm actually already familiar with VX Ace among others.
nice, i waited for a discount for the deckbuilding engine - and bc i already owned rpg mv, i got an extra 45% on the bundle :D
As a Linux user i am stuck in MV, the only version with a native Linux port.
What about proton?
@alexguy7395 could do that, but I rather use a native tool, that way I don't have to mess with mapped drives and whatnot.
Proton is fine for running a non-native game, but running a tool is just a pita.

VX Ace isn't one I'd recommend, mostly because it's not cross-platform and people aren't really making plugins for it anymore. However, it does have the best sprites out of the RPG Makers (imho). Not sure what the licensing is, but you may be able to use the Ace assets in a different RPG Maker product, so it could still be worth grabbing for that purpose

If you know Javascript and plan on getting RPG Maker, I would recommend MV or MZ. You can save a lot of time.
I have a copy of the "Advanced Game Design" for a while. Pretty good read
looks like a pretty good haul on books. i know the suggested retail price is a "bit" inflated since a lot of these are college level text books... so they're gonna get their cheddar. but all in all WOW it's a huge starter library of info on design AND development.

That is a website decision, not an engine decision. Once your game is uploaded, you then decide those things.
@@FleshToDust I was talking about the legality of it. Their original statement as far as I remember was "feel free to monetize your creations as long as you bought your copy of the engine"

What I’m especially interested in is the upcoming Action Game Maker! I’ve been learning Godot recently so I’m wondering if it uses GDScript? That would be oddly convenient for me.
Ruby and Smalltalk were the only langues to do object-oriented programming right. I dislike that RPG Maker went to Javascipt, Ruby is just a better langue to write code in. MV which is not the latest has linux support, so you can use it on a steamdeck.
Got the Free one but i saw Another version with 95% discount which is RPG maker MV. Is there any major difference between those two?
Currently making a game in MZ. The only thing I really take advantage of in that is JavaScript support.

As a retro fan I've always found the Maker series interesting and own a couple, but their naming system is terrible and I've always had trouble telling them apart.

XP says it does support 64 bit platforms, however it still works in Windows 10 64 bits, give thanks Microsoft not Gotcha Gotcha. VX lacks support for multiple tilesets, that is the worse, VX Ace allows up to five on the same map. MV and MZ are Javascript, which you might or might not like. Unite is Unity and apparently not that great, but it seems to be the first one to get actual updates. The others, you got what they released, perhaps some resource packs, and that's it.

Right? I bought this one like 10 years ago...played with it a bit, and then eventually moved onto Unity.
VX Ace is the last one I bought. It’s okay. I didn’t like the chibi art style switch from XP and they dropped manual layer positioning for the level editor. It’s a mixed bag, but still fun. My joy with it peaked with XP, but that might be nostalgia.
I really should not do this to myself when I barely understand the SRPG studio engine, but could be useful for making mods later down the line.

Any RPG maker that's not MV is pretty out dated at this point. MV supports actual cross platform development, while most of the older versions only work with Windows.
Oh. Only one is free, and it is older then RPGMaker MV which I used? And already had its issues? ehhh
That being said, even if you have higher goals as a game developer (like me and Godot), RPGMaker IS good to test story pacing, writing, character interactions, and to understand basic videogame development logic.
I bet they generate those keys by max example 10,000 copies. I wonder who in charge as vary to people doing this.

Why using limittng RPG Maker VX Ace with it's limiting ruby language when you can get FULL FLEDGED Unity or Unreal with it's lively C# or C++?
If RPG Maker’s feature set out of the box has 99% of what you need, you will save a lot of time
if you have to hack in a bunch of new functionality tho id argue for a more generalised engine at that point
Do you mean RPG Maker Unite? I'm still trying to figure out how their DRM works (does the official one apply to both Unreal and Unity engines?) and if they're worth the money for making personal tools for playing Fabula Ultima TTRPG.
@telldo8016 umm no 😅, I mean the real RPG Maker series, that includes XP, VX, VX Ace, MV, and MZ. I don't know about RPG Maker unite tho, haven't try it yet, but from the review looks like RPG Maker series has better performance than RPG Maker Unite.

vx ace works on a lot of low spec devices like android and the playstation classic thanks to this project called mkxp-z

As someone who has "RPG Maker" tag blocked on Steam by default, sure, I'll add free RPG Maker, I got the last one too.
I have nothing against free stuff.
RPG MAKER sucks. When you by the DLCs you have to figure out how to install them. Instead of a simple installer they make it difficult. Do not buy, or even waste your time with it.
