My son had been experiencing overheating. We checked the horn, it worked. We swapped the relays and the horn didn't work. so the fan relay was bad. replaced it and the temps have stayed down.
Let me ask you a question. Before I’ll tell you the issue. My car takes long to start, and when it starts it sounds like going on and off. There’s a lot of people going though the radiator hose, it’s packed with air pressure, and the car starts blowing stons of white smoke. In Drive it goes slowly cause reverse you have to amost have the pedal to floor to move it a little. How do I know if the heads are blown ?
Usually white smoke from the exhaust means there a coolant leak into the engine. To test for a head gasket leak open the oil fill cap and if it’s a brownish yellow milky substance that will indicate you have a head gasket leak. Good luck 👍🏻
I like when I see these videos where the engine compartment looks as weathered as mine =D. Thanks for the video I really appreciate it. I really like learning about vehicles I buy even if Im not needing to fix it atm. Just bought an 05 thats in pretty good shape for NY car. Going to need brake lines soon debating if I want to try it or take it to a mechanic (they're pretty rotted)
I found the reason my honda civic was overheating. After checking everything else, it turned out to be dirt on the bottom of my overflow reservoir being dirty and blocked the hose to the radiater. Problem solved. Would have saved me a fortune in money and time. Check that first.
Thanks I really appreciate your help. I checked all relays and I changed the temperature switch and the thermostat. And still it doesn’t turn the fans. What can be. Any recommendations? Thanks.
If you tried the paper clip and they went on. I would make sure the thermostat isn’t defective. Oh make sure you have the correct temp switch for that model. There are a few different ones that will fit but not communicate. Remember the temp has to rise considerably before they operate. And it wouldn’t be a bad thing to just check the wiring to make sure there are no loose connections. Good luck.
Thanks the switch that’s the one auto part give me I mach and looks the same. I check all the connections. Looks good. And I let run for a while up to 185f And the fans it doesn’t turn on. 😮💨
@@maximobautista4854 the first sensor I picked up, looked like it was the same one and it did fit, but there was actually a different model number for my particular engine. Make sure
Just change my thermostat/ radiator cap and / sensor switch and my car is still overheating it only over heats when I’m driving in the freeways for a long time , I did notice coolant overflowing in the coolant resovor
@@alanramirez1049 check hoses, radiator for any signs of leaks. Some hoses have to heat up before they leak usually near the clamps. Also check water pump for leaks then poss blown gasket. Check oil dip stick if milky white in oil thats a sign of a blown gasket or bubbles in the radiator or reservoir overflow. Good luck
Thank you for the video. If you could tell me the part number of the radiator cap with the relief valve I would appreciate it. My 2004 Honda with 223k miles had a bad thermostat. I would like to say the OEM thermostat I bought had 78C stamped into it. 78C is close to 178 F. After changing it and purging the system the ODB-II reported 180 degrees F as I took a long test drive. If you are moving the electric fans are not required, if the thermostat which controls/regulates heat and flow fails then there's different issue. Thanks Again take care.
What if only one fan is turning on? If your looking at the front of the car, the left one is not coming on. At first neither was coming on so I replace the same sensor & only one of them came on.
The drivers side is the AC condenser fan the passenger side is the main cooling fan. Turn both on by running engine and turning on AC. If only one comes on get some type of object and tap the motor to the fan not working. If it comes on you most likely will need a new fan motor. If not check the wiring connections. Then check the fuses associated with the fan not working. And obviously checking to see if the sensors are good.
My 2005 honda civic just started over heating only when I'm on the freeway my check engine light has been on they said I need to replace my oxygen sensor and 2 cylinders can that be a reason why? Also I just fixed my head gasket a couple months ago not sure whats causing it to overheat
I dont get it. My 2002 turned my fans on w the ac. Without doing the paperclip trick & they both turned on. Wouldn't that mean the sensor is good? & since you said your fans were running even before the paper clip trick. What is the point of the paperclip? Im prerty sure mine is water pump. Cause my belt was squeeking mostly when I turn ac on..before I changed the radiator h thermostat. Thanks for taking the time to respond back to each of us. It .akes me want to share your page more
Also. My hose are both warm relay good. & for about a year the heat takes a bit to warm up & the ac takes a bit to cool...so..yeah probably my water pump. Since it would make no sense for a heater core to cause overheating right?
If your squeaking when you turn on your ax you have a loose belt. Try that first it happened to mine after the alternator was changed out and the belt wasn’t tightened up properly
@@HighRidgeHandyman thanks. But I changed both belts & thermostat a mo th ago no more squeek. Radiator 3 weeks ago w hoses & cap. Fans both work. I guess my question was worded wrong. Since I couldn't squeeze that clip off the sensor. I just turned the ac on & they both ran so I never tested the sensor. Would it fail to turn on after the higher temp. Or should I jist go & change the water pump h all the fixings inside. It doesn't seem like the head gasket has failed. But. I he as rd it was easy to do on civic..
Your right👍🏻 One for AC the other to cool engine. With larger engines they have a dual fan system so if it gets extremely hair both will come on the cool the engine.
Good morning, I have a Honda Civic 2003, that the radiator and hoses were changed last December 2022, 3 weeks ago the coolant reservoir cap blew on it, repair shop said they put a sealant on the fluid and tested everything and should be fine after a week same thing happened. Now they are saying its the head gasket needs to be done( That's a lot of money), but my oil is dark as hell not any sign of coolant/water in it. So I bought it home for now. I already did checked the fuse and fans with a pin myself and they are working. What would be my next step? Thanks
Sounds like your pressure is building and unable to release so it finds its way to the reservoir cap. Try changing the actual radiator cap, I would also change the thermostat. See if that helps before changing the head gasket. Good luck
D16V1 cooling problem is known! The point is that the expansion tank should be filled to the maximum level when the engine is warm, and the radiator should be filled to the maximum level as well. If there is still air in the system, the car should be parked on a sloping driveway with the front facing upwards. With a warm engine, idle the car and turn the heat to maximum and set the internal air circulation to on. Remove the radiator cap and wait until all the air comes out through the radiator. When no more air is visible coming out of the radiator, the engine speed can be increased to 1500-2000 rpm. This further circulates the water and more air will come out of the system at this point. As air comes out of the system, the radiator should be continuously refilled. After this process, there should be no more problems. Every mechanic told me that my car had a blown head gasket, this was 6 years ago, and there has been no problem to this day! I hope I was able to help...
@High Ridge Handyman I'm starting to have a problem with my 01 Honda civic its overheating and the car start to shake as well I'm not sure what wrong with it and plus when its does only go 20 mph
I had my radiator fixed on my 2004 Honda Civic because the car overheated when the heater was on. worked, now it's happening again. brought it to a mechanic and he couldn't find anything wrong. Did the "bubble test". If I keep the heater off,it doesn't overheat. Could it still be the radiator, or something else?
@@LindaStamberger I was able to fix the problem of the engine over heating . The issue was that , behind where the anti freeze coolant goes . There was a line disconnected . So all the antifreeze would escape
My problem is after a long drive it overheats only being parked up. The top hose is warm if I was to squeeze I can, lower hose is hot. Fans work n all. It overheats when it wants too. Is it a thermostat? My fans go on n off so I don’t think it’s the switch. I had a bad thermostat b4 n it would do the same except that when I would accelerate it would overheat(hence no air flow) so I’m stuck for real
I think it’s thermostat I’m getting mine fixed my car does the exact same especially when the car is idle and idk this car makes me nervous when I’m in a stop light or traffic sometimes gotta turn off the car, it always goes down when I step on the gas it’s weird
I have a 05 Honda civic ex. It was doing same thing as yours. I'll tell you what I did to fix my problem. Drain coolant and stick water hose insides the radiator and radiator hoses. Once you flush it out and drain it. Put everything back together and fill radiator with white vinegar and turn on your car with heater on for about 20 min or so. More likely you have a motor or heater core blockage. Drain everything out and refill with coolant and you will be surprised it won't get hot.
Paper clip turned the driver side fan on. Replaced sensor and the fan won't kick on. The passenger side fan never kicked on with the clip in and AC on. Any suggestions?
I have a question about the radiator. I had mine changed few days ago and I noticed that it has a smaller hole right under the radiator cap. Is that for pressure release or is it the wrong radiator that was put on? I don’t know if it’s supposed to have that hole or not. I also changed the thermostat, radiator cap and hoses and car is still steaming and loosing coolant.
I have this problem, My 95' Civic overheats when it is regulating, when I am on the highway it does not overheat. I have already changed the temperature sensor on the dashboard, cleaned the radiator and changed the thermostat. What else could it be?
The reason your civic is not overheating when you are driving on the highway is because the air is passing through the engine keeping it cool. But when you’re idle or driving around town and not getting a lot of airflow it will overheat possibly due to faulty fans. You have to check your radiator fans to make sure they’re operating properly.
Make sure your fans are working and they come one. Also check the thermostat to make sure it’s operating correctly make sure both top and bottom hoses are warm. It could be something when the system is pressurized like a head gasket or cracked block or water pump. Just go threw the process. Good luck be safe👍🏻
Drain coolant. Stick water hose inside radiator and radiator hoses. Fill radiator with white vinegar and run car for about 20 min with heater on. Drain white vinegar and flush again with water hose and then refill with coolant. More likely your heater core or motor has a blockage. I know it sounds crazy but it fixed the same problem you were having.
Thee relays arent. Bad the fan 5:38 s. Come on by themselves and they def come on with the heat and. A/c switch. It drives fine for hours but goes through coolant .... it starts to over heat after long peeriods driving through downn
Check for faulty thermostat or water pump. Also check the fan switch or any clogs in radiator. On idle have cap open to see if any coolant flow. If no flow then the thermostat is stuck closed. Good luck be safe. Work at your own risk or hire a professional if your not comfortable doing it👍🏻
My civic overheats after a long run . Thermostat is good, relays and all that good too. I replaced the cooling system sensor as well and still overheating.. Anything else I could check?
I'm having same problem on my 2005 Honda civic ex. Sick and tired of this overheating!! Replaced thermostat and radiator. The heater goes from hot to cold and then it starts overheating after a long drive
@@dbagginz-7147 more likely leaking head gasket or something thats mixing in with my coolant, it runs good for about 500 miles or so and then it starts acting up a lil with temperature Guage and when I check the radiator cap I noticed some sludge build up in my thermostat and thermostat housing so I basically just been flushing out my coolant system with water hose about every 500 miles or whenever I notice something is up. But overall it hasn't been to bad lately. I'll probably be changing gasket in the head to stop it from leaking.
My civic car 2005 first start and run almost 3-4 minutes (not up 40 km) and when i slow the car then not speed up. The car not accelerate but rpm goes up when I restarting again car and car run 3-4 minutes (40 km). My transmission already changed. Help me.(give me this problem solution)
Check the fuse, if that’s ok put battery and ground to the fans to see if they come on. If not could be bad wire or fan altogether. Good luck be safe. If not sure how to always hire a professional 👍🏻
I changed my thermostat and flushed my radiator system but once I went over 60mph it started to overheat again , and when at running temp the coolant bumbles
Check the new thermostat. Make sure it’s the same size as the orig. some replacements are smaller. Also check radiator cap to make sure it’s operating properly. Check oil if you see white foam then you have a head gasket leak. Good luck
@@craiglewis8454I took it to the shop and they got all the bubbles out , after that that’s when I thought the car was fine but then, once I went over 60 it overheated again…
I don’t know if my car is overheating or not. Basically i started seeing steam coming out of the front right side when i was sitting at lights. But my temperature gauge has never gone above the mid point. I would pop the hood and noticed that the steam plumes out more when i added throttle. I am also losing tons of coolant if I don’t check on it every so often the reservoir will be empty. I’m suspecting the radiator because it has a layer of coolant all around it and today i started leaking coolant from the lower radiator hose area. Could it be a head gasket? I don’t know what it is
Could be the actual hose or clamp. Check where the clamp meets the hose. When your pressure builds having a pin hole could eventually leak. Check both hoses. Good luck
@@HighRidgeHandyman I’m definitely going to check it soon. I think it’s the hose that connects to the bottom of the reservoir because that’s coincidentally where the splashguard is always wet. Hopefully it’s something simple. Thanks for the help!
@@edgarzavala8416 (for you and also for anyone reading) You’re correct to look to where there is moisture that you can see. However, think.. that splash guard covers a large area, underneath the car, too. Above it, are various coolant hoses, clamps, the thermostat housing, coolant sensor with a damaged or missing o-ring, overflow reservoir upper/lower hoses (to name a few ). that could be leaking, on that side. Ya know? * Edgar, I’m hopeful by now, that you’ve found and fixed the issue. If so, good. Let others know in a follow up comment, if that was the issue and/or if it wasn’t, what was and how you fixed it!? Just my 2¢.
I replaced sensor and it didn’t fix it for me so I replaced thermostat and gasket and coolant now it’s better but it’s starting to act up again hand on face. 🤦🏽♂️ I’m probably going to try to remove as much air in the system as I can and see what happens and try some troubleshooting.
Got a problem with my civic. Just replaced the radiator, hoses, fans, fans switch, thermostat, and temperature sensor. But it overheats when it’s parked and it’s on C when I’m driving it.
Check reservoir coolant cap and radiator coolant cap. Coolant tends to leak thru the reservoir cap (been changing it for years) causing it to heat up, also check lines for leaks, but most likely it could be head gasket.
@@yen1691 😂 never really noticed it until you called me out on it, bro that’s a good one. I actually washed it since then, but yeah it was loaded with a lot of dirt and dust and everything else.
Could be your radiator cap pressure valve stuck open. Change out the radiator cap with the proper model number for your vehicle. Find one in the middle price range💪🏻
me and my friend replaced everything from the video in my car and it’ll be fine but after a while it’ll over heat again. i’m pretty we’ve run out of parts to replace that could cause overheating, instead i’ve had to burp the coolant system everytime it starts to overheat again
Do you have any white smoke coming from the tailpipe? If so it could be a blown head gasket. If not do a pressure test to see if you have a hair line crack in one of the hoses. Also check the cap even new ones can be defective. Good luck
Did you test the fans by bypassing the sensor? If so make sure it’s the right sensor for the make and year. Also the temp has to reach high temp to trip the fans on. Other way to test fans put on your ac and see if that operate . Good luck be safe. If your unsure HIRE A PROFESSIONAL.👍🏻
There are two fans, one is ac fan and the other is radiator. Leave the ac off and let car sit for about 15 min and see if it comes on, try driving around and see if it reaches certain temperature to see if they come on after you let car idle. If they don't their is a fan switch that has a wire hooked to it, its in front of the fans. It cost like 20 bucks to replace that might be your issue before you start thinking it's the main fan having a issue.
Ours I think is heater core I'm a mechanic and I live Hondas but I didn't know these have so many problems it runs and drives great but runs hot at idle and the heat goes away coolant staying clean so is the oil when I bought it oil was dirty but not milkshake. I think heater core is clogged heat fades when we stop and temp rises but down h9ghway heat is hot and with heat off it still stays where it's suppose too
@swaveman9434 if you have a scanner (even those $15 ones will give you data) it will give you a more accurate temp. At 184f temp holds for sometime and you will notice that bottom hose gets warmer. At 204f fans should kick on and bring the temp down and turn back on at 204f again.
Check both hoses to make sure warm fluid is flowing to make sure thermostat is operating properly. Then check the fans to make sure they work. Then check the cooling sensor. If all good check head gaskets for leak

I really like learning about vehicles I buy even if Im not needing to fix it atm. Just bought an 05 thats in pretty good shape for NY car. Going to need brake lines soon debating if I want to try it or take it to a mechanic (they're pretty rotted)
I’ll try anything as long as it’s not life threatening 💪🏻💪🏻 Good luck and thanks for your comment
Looks good.
And I let run for a while up to 185f

I have a 2004 Honda civic it continues to over heat and I constantly have to be putting coolant. Is this a blown gasket ?

Did you ever figure out the issue? I’m dealing with the exact same problem. Even fixed the head gasket a couple months ago
I just fixed mine the reservoir cap didnt seal all the way so it would lose coolant at high temps
Did u replace the cap or the reservoir or both?

Is was for me. Good luck with it Daniel👍🏻
Do both fans have to work simultaneously I thought one was for cooling?
Your right👍🏻 One for AC the other to cool engine. With larger engines they have a dual fan system so if it gets extremely hair both will come on the cool the engine.
@@HighRidgeHandyman just wondering because when I did the paperclip with the power on engine off ac button on only the driver side fan came on.
Good luck
@@HighRidgeHandyman , even if radiator cap with the radiator itself is 2 brand new?
And also the thermostat was replaced that time when the radiator was replaced.

It could be the water pump going bad or check for any clogs in the coolant hoses. Good luck be careful. If your unsure hire an Experienced mechanic 👍🏻
Civics run a little rough when low on coolant. Check coolant hoses and caps (especially reservoir!) For leaks.

My 05 civic lx overheats when parked but cools down when giving gas, any input?
I have a 05 Honda civic ex. It was doing same thing as yours. I'll tell you what I did to fix my problem. Drain coolant and stick water hose insides the radiator and radiator hoses. Once you flush it out and drain it. Put everything back together and fill radiator with white vinegar and turn on your car with heater on for about 20 min or so. More likely you have a motor or heater core blockage. Drain everything out and refill with coolant and you will be surprised it won't get hot.
Fans aren't turning on causing car to overheat when not running.
I have 2005 Honda civic 3 days ago it started screeching when I turn engine on and today it over heated after 1hr 30 min drive. What do you suggest
Possibly Bad bearings, loose belt or worn belt, water pump.
Paper clip turned the driver side fan on. Replaced sensor and the fan won't kick on. The passenger side fan never kicked on with the clip in and AC on. Any suggestions?
Check the relay, check fir blown fuse, check the wiring for an open wire. Also make sure you got the right sensor. 👍🏻
Check Relay, fans and sensors. I had same issue before. LOW COOLANT CAN GIVE FAULTY TEMP READINGS,, CAUSING FANS NOT TO TURN ON
According to all the info you provided my next step would be to replace the passenger side fan.
I kept losing coolant for some reason, but when pressure tested, no visible leaks. I ended up having to pay for a head gasket replacement.
I’m surprised they didn’t see that in the pressure testing. Hope it lasts a long time for you👍🏻
How much was the gasket?
I have a question about the radiator. I had mine changed few days ago and I noticed that it has a smaller hole right under the radiator cap. Is that for pressure release or is it the wrong radiator that was put on? I don’t know if it’s supposed to have that hole or not. I also changed the thermostat, radiator cap and hoses and car is still steaming and loosing coolant.
Same!!
I have a 2004 Honda civic dx what is both hoses are hot does that mean my thermostat is working or not
Is it okay to run the fans with paper clip on? Without changing the sensor? I went to the shop and I don't find the sensor!
Order it online dude
I have this problem, My 95' Civic overheats when it is regulating, when I am on the highway it does not overheat. I have already changed the temperature sensor on the dashboard, cleaned the radiator and changed the thermostat. What else could it be?
The reason your civic is not overheating when you are driving on the highway is because the air is passing through the engine keeping it cool. But when you’re idle or driving around town and not getting a lot of airflow it will overheat possibly due to faulty fans. You have to check your radiator fans to make sure they’re operating properly.
My 04 civic only overheats while driving but at a idle it cools back down , any suggestions?
Do you by any chance know what the part number for that coolant sensor switch

Hi there ive a honda civic 1997
It overheats and the fan turns on for dew seconds maybe up to 1 min then turns off
My civic overheats on idle what are the areas to check. I just rebuilt the engine too.

Burp the coolant system easy to do might be the issue
I’m probably going to try to remove as much air in the system as I can and see what happens and try some troubleshooting.
And if all is working okay. It might be a weak fuel pump if it has over a 100,000 miles on it.
Got a problem with my civic. Just replaced the radiator, hoses, fans, fans switch, thermostat, and temperature sensor. But it overheats when it’s parked and it’s on C when I’m driving it.
Most likely bad head gasket
Check reservoir coolant cap and radiator coolant cap. Coolant tends to leak thru the reservoir cap (been changing it for years) causing it to heat up, also check lines for leaks, but most likely it could be head gasket.

What does it mean if my fan doesn’t work at all?
There are two fans, one is ac fan and the other is radiator. Leave the ac off and let car sit for about 15 min and see if it comes on, try driving around and see if it reaches certain temperature to see if they come on after you let car idle. If they don't their is a fan switch that has a wire hooked to it, its in front of the fans. how can you tell
@swaveman9434 if you have a scanner (even those $15 ones will give you data) it will give you a more accurate temp. At 184f temp holds for sometime and you will notice that bottom hose gets warmer. At 204f fans should kick on and bring the temp down and turn back on at 204f again.
