In India most of the familiess have their own washing machines. community laundry machine is not there . But still daily clothes are often washed by hand by whoever's clothes it is cz using washing machine daily can cause huge electricity bill n also clothes tend to look worn out if washed daily by washing machine. Washing machine is mainly for bedsheets, jeans trousers ,outside clothes etc

The iron and coal is in the old days, the iron was made of solid iron with the top with handle opens to fill it with burning coal which would make the iron hot and then used. Iron without electricity. 😁

Earlier, the irons were made of Iron(fe) and people used to heat it up in coal fire on ovens ........ it was super heavy and altogether a scary process. Even till now you can find those irons at few places in India.

About that iron thing. Earlier the irons run on coal. It was bigger in the size as compared to the modern irons, it had a compartment just above the base plate and ignited coal was put into that, which makes the base hot and ironing was done. People use to fan that coal occasionally to remove the ashes. Even now a days the people who do the ironing job uses such irons. So this was the transition from coal to electricity, he was talking about.

we have so much sunlight that electric dryers are a waste of electricity. most households in the cities have washing machine but still doesnt mean that all the clothes would be washed in the washing machine as people wash expensive clothes/ undergarments by hands. also a lot of households have domestic help and they would wash cloths by hand. also traditionally there is a caste called dhobi's who were the cloth washers and some places still have dhobis who still practice the profession

In India, we all have a washing machine. Every basic even a lower middle class one, will have one.
    Even if not fully automatic.
Now, we would load it up and wash. Usually, not for last night's under garments. Unless a bachelor life would pile two days or so. Proper households wash their under garments, night wear EVERY SINGLE DAY.

The coal to electric is the iron. First they used to put hot coals in a box and used it to iron clothes. Then the next upgrade to coal iron was electric iron, heats up because of electricity.

nowdays irons work on electricity, but there was a time when hot coal was put inside a metal iron which in turn used to heat up the iron plate, then the clothes were ironed. disadvantage was that they had to change the coal again and again

In India, when people wash clothes with hands, we firstly soak the clothes in detergent solution for about 30 min, then use a detergent soap (idk if you guys have them or not; you can google Rin detergent soap for an example) to clean them by any physical means possible, preferably involving the hard bathroom floor or a hard brush. It's not pretty...

  • @csgollum

There are many different ways in which clothes are typically washed in India.
    1. Washing machine (washing only, washer/dryer, etc.)
    2. Giving it to a dhobi (professional washer of clothes). However, this is kinda costly, obviously.
    3. Washing it by hand. This involves soaking the clothes for 30 minutes to an hour in a mix of water and washing powder, using a brush on the places that are visibly dirty, and then hanging them out to dry (on the balcony or on the terrace, if you have one, or on an in-house clothesline) with 2-3 clips per article of clothing.

    1. We can never be convinced that our clothes are dried unless it's hanging outside in front of the sun.
    2. 3 clips for that extra strong monsoon winds that just won't leave your clothes alone.
    3. Before the electricity revolution started we had iron boxes which could be filled with charcoal.
    4. Indian wardrobe:-
Must wash by hand category: 55% Color leaking cotton clothes, 5% Embroidered Sequined Suit, 25% black and white coloured various cloth articles, 5% branded T-shirts. 5% Undies
Can wash anyway you like: 5% Other random western styled casuals & JEANS!!

In India we have sunlight through the year, so we can dry our clothes out in the Sun. Also, I found that American/Canadian washing machines, dyers and refrigerators are like these sturdy giant things! They are so durable! I did not find the same here... We need to replace our machines way more often than the West. And lastly, the clothes that are commonly got in the US do not run colour! That's such a common problem with clothes in India... We literally cannot just toss it into the machine and know it's going to be ok 😑
