The ‘concerto for clarinet & orchestra’ (1996) is designed for a small orchesrta (l’ensemble Intercontemporain led by de Pierre Boulez created it : flute, 2 oboe (also 1 english horn), bassoon, horn, trumpetu trombone, tuba, 3 percussionnists, harp, piano, first and second violins, , viola, cello, contrabass), It is written so as to clearly listen the wholle soloist part. The hard point was that strings were often covererd by other instruments. Carter divided its work into six short sections, separated by a tutti , associating the clarinet to a subset of instrumrents having similar tones (the soloist physically comes closer of them on stage). Ech section has a characteristic rendering of its own, and gives and impulse ro short orchestral comments. The seventh and last section makes use of the whole orchersta, which is indeed a convincing 'finale'.
Tom Martin is just amazing-absolute clarity of tone through all those wide register leaps, a beautiful ringing sound-completely flawless execution of this extremely difficult contemporary piece. Tom is in a class by himself as a musician and clarinetist.

Crystalline---eerily beautiful!
Thomas Martin, wonderful playing!
Wonderful performance.
Impressive piece but I still like the Mozart better. I am an old guy and I like to sing along.
