Lady Bird Johnson Home Movies, Home Movie #30: LBJ Ranch, Spring 1965. Footage of Mr. and Mrs. Johnson and friends recreating at Lake LBJ, the LBJ Ranch and surrounding areas. This is a color film with retrospective narration by Mrs. Johnson. Following is a scene by scene description, courtesy of the Audio Visual Archives at the LBJ Library.
The film opens in April of 1965with Mrs. Johnson and Marjorie McNamara visiting the Scharnhorst (part of the LBJ Ranch). Okamoto takes pictures of Marjorie McNamara in the rock formations. Lady Bird Johnson climbs and hikes around with Marjorie McNamara in the rocks. Lady Bird sits on the granite behind a blooming cactus and then looks at a devil's pin cushion. The camera zooms in on the devil's pin cushion.
Next Lady Bird stands and then sits in a field of bluebonnets. Okamoto takes pictures of old stone fence. Mrs. Johnson walking toward the old stone fence. Marjorie McNamara sits behind a prickly pear cactus. Lady Bird, wearing a sombrero, walks in a field of bluebonnets near a rock fence and then Marjorie walks in a field of bluebonnets. Next, we see wild flowers near roadside and Mrs. Johnson identifies them through her retrospective narration.
The next scenes are of cattle (registered white-faced Herefords) in pens of the Scharnhorst. Dale Malachek and his son brand cattle. Dale Malachek's two sons round up cattle. Malachek brands a cow's horn. The camera pauses on Alfredo, a ranch hand.
Then we get a panoramic view of the valley of the Scharnhorst and Lady Bird Johnson leans against a rock with the valley in background.
Now the film cuts to Lyndon B. Johnson, Lady Bird Johnson and others boating on Lake LBJ. LBJ, sitting at the wheel, wears a pink shirt and white cap. Four men accompany him on the boat. Mrs. Johnson narrates that it is Memorial Day weekend. Lady Bird's brother Tony Taylor and his wife, Matianna Taylor sit on the boat. We get a view of a house on a cliff overlooking Lake LBJ, and then of LBJ at the wheel of the boat with Jack Valenti, Judge A.W. Moursand, and others.
Next LBJ is sitting at the wheel with Beagle in the boat. We see an unidentified woman riding in the boat. Lady Bird, in bathing suit, suns on the boat deck with Lee Udall, Stewart Udall, Jake Jacobsen, Abe Fortas, and Jack Valenti.
President Johnson, wearing plaid shirt and white cap, sits at the wheel and talks with others. William O. Douglas (Bill Douglas), in a cowboy hat, is on the boat. Marianne Means talks to LBJ. Stewart and Lee Udall sit on the boat.
Again we see LBJ at the wheel, this time with A.W. Moursund and others. Stewart Udall swims in the lake. Lady Bird floats and swims in Lake LBJ.
Now it's twilight, and Lady Bird Johnson is sitting in the boat, talking. Another boat pulls two water skiers by.
Next LBJ (wearing sweater and cap) talks to Marianne Means on the boat deck, joined by John Chancellor.
Warren Woodward is on the boat with John Chancellor, an unidentified man, LBJ, Lady Bird, Marianne Means, and Beagle.
Now the Johnsons are at Mary Margaret's house, near Lake LBJ. Wild flowers are blooming and we see a butterfly on a wild flower. LBJ talks to John Chancellor and an unidentified man.
Next the film cuts to the front yard of the LBJ Ranch. We see trees and peacocks on the roof of the ranch house.
