Grundy is the perfect bad guy. He can be fierce and dangerous, or meek and vulnerable. He's not driven by a lust for power or money. He doesn't care about politics or nations. He has enough magic that the idea of him fighting Superman AND Batman, and both giving him a good fight, is believable. The writers also don't have to worry about killing him off because coming back is built into his story.
His stats change randomly when he's resurrected so he can be big and strong enough to hurt Superman or well-spoken and meek. His memories can be completely gone or he can remember every instance of his lives. I will say that Cyrus Gold IS a greedy criminal with no problem killing people which is why his intelligent forms usually lean toward being evil (and angry at dying all those times)
It's crazy that he was written to be out of time in the 40's, I think this is why he has this extremely old era vibe like from the classic horror as vampire, dracula and wolfmen

Batman is able to reason with him to give the criminal to him, promising Grundy he'll make sure he stays out and never comes back to his home - sealing the deal with a promise for him to be left alone. At the end of Part One of the Two Parts (Story was split into two movies), Batman even brings Grundy a plate of food for him to eat, to which he happily takes with him whilst Bats stands out of sight to make sure he's able to get it. This is such a watered down version of Grundy I cringed at this video, he can literally take blows from Superman and still fight back. During that first fight scene I was expecting at least a “Grundy crush you!” or something but got nothing but grunts and growls.
