You’re a great help for me. I’m on the Honor Guard for my fire department in Louisiana and I’ve been asked to practice playing Taps on my trumpet so that I can take over as the Taps performer at memorial functions, funerals, etc. Problem is/was that though I played trumpet in my school band for three years in middle school, I haven’t picked up my trumpet in probably 32 years. The basics are coming back to me thanks to your warmup videos and good advice. With some practice and some luck I hope to get up to speed enough to at least play a nice clean Taps in the next 60-90 days or so. I can already hit several notes on the lower and middle end, but the highest notes in taps I can’t quite reach yet.
Anyway, I’ll keep practicing and just wanted to thank you for these videos. They’re great.

Great videos! Thanks. I’m 53 and haven’t played trumpet in 38 years. I’ve been at it for a few days and I was able to play low F# to high E after following your advice. Thanks. I cannot wait to practice again! Great warmups!

I like the suggestions. I've been off the horn for about 25 yrs and retuned about 5 yrs ago. Started classes but these were not often enough and now I'm into a more frequent class and try to practice often. Sometimes I miss a few days and I've been doing shorter practice sessions sometimes doing just scales, long tones and Arban or Clarke exercises. I have a routine which I try to follow. I find that doing the exercises has been a huge help, my slurring is better and my rhythm has improved. I have also taken tips from the various of the several gurus on the internet. Initiallyi played the bugle, and when I first played the trumpet I just blew and had little idea what was happening. Now I'm more technical and understand when I'm going wrong and how I should correct it by referring to the basics and checking what I'm doing.

    Hey Jim,
As I've just said in my reply to Eric's post, you make learning fun.
I had my first on-site trumpet lesson last week and the teacher is nothing on you!
I was quite disturbed about his valve oiling techniques after seeing your simple and logical method.
I can't imagine a better teacher than you and it's been worth the 40 year wait to start playing this amazing instrument.
    You're a star!
    Cheers,
    Simon.

    Hey, Jim.
    Thanks for all these vids.
I've been playing bass and guitar for 42 years and took the dip into Brass a few years ago in between touring. Been really digging into the Trumpet the past few months and your vids are an excellent source of information. Already see the improvement in the month since I found your page.
Many, many thanks for these vids and for spending the time posting them.
    Cheers!
    E.

      I agree 100% Eric.
I've wanted to play trumpet for 40 years and my incredibly beautiful and thoughtful other half recently bought me a trumpet for my birthday.
I did some Googling and found Jim's videos and practice sheets and I just don't want to stop now.
Jim's funny, engaging and passionate which makes learning fun!
