I have never owned an iPhone, but the iPhone 5 was one of my favorites The boxy design made me to fall in love with that, and I like the recent design changes by Apple
The iPhone 12 Mini is close enough to the design of the original SE, right? You don’t get the home button and there’s a notch, but it has the flat edges and general dimensions of the older iPhones. I think that’s pretty much as good as we’re going to get.
That B-roll at 9:27 just brings me way back in time, back when the iPhone and the iPod Touch (still running iOS 4/5/6) became affordable and popular. Around 2011/2012, almost everyone in high school, had one of these two devices (at least, here in the Netherlands). Everyone had those silly apps like iBeer, and fun simple games like Fruit Ninja, it was so cool back then, it was a time where (apart from Twitter and Facebook) there just wasn't really anything else interesting. The iPhone 5 running iOS 6 feels like the end of an era for me, the end of the Steve Jobs era. After Steve died and the release of iOS 7, they changed the UI designs of iOS and OS X, to a material/flat design, leaving Apple's characteristic skeuomorphic design behind, changing the way Apple devices look. I really didn't like it at first, but after a few years, after all the little changes every new iOS version, they really improved the overall look, and it grew on me, I'm really liking it now. But it still doesn't have the same (almost homefeeling) aura as iOS 6 had. But I guess that's just the nostalgia, of a time, that's now, long gone.
I purchased the iPhone 5 when it released (still have the box and everything it came with to include the iPhone. It was so good, that I didn’t upgrade until the iPhone 11 was released. I truly enjoy the iPhone 11 and won’t be upgrading until the iPhone 14 is released (maybe). GREAT Video....
And what an amazing ecosystem it is. I have 3 MacBooks (mid-2010 15” Unibody MacBook Pro, Late 2010 11” MacBook Air, mid-2012 13” Unibody MacBook Pro), 2 desktop Macs (iMac 27” Mid-2011, Late 2014 Mac Mini) an iPod touch 4th gen, and an iPhone SE 2020. All except for the iPod touch (I broke it so it’s completely non-functional) sync together beautifully and it’s just something you can’t do with Windows and Android :)

I remember taking it out of its case sometimes because it looked so cool and was so thin and yet taller with a “huge” screen at the time. That being said, I thing the 5S was the biggest leap forward for iPhone. It was the first iPhone with: biometric security, 64-bit processor, the new iOS 7 redesign. All completely different and upgraded and yet in the same shell as the 5
My first one was the 3G...wow what a big thing that was back in the day. But my first "love" was the iPhone 4 with the introduction of the retina screen. Oh boy....now I want one again.....
My first iPhone was an iPhone 5, and I still use it. It's currently my main phone. Bought it March last year. The only thing that bothers me is that a lot of apps don't support the ios anymore and I have to use an other ios device to download an old version. Camera is better than mid-range androids that is in my household.(they told me, I didn't take my own conclusions. The processor is not good, but it's surprisingly stable and doesn't lag if you have enough storage easily in the UI. Unless your doing something intensive in an application, it runs ok. It was the one I could afford at the time and hoping to get a newer soon. Watched apple content for years and finally could enter the I life.
The iPhone 5 holds a special place in my heart. While it wasn’t the first iPhone I’ve owned, but it was the one and only iPhone I’ve stood (and slept Lol) in an Apple Store line on launch day for. I was number 42 in line, and I was rewatching Avatar: The Last Airbender S1 to past the time, until I fell asleep until the early morning. I had preordered the AT&T 5 in white with 64GB. I was super excited one I got it home and experienced it for the first time. This will be forever my favorite iPhone for all time….and this video gave me the push I needed to go ahead and order this open box, yet brand new condition iPhone 5 running iOS 6 off eBay that I’ve been watching for some time. Can’t wait to re-experience the 5 on iOS 6 again. Thanks for this video Luke!
My first iPhone was a 5S. It was a refurbished one and had some issues, and then I upgraded to an iPhone 6S, then a 7 for me and my mom, and finally the 12 for my mom and I. Ever since I had an iPhone, I have loved them and won’t use anything else.
I still keep my silver iPhone 5 by my bed to listen to music and podcasts. It feels so tiny as all my phones since have been pluses. I used it for awhile and probably would have kept going but the battery life was getting short. Do love it though.
I still use a 5S regularly. It's a live stock ticker on my desktop, and a voice notes mule for when I'm writing on the road. As you (Luke) well know, it's amazing what you can still do on a vintage Apple device!
I stood in line for 6 hours to get that phone on release day, while on vacation in Hawaii! During that 6 hours in the heat I started talking to the guy in line in front of me, and we traded phone numbers. We have been friends since, and my wife and I are going to grab lunch with him when we head back over to Oahu next month!. I still remember seeing the phone for the first time when an Apple employee brought the iPhone out in a little plastic box for everyone to look at. Such a fun trip!
This beast was my first iPhone, I have used it until March 2020 haha I got 11 Pro after it, what an upgrade!

My first iPhone was the iPhone 5 and I love the phone. If it wasn’t stolen from me I would’ve probably used it for many more years, at least until the iOS support stopped. And my love for iPhone 5 is the main reason why I’m getting an iPhone 12 mini, just because it looks and feels almost like iPhone 5. It’s small squared off and just beautiful. Who would’ve thought that a new phone could bring such a nostalgia?
I have 8 of these still sealed in a box of 10 (2 have been opened by scoundrels) They were left behind when Apple moved head office in Sydney and we did not find them until years later during office re-structure, we tried to return them, but they were not interested.
i never had an iphone and never touched one ever in my entire 23yrs. Seeing this unboxing makes me feel bad and great at the same time becausw i never get to experience iPhones and seeing this right now watching how you guys experienced an iPhone. Thanks for the video bud
My first iPhone was iphone 4...But this iPhone 5 is the best iPhone ever. I have used smartphones since 2006 from the likes of Sony Ericsson, Nokia N series, Motorola, Blackberry, iPhones, Samsung, Xperia, HTC, Google Pixels...... But I have to say the best phone ever made, according to me is iPhone 5. There is something about this phone running iOS 6, it is unmatched. iOS 6 and iPhone 5 is a match made in heaven. If apple made an iphone 5 in 2021 I would still buy it, even if its $2000.
My iPhone 5 was my first white iPhone. I put it in a navy blue leather case and it looked like something you'd find on a yacht (to me at least). Lovely phone!
the iPhone 6 was my first phone. I had an iPod Touch 4th gen first, then a 5th gen, parents made me wait to get a phone, so I got my sister's iPhone 6 as a hand-me-down sorta thing, upgraded to the iPhone 7 when it came out, and here I am a few years later with an iPhone XS, looking to upgrade this September or October.
I loved my 5 so much! I still have mine, never dropped it or anything. I ended up going with the 12 mini recently switching up from a 7 Plus. Big phones just don’t make sense. Using my 7 Plus was getting really annoying because of its size.
I had a 4S as my first which I got in 7th grade because my uncles company had a family bundle where they would buy their employees and there family and iPhone and pay for the service, my aunt and uncle didn’t have kids and generally always give me a big gift at Christmas and my birthday and I got the 4S for Christmas to replace my Nokia which I had for emergency or to tell my parents when to pick me up from after school activities. I remember how cool it felt to have a iPhone when everyone else had a cheap phone or an iPod. Also having Siri right when it came out was just a whole different level of cool. Thanks for this video it brought me back and I am so glad I kept my 4S and the box and all the extras other than the cable which broke a long time ago.
I am with you. The iPhone 5 was and still is iconic. I’m on my iPhone 12 mi I because I feel this is the offspring of the iPhone 5 and iPhone 5S. My first iPhone was the iPhone 4. Steve Jobs was a genius in pushing the original iPhone Purple team in developing the original iPhone. Thanks for your content sir.
Worth noting that this was Apple’s last 32-bit flagship iPhone ever. The iPhone 5S heralded the dawn of 64-bit computing on iPhone, which has remained the status quo ever since. Only the budget iPhone 5C stayed on 32-bit architecture.
My first iPhone was the iPhone 5s, going all the way to iOS 12, and it has double the RAM of the iPhone 5. The iPhone 5 btw can reach iOS 10. You shouldn't leave it on iOS 6, it will hold the performance back a lot! It is pretty incredible how much the S edition of an iPhone can be so noticeably better than the normal one... Today iPhones are trash with paired parts everywhere!
This brought back so many memories. The iPhone 5 was my first iPhone too. I loved that thing so much. I got it around the time of its release and kept it for more than 5 years. I never updated it past iOS 8.4.1. It became tough to use since Apps were dropping support for iOS 8, so I upgraded to a 8 Plus in 2018.
I don’t know if anyone else remembers but the iPhone 5 had its own “gate” with scratches and chips straight from the factory on the chamfered edges which affected the first batch and was later fixed. The 5 was my second iPhone and one that I preordered (demand was high) and it arrived late and mine had the factory scratches. Didn’t matter though because you look at it for five minutes, call it pretty, and then slap it in a case for the rest of its life.
I remember that my dad has a box of an iPhone 5 with its manual and other things, he even has the iPhone 5 on iOS 8, unfortunately, neither my dad nor I want to sell this since for him it is something very valuable.

Thanks for this video Luke!
mine was the 4s :) just recently got my 12 pro and the design is giving me such nostalgia, I love it so much
My first iPhone was a 5S.
This beast was my first iPhone, I have used it until March 2020 haha
I got 11 Pro after it, what an upgrade!
I miss the slide to unlock so much so satisfying
3G > 3GS > 4 > 5S > 6 > 8+ > XR
i never had an iphone and never touched one ever in my entire 23yrs. Seeing this unboxing makes me feel bad and great at the same time becausw i never get to experience iPhones and seeing this right now watching how you guys experienced an iPhone. Thanks for the video bud
This was my first apple phone, i bought this one in January 2013 for 59000 indian rupee which was equivalent to $1150 US at that time.
5c for me, loved the 2gb of storage on it
Lol
This is the kind of content I keep coming back for. Kind of unique, love it.
8:12 well, you still have ios 6 on an iphone 5 which is kinda rare
I absolutely loved the black iPhone 5. The absolute cleanest looking iPhone to date.
Can you please make a video comparing the speed of opening apps on iOS 6 on that iPhone vs the another iPhone 5 on its latest firmware?
The first iPhone I had was the first one. I still have it. I recently got an iPhone 4 and an iPhone 5 and managed to get both back to iOS 6 !
Still one of my favorite overall Iphone designs and the black color on these were just something else.
Do you think iphone 6s is still good this 2021??
Where u get that, I still have one that went through so much abuse running 6.1.2.
My first iPhone was the iPhone 4, but I used the iPhone 5 for years and I absolutely loved it
My first iphone was a 5C. I absolutely loved it
Worth noting that this was Apple’s last 32-bit flagship iPhone ever.
My first iPhone was the 4s. Still one of my most favorite phones of all time.
Got a boatload of deketict iphones from. A phone store...most didn't work but I swapped BATTS and lo and. Behold I had 3 5
10:30 my Grandpa has preserved his iPhone 5 in a otterbox and still running it on iOS 6 and it still looks new so I beg to differ 😂
I still have and use an original iPhone SE 64GB. I cannot stop using it! These chassis were awesome!
i was trying to buy a iphone 5 for my collection but i got scammed 2 times already so i dont know if i should try to get another
Thank you for the video. By far my most favourite iPhone of all.
I got started with the first generation iPod touch. Then I upgraded to an iPhone 3GS. My favorite iPhone is the 5S.
I remember that my dad has a box of an iPhone 5 with its manual and other things, he even has the iPhone 5 on iOS 8, unfortunately, neither my dad nor I want to sell this since for him it is something very valuable.
