I like how all the horror is kept to the bedroom without this scene. You get a sense of safety in the downstairs rooms of the house, a place where the adult characters can regroup after moments of crisis to discuss what to do about the evil that's going on upstairs. The suspense and terror becomes that much greater in the anticipation of what we will witness the next time we venture up those stairs, down that hallway and into that bedroom. However, the spiderwalk scene did work in the book for whatever reason.
+Scott MacKeen I agree. I haven't read the book (yet) but I know how the scene is portrayed in the book and to me it sounds much more creepy for her to follow her mom around the house quietly like that. Haven't it been for that part in the book I would have preferred the movie without it. The downstairs is kind of like the "break" where the adults discuss the problem and I was always curious, excited and really nervous to see what would happen next time when they entered the room upstairs. For her to all of a sudden run down the stairs seemed a bit pointless except that it was a bit creepy. It does kind of show that no place is safe though, but like you said it's more effective when all the horror is happening in the bedroom.
These scenes may not seem scary now, but when I saw it in 1973 people in the theater were screaming, crying, fainting. It was a cultural phenomenon because we'd never heard of exorcism or seen such horror in a mainstream movie. Update: I noticed that some commenters are having an psychotic meltdown about the spider-walk scene. Indeed, in 1973, I did NOT see this scene because it wasn’t in the movie then. My point was that I saw the film before it became a cultural phenomenon. My error. I hope the people who freaked out have gotten over their trauma.
agus2006 That's true - the spider walk was not in the original movie. But everything else was, and as I said, it was a horrifying phenomenon that gives me the creeps all these decades later. Thanks for reminding me about the spider walk.
If they somehow figured out a way to make the strings invisible and included this scene in the original release. We'd might be discussing it as the single scariest scene in film history. It's a crime they didn't figure something out.
hagglefaen 1. You didn't see it in the theater, 2. You didn't see it in the theater in the context of the full movie, and 3. You didn't see it in the theater in the context of the full movie at the time it was released.
it's not only the wires. The fact that the pyjamas don't fall according to gravity is weird enough and they would have to come up with something for this as well.
I could not agree more. This is not a movie to go see with friends and talk through the whole thing. You need to really watch it. it doesn't affect you then, but this movie really plays with your mind well after you've seen it. I have not found another film that does that yet.
I get that a lot of people think that the spider walk scene kind of fucks up the notion that all of the demonic activity is behind Regan’s door, but it’s actually not. She plays with the ouiji board in the basement, she urinates in the living room, and the clay statue she made is found outside by the foot of the stairs. I think the original spider walk scene, score and brightness and all, is genuinely terrifying. The way she just moves more slowly down the stairs so we can really take in how contorted her body is, and the way she flicks her serpent tongue and darts after Sharon is creepy as hell. I really hate the 2000 edit, it feels so separate in tone from the rest of the film. It occurs before the crucifix masturbation scene, so it kind of dims that shock, already seeing her mouth gushing with blood. The original (as it was also written in the book) is unsettling, whereas the obvious CGI edit, which looks more noticeable to me than the wires, is too outlandish at that point in the film. My two cents ;p
Stuff like this ALWAYS freak me out. Hell, I can't even walk down the hallway at night without looking over my shoulder or speed-walking. The Exorcist will always be the number one scariest film in movie history.
Reading a lot of negative comments here about The Exorcist NOT being scary. First off I had to watch a laserdisc to VHS copy due to censorship about 1994. The quality was not that good and I was about 18 when I first watched it. It bored me to be honest. I was more into slasher movies at the time. Watched it a second time when I was in my early 20s and it scared the living crap out of me. Seriously, it made me uncomfortable for a couple of days. The Exorcist is a film like LSD or mushrooms - If you are in a bad place mentally at the time DO NOT go there.
Even though this was from the 70's its still scary To be honest they don't make movies scary like that.. Its not boring at all.. It still freaks me out!! To those who really think its boring.. If it does not bother you you have something wrong with you!
I absolutely agree. Maybe an older movie but very well done for its time. No modern day horror movie has touched the horror of this. And the older movies built you up and had by far more of a plot. That's what makes a horror movie is a build up.
I saw this movie last night.. as the name of the movie is Exorcist is utterly do justice with the content of movie. this is absolutely brilliant classical horror movie.. 👍👍 16/11/2020 Monday 08:24M
They were able not to show Superman's wires in Superman the movie 5 years later. I always wondered why Friedkin cut such a relevant scene. I can only imagine the audience's reaction to that scene back in 73. Lol
I agree. Up to the release of the Exorcist, all horror movies had become cliche. It was either some B movie about invaders from outer space, some mummy, Dracula or Frankenstein flick, some dinosaur or Japanese monster movie, or those Hammer films from Britain. What scared people so much was that it was so realistic and that this innocent little girl in a loving home had fallen prey to a force that all religions believe in, in one form or another and as such, this could happen to us too.
the thing is, when this was released, it took a humungous jump from scary movies before it, like nosferatu, the horror films we laugh at today. then out of nowhere this came out and people were fainting and shit. now there may be scarier movies but none had an impact on their time of release like this one from 35-years-ago
I used to watch this on repeat when I was younger, every day after school. But now I just get freaked out when I watch it. The Exorcist isn't scary, more like freaky.
I wasn't expecting this when I was watching the movie, and its the ONLY scene in a movie ever where I got the hairs standing up at the back of my neck. Just looks unnatural!
Why hasn't the "spider walk" caught on, like a meme or a cool thing for kids these days to do? Some people have done videos of themselves or friends doing the spider walk--and that's great--but it really should have caught on all over the country. Taylor Swift should be doing the spider walk in her music videos, and stuff like that.
The Exorcist is one of the most successful horror movies ever and many Asia countries watched this movie in 1973 yes the same things happened like screaming, fainting, crying , fleeing and kept ambulances busy. And other younger asians who never ever know this movie and I shared this movie to my friends. They said tht it shocked them alot and it was very shocking and good effect at that time of year 1973 , and may have nightmare after watching Exorcist. Because it is very real
I'm actually surprised that there was someone to wipe the actress' mouth after she was done, which is sorta shockingly nice when you think about how mean the filming process was.
