I could have told you those "Smokey and the Bandit" rear louvers were bad luck. At least you had a Little Person come in to save the day! 3:53 He's a total bad ass. Seriously.

This is so painful to watch, I was actually holding back tears. I hope you never have to go through that again. Here's to rebuilding what you still have Mike.

That fire crew came super fast, and shoutout to that guy with the e46 giving his extinguisher, surprised other guys just drove past...
I guess this video also shows that having an extinguisher is good, but having the proper one, and a nicely sized one is even more important, because if you got one but it's not enough, it's basically the same as none.

Damn this is heartbreaking to watch. Fire is a real threat, and it’s a important reminder to have a adequate fire safety system in place. Thank you for posting this!

I started carrying an extinguisher when I was stationed in Germany with my Gen IV Swap. I unfortunately had the same thing happen to me while driving to Amsterdam, car was overboosting and blew a hole in the block at 80mph on the highway. It instantly caught the oil on fire, thankfully I was able to put it out with the one I had on hand. That was an expensive day trip.

Thanks fort posting this. I did some vehicle specific fire training for a previous job and all things considered, you did a great job in a VERY stressful situation. You got out alive, nobody else was hurt, you saved most of the car...thats like almost a perfect outcome in a situation like this. I'm glad you're okay. You didn't make as many mistakes as you probably think. You MIGHT have had better luck getting the engine cover off to PULL AIM SQUEEZE SPRAY at the base of the fire (fuel source), but there's also risk of adding additional air (one leg of the fire triangle). Go easy on yourself. You'll build a better car for this AND sharing it means countless other track nerds will learn from seeing this as well. You did the community a solid sharing this. Thanks.
ANY car can catch fire. Extinguishers are cheaper than almost any part.
The advantage of a bigger bottle is it gives you more time to fight a larger fire.
The advantage of a fire suppression system is it takes the human element out of fighting the fire.
    Take care man.

I'm physically sick watching this video. Mike, I've been following you since the buildup of your last MR2 Turbo. Been there through all the steps of this car over on Apex Attack. This is truly heartbreaking. Glad you are ok and I'm sure you'll build it back better than ever.

Dude, I just randomly thought of you right now, I remember seeing your posts on MR2OC. I bought my first MR2 right around the same time you got your first one. I had so many plans for that thing, your blog that came later really inspired me. I think you may have even messaged me about something I had for sale on FB. To see this happened, and hearing the genuine distress in your voice just breaks my heart, literally made my eyes water. I am so relieved the fire crew was able to get there in time to save it. Pour the beer out for the fallen soldier, but I know you’ll come back stronger again.

A faulty oil pressure sensor had me unexpectedly absent during this event. It was gut wrenching to watch you go through this horrific experience, and quite easy to imagine myself in your place. I was asking out loud, where are all the workers? I'm glad you explained it in the text overlay.
Dustin has always demonstrated excellent situational awareness and decision-making on track. We are blessed to have him in our group! Although I will say that he took his harness off a touch early; I assume he wouldn't have done that if I was behind him 🤣

Crazy how much more effective their extinguishers are. Makes me really think about adequate fire extinguishers in any car, even for normal road use.
The one you had with you was like pissing on a house fire. Must have been heart wrenching to see this happening.

    • @stanleylaw5998
      @stanleylaw5998 Год назад

the reusable stainless ones like Amerex, just use low TDS tap water and surfactant.
there're multiple mechanisms that make these water-based extinguishers super effective, though at the cost of weight.
      a) water to steam takes away heat
      b) surfactant coats the fuel separating it from oxygen
they have models that have foam nozzles too, foam is especially useful for e85 fuels, since the alcohol make them problematic. alcohol, being so much lighter, always wants to float on top of everything. fortunately foam, combined with atmospheric air, can float on top of that.

Mike. So sorry this happened to you and your build.
I would look at it on the bright side. If this happened outside of the track it would have taken a far worse turn than this.
So glad you are safe and sound. I hope the car is able to fully recover from this (I know it will with you being it's owner)
Please keep your head up sir, and take care 👍

The unit I had been carrying in my mk2 (smaller than the 2.5 lb A/B/C rated units in my mk1's) is similar size to yours there, and I won't be relying on that one in the future for anything more than a backup in the trunk maybe at best... I'll borrow, from the mk1's, or buy another, 2.5 lb A/B/C for my mk2 for all future drives, which at least gives me more extinguisher to work with. All of mine are street cars. Thank you for posting this, it is certainly eye opening and made me realize I need a bigger unit (at least) in the mk2. Glad they were able to save the chassis and the damage wasn't worse... mainly I'm glad you're OK and that you were quick to get to a safe pull off and exited the car very quickly.

So sorry this happened! Great video for so many reasons. Hope you will share what your new plans for fire safety are. I put a hole in my first K24 on my 5th drive about 2 months ago. The exhaust was not hot enough for a fire in my case, but it did get me thinking about what can be done to shield the manifold from oil. Your car is beautiful and I hope you can restore it.

What kind of extinguisher and size is good for fighting against oil/chemical fire?
They have this new technology where you just throw a red ball in and it would explode and put fire out instant.

Sorry to see this!! Ive replayed what I would do in this moment over and over again - luckily it hasn’t happened to me YET. There was a flag station on the right prior to where you stopped. I would have gone as close to that flag station as possible so they could radio the situation in live and also so I could use their fire extinguisher when mine ran out.
