    January Favorites:
    5 Stars: Will of the Many and A Christmas Carol
    4.75: Yumi and the Nightmare Painter
    4.5: The Night Circus, To the Lighthouse, and The River We Remember
    January Disappointments:
    3.75: Normal People (This one is complicated though. Like the book you mentioned in your video where the ending kind of brought it down, I really enjoyed this book until the end.)
    2.5: Becoming Mrs. Lewis
    I also read a couple of non-fiction books for book clubs that didn't really impress me that much. They were okay, but nothing special.

    Happy BookTubeVersary! I absolutely appreciated your thoughts on Onyx Storm. I haven’t read IF nor OS, but what you are discussing makes me feel better to know that people aren’t just blindly absolutely in love with the series despite how wildly popular it is. Happy BookTube anniversary! 😀 I’ve been quite intimidated by the Throne of Glass series but your reviews made me more excited to pick it up and also there were some helpful tips for what to expect, so thanks for that!! I’ve read two Alice Feeney books: Daisy Darker and Rock Paper Scissors. I enjoyed Rock Paper Scissors and Daisy Darker was just okay, but I would say her writing isn’t amazing, mostly just atmospheric, twisty, and dramatic. I loved Yellowface and hated June 😂 I’m going into Onyx Storm with pretty low expectations so hopefully that will help haha. My favorites in January were Hello Beautiful, The Wedding People, and An Ember in the Ashes!

    I agree with your star rating for Onyx Storm - that's pretty much where I stand between a 3.5-3.75. However, I have to say two things. Having read both Fourth Wing and Iron Flame in January back to back right before starting Onyx Storm, I do not think a re-read of Iron Flame would have helped. I was so lost in OS for the first 1/3 of the book and even throughout. You put into words what I couldn't seem to figure out but it was the start/stop up/down pacing that killed this book for me. I actually liked our main characters BETTER in Iron Flame than in Onyx Storm - their relationship annoyed me to the CORE in this 3rd book. Maybe our MMC was just a bit TOO angsty for me. I am sorely disappointed in this series and do not have high hopes going forward because I am not sure the author has been able to hash out the story as well as she "says" she has for a 5 book series. We'll see I suppose. I'm bummed because I was completely taken with Fourth Wing. Loved it. I even loved Iron Flame - I was surprised as I read it to hear how many people didn't like it. This one though...yuck. I felt so bored and it took me nearly 2 weeks to read because I had no desire to pick it back up when I was reading and felt like I couldn't read anything else until I finished it. Finally, finally I got through it, I just felt so disappointed. That ending. Good grief. I feel like the author is pulling out cliff hangers for the sake of cliff hangers. I don't think it's absolutely necessary to end on a major cliff hanger every single time in order to have people wanting to continue to read your books...anyway...haha think you for letting me vent a bit!

    If it makes you feel better, I reread Iron Flame before reading Onyx Storm. There were so many new characters, and places introduced that I had no idea what was going on for about 200 pages. It got so much better around page 300, which is sort of a bummer.

    Happy booktube anniversary! I've never read Yellowface, but from what you said about it, it reminds me a lot about a show I watched last year on Netflix called Ripley. If you watch it, you should ask your husband to watch it with you. Ripley is absolutely thrilling and gorgeously cinematic. Just like Yellowface, Ripley employs the fraudulent main character story line, with plenty of crimes committed along the way.

    • @olivesbooknook
      @olivesbooknook  6 дней назад

      yeah pacing was definitely weird. i am holding out some hope though, cause i feel like pacing in a lot of MIDDLE books is weird if it's a longer series. so i'm really hoping books 4 and 5 tighten up a bit. (could be unwarranted hope though lol)

    For what it's worth I read Fourth Wing, Iron Flame and Onyx Storm back to back and I couldn't finish Onyx Storm even knowing everything that happens in the Iron Flame. In fact I think reading Onyx Storm so close to Iron Flame made it worse because I hated Iron Flame and I literally groaned when my library hold for Onyx Storm came in. I'm giving up on the whole series now, but I didn't love Fourth Wing (I gave it 3/5 stars) so I don't really care overall.

    Fourth Wing, Iron Flame and Onyx Storm were all ⭐️⭐️⭐️ books for me. I like many of the story lines and I love the dragons, but the characters are so angsty and act like they’re in high school, instead of in their twenties. Also, the spice level was too high for me and it got so repetitive. I know the author first envisioned a trilogy for these books and I am going to stick with her original intent. I have read three books and I am done.

    Alice Feeney definitely uses the same reveals and first person unreliable narrator in all her books. I’d say if you don’t like the writing style I’d stay away from all of them because she uses the same formula for most all of them. I feel like you either love it or hate it :/ I read rock paper scissors and rated it highly because of the depth of the characters and the real life connections and emotions it portrayed but the twists left much to be desired in the same style as Beautiful Ugly..
