It was this video that made me realize something. No one dances like Ian. I instantly knew it was him out of my love for Don Cab. Still going strong and staying brilliant, I see. Bro, everyone is this band is fucking amazing. 10/10
when genetic modification becomes a thing you bet your ass John's gonna grow four more limbs so he can control all the pedals and pads his heart truly desires
@@AjDouble0games He once explained, it's a joke he sticks to. They almost never used it initially but he had it with him so he positioned it to a place, where it is almost impossible to reach. As you can see, now they actually use it from time to time...
John Stainer is probably the best drummer I have ever seen live. He plays like he wants to rip through those drums but does it in such a clean and precise manner! Amazing drummer!
I’ll probably always prefer 3/4 or 6/8 because of the enormous amount of freedom it grants rhythmically but 5/4 is a goodass meme that doesn’t get used enough
This song is great! I really like the last loop the band plays too, but with more listening, I found the riff to be played earlier in the song. Mind = blown. Dave plays a riff starting at 3:20 that mixes into the song really well. The riff continues to play alone on a loop, with cut EQ, to start the breakdown. Dave increases the speed at which the riff is played at, at 4:11, which makes the riff an octave higher and turns it from 12/4 into 6/4. Definitely looking forward to the new album!
+Travis Madsen yeah dog. real genius move on their part. also interesting is the part starting at 2:29 where they slowly add more notes to the riff each time they repeat the measure. live looping ftw!
This band always surprises me with something new!!! To be honest when I first heard this band, I thought it was weird, but later on, I realized that they are the shiznit!!!
You can immediately hear that is one of the greatest intros of all time. Not just because of how uncommon it is but also because of how it is played live. You can see Ian Williams really focused on the frequency of the sound and get a glipse at John Stanier when he's like, "When are we getting this party started?"
RUclips ai never fails to lead me to new favourite music. I fail to understand how this is a jam session. The Mouse on Mars is strong with these ones. I'd label this Desert Kraut Rock, but Desert- and Kraut-Rock always had some quirks for me. This tune is precise as a diamond cutter and starting at 2:29 it's grooving non-stop. Battles is on my must-listen-list now. And...btw...the last helmet album is also incredible. Stevenson is a worthy successor to Stanier, but with the latter it would've been their best album.
Is it just me or does this live version sound a lot better than the studio recorded version? I feel like the keys/guitars sound a lot better on the live version and the drums sound more alive on this version as well.
+Harte Craft It does. It really, really does. But what it really is is the ending to the studio version falls totally flat when compared to the ending of this one. You also have to keep in mind that the leak is very shitty sounding. It will sound super crisp when a good leak comes out.
+DeadODST i respectfully disagree, i think there's a lot of reverb here that makes it sound dirty and crowded. what i love about the studio version is the super clean production and the deep, deep bass, but that's what this one is lacking, even if performances are a bit more expressive
mastersoftoday You make a fair point but the actual music of this one (just the climax/ending) is sooo much better in my opinion that it almost negates all of that.
I saw the band back in 2006 and I've been drumming since I was eight I'm 40 now John is one of my most favorite drummers of all time I was a huge helmet fan and I got to meet him that night and I asked him how come you're only playing with one symbol and it's 11 ft high and he told me that I have to work harder to hit the symbol which emphasizes the beats and I always kind of took that as a weird situation but I was like hey man that's what you're doing that's great because your records are fantastic but I would never have an 11 foot crash symbol that sounds ridiculous but he actually was emphatic about it and they put on an amazing show I was very very amazed.
I was trying to find a video of a really old live show when they used to play in the middle of the floor surrounded by thr audience. One in particular where the crowds gets a bit crazy and things got a bit dicey. Now im not sure if i dreamed it all up. But this video will do in the meantime
What's the deal with the keyboard mounted vertically like that? I get practicality for also playing guitar but where do I get one and what is the rack called? Or did he just duct tape it like it looks?
In my opinion, The Battles are pretty much the modern day Can. I know those are really big shoes to fill but I've always thought they Mirrored(pun intended) Can in terms of sound, aspect, aesthetic, style, and everything. Battles is Can for millennials and everyone in between. And I mean all this as a complement. I think I love the Battles even more than Can honestly
Does anyone still come back to this specific video 5 years later?
I do for the incredible drumming and mix here. So perfectly captured
Yeah, this version of The Yabba always blows me away. I wish the studio version sounded as intense as the live.
yes i wish they would release the other songs they played from this set. they played like three more songs at least.
at least put them on youtube they played summer simmer if i remember correctly too
@@dominicpriest someone managed to get them up here ruclips.net/video/DF_dogZbUKI/видео.html

10/10
Ian is so fun to watch in both bands!
Can't remember the last time I was this hyped for a new album! These guys still blow me away!
You know it's a weird ass band when the drummer has the simplest setup out of all of them.
That doesn't make much sense, Ron.
when genetic modification becomes a thing you bet your ass John's gonna grow four more limbs so he can control all the pedals and pads his heart truly desires
John Stanier is such a killer drummer! Love that high ass cymbal.
Amazing to think that this is the same guy on Helmet's big hit Unsung
Why's is so high?
Sick!

Was never that into Battles. Strangely growing on me. Stanier is a monster.
5/4 is easily the best time signature.
I prefer 10/8
9outof10 very driving that’s for sure

Amazing camera work. Super excited for the new album!

This is just so fucking awesome. No one else makes music as exciting as they do.
Where has this band been all my life? Beyond amazing.

Thanks for pointing out that repeated riff I completely missed it. Just as I thought this song couldn't get much better
also, time signature changes and polyphonic guitars
can't get enough of this sound
Stunning. Never heard of this band before. That was awesome music!

so technical yet visceral at the same time. perhaps it's the presence of a real drummer.
Chris Williams so what is a none real drummer???
Akho Kezo Drum Machine
The drummer was from the highly influential alt metal/post-hardcore band Helmet.
So visceral-ness would be a key element for the band.
This is my first time ever listening to this band. Woww!!!
That beat at 2:28 is incredible. Love shit like that
I just discovered this after 5 years living in ignorance. What a masterpiece
Does that mean ur 5 years old

The camera work is gorgeous.
Not including the number of times I watched the stream on loop yesterday, I've already watched this 6 times now.
didn't think too much after my first listen, but NOW! This shit GROOVES
I'm an anachronistic fuck, raised on Queen and Zepplin, but this stuff is the greatest thing I've heard in decades
Can't stop watching this video. So pumped to finally see these guys play tonight!
I don't understand how you play with such precision. It's easy to tell this is acoustic acoustic art just by listening.
I think it's cool/unique how the drummer chooses to have his crash symbol up high. He's boss like that!
always a pleasure watching John Stanier in action!
This record is damn good. Glad I got to see them play on this tour.
God I love these fucking songs
This is the superior cut.
those hi hats sound soooo clean
2023 and still love coming back to this.
They've been endgame ever since the beginning. Fucking brilliant, the lot of them.
This is my best song of 2015!
I came from Helmet. Staying for a lifetime. Helmet was the drummer's former band.
i have now watched this video 100 times
don... caballero ...
this song is sooo nice, Good job on the Director David Raboy on this is one of the best edit I' have seen of a band playing live !!!
can't wait for the new album! love the video!
Stanier is by far one of the best drummers around
4 years on, but I still hope they'll release the rest of the videos from this set. :D
Would love to see these guys live.
John Stanier is seriously a god among drummers
Besides Michael Giles he's my top pick.
The way he works the hi-hat on this song gives me goosebumps every time.

Johhnnnn man
Unnnnghhh god it's so good.
Poor crash cymbal, can’t even get in frame because he’s so high in the atmosphere
