None of the nine Kojima directed games need a remake. Part of the charm of the series is playing them in release order and experiencing how the controls and graphics change. That being said, we need a port of the Legacy Collection to current gen consoles and PC.
God, metal gear solid 1! I'd say that out of MGS 1 and MGS 2, MGS 1 is much more emotional. The codec calls are brilliant in helping characterize everyone! I especially loved the choice to give up. I felt like it was inevitable making it just that much more sad when I learned you can endure the torture. It gave me a really unique experience that I don't really think can be achieved with most of the games I've played by surprising me. All the speeches at the end of the game were also just so memorable and almost made me cry many times. I especially loved the speech on genes in the credits from Naomi. What a game! We only don't need a remake because Konami without Kojima would completely destroy this series. So it's better to be dead and be loved than to be revitalized and be hated by everyone.
MGS is fine the way it is. What they need to remake is Metal Gear 1 and 2: Solid Snake. From pixelated 16 bit overhead gameplay to fully rendered 3D 4K gameplay with its same storyline intact. That is a challenge and something worth a remake.
If you're the type of person that can see past the old school controls and dated graphics then this is definitely worth firing up on an emulator to play through. Also put yourself in the place of someone witnessing this as a leap in technology, cos even though the gameplay and graphics are dated now they were so beyond anything we had at the time
I would just pick up Phantom Pain sometime. The moment-to-moment gameplay and overall atmosphere are equal to or better than the best there is in any game ever.
This and Nier Automata share the top spot for me. Incredible game, incredible characters. I just played it again for the first time in 20 years. Yup, it's still amazing. It opened my eyes to what could be done in the medium. No other game came even close to the experience this game delivered.
Those are also some of my favorites the others being the original FFVII (I hate the remake with passion), Last of us and Witcher 3, in no particular order. Each of these games had a huge impact in my life, not just about gaming but about how I see the world. If you didn’t yet I suggest you to also play Nier Replicant
I'm not sure who actually made the decision, but having Greg Eagles originally voice Gray Fox was a stroke of genius. A nod to James Earl Jones as Darth Vader that people seem to overlook. The fact that Kojima removed this from Twin Snakes is a hilarious bit of irony considering his love for US cinema.
@@minuscaseus I know Kitamura directed Twin Snakes, but I thought it was Kojima's decision to have the voices redone in the way they were. Also, didn't Eagles voice DARPA Chief still in Twin Snakes?
It was not a good choice, the voice actor was good but it was obvious that it was a black mans voice. Twin snakes voice actor matches the character of gray fox better
@@jamesrevere2992 I mean, ideally, you'd have Eagles doing the voice until the mask comes off, then you'd have Paulsen doing the voice. Just like how they did with Jones and Prowse in Star Wars. Just think it was a missed opportunity, is all.
This game was amazing and had me hooked at like 8 years old! Can’t believe how long ago that was and how fresh this still is on my mind. My favorite series ever!
3:16 I always liked when badass fictional characters tend to be on the "shorter" side(by american standards). Typically male badass characters are 6'+( 6'3" tends to be the favorite). Now I've heard this is only partially intentional, as to the Japanese, 5'10" is actually considered to be tall. Which is why characters like Leon S Kennedy are 5'11" and the tallest RE protagonist(Chris) is 6'1". I think the varrying of Snake's height is them trying to scale it up to meet the american standards of "tall".
One of the first games I ever got for my PS1 was metal gear solid, picked it up used. I was hooked immediately. Have played every game in the series except for some of the portable titles, I love metal gear.
I just want the first 3 games to get remakes/remastered or just get ported to newer consoles, I'm stuck playing phantom pain, survive, and ground zeroes 😭
@wintersnake mgs1 doesn't really need a remake. the only thing you can fix is visuals and a few bad things the game has. Also, they did remake mgs1, but it was only released on one console and wasn't all that good. Metal Gear 1 and 2 definitely need a remake.
Agreed. I would actually love to see some of the story from Big Boss s viewpoint as well as David s rookie mission..The parallels and drama if done right could be great..Metal Gear 2 had a great story in its game already. So to me the Metal Gear story would be the one that is vague enough to do something like a duel Vantage viewpoint story arc involving both Young and old Snakes..But that's my wishful thinking..Metal Gear 2 can be fully realized and transferred since the lore and its script is right there along with my favorite piece of music for its title sequence. This way they can bring Keifer Sutherland and David Hayter to do the roles. Or just bring back the VO from MGS 4 if Kiefer won't return..
Agreed. The story of the first game has alot of tolerances that would make a modern remake, loaded up with the yrs of lore that emerged subsequently, a tour de force in action and storytelling. Those first 2 games should be first in the queue if Konami ever decides to reopen this franchise to new releases. Full stop
I remember playing the demo first from a gamer magazine, and I was in heaven. I got the game when it released, and it sucked you right in..yes I cried when sniper wolf died and the wolves howed in the winter silence. Ooo, that's when ya know you were invested. And that silly joy I got when I finally got the invisibility device ooo. But my favorite outside snake himself and, of course, sniper wolf would be grey fox. He was such a mystery and so cool that he just added to the experience. Mantis, with the taking over the ps controller, was wild to experience back in those days you actually felt dumbfounded. Overall, there are so many memorable characters and feelings and substances that it stays with you.of course, I loved 2 and 3 , 4 was iffy for me. Tho I did enjoy phantom pain. Of course, there was the training game after the first one before MG2. That was cool, just if to play around with grey fox. The remake for GameCube wasn't to bad tho but to experience the first MG is nothing like it and if to do a remake now would be interesting but would have to really try hard to capture the feel of the first. You can have all the fancy graphics, but to really feel like the first is a must.ps you also know your a die hard when you made sure to listen to every radio transmission and thst alone was a wild trip.
I played peacewalker on the PSP in 2009 for over a hundred hours and it was my favorite for a long time, now it might be two again. I think mgsv was really disappointing
I'm happy mostly everyone wants more Metal Gear content. At the same time we all got plenty of mgs content. Plenty! I know we all want updated versions on current gen. Just don't forget to say thank you and be grateful for what is already made. I got the Legacy Collection for the PS3, so my wishes were granted. I'm good!
MG1&2 need remade. They’re literally the Big Boss and Venom Snake villain story they deserve to be told and played. The MSX versions are so ancient the gameplay doesn’t really translate well anymore. While it’s great to be thankful, this is important part of the series.
If they ever do another MGS remake, I think they should include more in the way of content adapted from VR Missions. Hell, let us play a "Reverse/Rebirth" mode where you play through the events of the game from Grey Fox's perspective.
_You're that ninja_ I remember looking at this very cover 1:07 back in 2001-2002, thinking:"dafuq is this game about" After finishing this game I was a believer
One of my all time favorites. When I beat it as a kid I wanted to forget the game so I could do it again for the first time. As an adult I named one of my sons Gray. This game meant something to me.
The Twin Snakes was the Remake though. David Hayter took a huge pay cut to bring back the Original Cast. The phoned in performance from Jennifer Hale and lack off VR Missions did ruin the replay value.
I've watched A LOT of MGS analysis videos (probably ALL of them on RUclips lol), and yours is one of the best! MGS is my favorite game of all time, and my favorite of the series--it's because of the characters! I really appreciated your in-depth analysis on each... AND FOR SAYING NASTASHA IS SO UNDERRATED. THANK YOU. I wish we got more of her, either in this one or even in others of the series. I would love to see her beyond just a codec screen.
Thank You for the trip through memory lane. Mastery of a game! It was this game that truly made realize what gaming could be. And yes, GreyFix is also my favorite character in this universe
Scholar you are the Ace of the Childhood Air Force Squadron Thank You for revising this Classic that is close to me than anyother game I played this game when I was 7 with my Dad and Uncles and we all agree this was the greatest ps1 game for Stealth tactical planning and the story & characters
The old GFX and weird gameplay and polygons only make it MORE SPECIAL! If they remade this with an all-too-familiar over the shoulder camera, it would just be another Resident Evil 4 / Gears of War clone.
33:26 Exactly! They knew and it's fine! This is exactly the reason they'll never remake this game. I don't want them to ruin its legacy by chancing these character designs, dialogue, and humor for the "modern audiences". God damn, I hate that term.
Growing up with siblings means you share everything. Getting quality game time was hard but one afternoon my dad let me play this from start to finish. For 6 hours I had the big TV all to myself. It was here when I heard the after credits phone call and it got me really excited for the sequel. It was also my first go on extreme. I just liked the sound of it at the time. Had no idea the game was actually harder. 😅
It need to return on PS5 it's iconic game the masterpiece sony konami kojima it's US never forget never quit we need Metal gear solid back on playstation
Not gonna deny MGS's influence and importance in the gaming industry, but I wouldn't say that MGS1 is a flawless game. The 2nd half really drops in quality when it comes to gameplay and the stealth is way too barebones. Some of the the dialogue is also pretty bad.
Doesn't need a remake, but a re-release tweaked to run on modern systems easier. Figure out a way to get rid of the pressure sensitive buttons on the newer games too. Need XInput support to be a lot better in the series as well.
If not a remake, then a port to pc for the entire series because this is probably the most difficult series to emulate flawlessly, especially mgs4. It's really sad.
I agree. It's a masterpiece and the pixel graphics are charming. If they remake it, they'll make changes and usually it makes for a worse game. I rather have a new similar game with another title (Not MGS). A new IP.
I remember getting a free demo of MGS from Pizza Hut back in the day before it originally released. Anybody else remember getting PS1 game demos from pizza hut back in the mid/late 90s?I played that demo over and over for months until my parents got me a copy of the game. It is an all time classic and was super hyped leading up to its release. It was the game that changed what people thought about video games and what they could be. Before this we only had SNES and Genisis. It was a massive leap forward in gaming, maybe one of the biggest leaps forward ever.
Only commenting so I won't get spoiled, but I just played through the first hour of Metal Gear Solid for the very first time recently. Controls are something to get used and polygons for days for the cutscenes, but the gameplay itself, soundtrack, cinematography, voice acting comes together and brings a level of intrigue that you're kinda surprised a game like this can be brought to life in a such a way, especially all these years later. The off putting feel of the graphics is literally thrown out due to how well directed the cutscenes & even character interactions on the codec are. And the voices that deliver said interactions, immersing you into the story. It's amazing how a game this old ages so well. I've been on & off on Metal Gear over the years, but this is one I intend on finishing & then go beyond from there.
It took me about a decade to find out Meryl was the Colonel's daughter. Was about to play MGS4, when I decided I should play 1-3, I wondered why I didn't have the stealth camo. Looked up how to get it, and was floored when the brand new Codecs came up. 😮
Goddamn badass wingman 😂 Spaghetti Western maximum 😂 Man, I was 18 when this game was released. It just oozes cool. What a shockwave that went through the gaming industry. It’s just as impactful as SMB and SF2 before and Z:Botw in recent years.
They are re-releasing the games on all systems under the legacy collection, that will serve as your update to controls. You don't have to buy the remakes if you don't want to but many others including myself would love to see all the originals released and remakes.
The music at 5:26 is from the MSX games, right? 🤔 Excellent video dude, I started playing the franchise back at 2004 when I was 10, and still, I'm totally obsessed with this.
This game DOES need a remake but by people that actually love the game. If Konami do it, there will be micro-transactions in The Docks to get the stealth camo right away for only 9.99 But imagine it getting some of the love and respect Capcom has given to R:E remakes - adding quality of life improvements, skimming some of the fat, adding new things to keep long-time fans still guessing, little nods to the lore going forwards but all without losing the essence of what made the games they are remaking great. Imagine MGS in the Fox Engine with the option to play it in traditional top-down style and a radar, or free-camera without one. Imagine having a game made with the ability to first-person shoot in mind (unlike MGS:TS) and making it challenging and rewarding.
That’s crazy some time ago I was thinking what was one aspect that stand ou in each MGS and the characters was exactly what I thought of MGS1, I do not recall what was about the others I think 2 was the plot, 3 the ambiantation, 4 being the culmination of everything and V the gameplay. I don’t remember if was exactly it but was something around those lines
Watching meme videos and i don't see many references after mgs1, that's quite telling. It's really better if Konami remake other mgs games, this one is too unique. No other mgs has this variety in tone and atmosphere, maybe because the ps1 sometimes makes a whole different vibe. Like the Com. Tower has enough to make it look and sound like a horror game underneath. The sound mixing is always at the red and boosted, the reverb in every place and cutscene, and the meaty gun sounds, to the little bits of radio sound. all those things creates a choking foreboding atmosphere that the future games just don't really have. I wish i could say that for MGS2 but it's too clean. it's fine, every mgs feels different and that's why the series will always be fresh. more over this series needs to die, and only be ported, maybe remake the older classics.
i do believe older gen games need to remaster for the PC version but we all know that konami will never do that even tho they could make bank by releasing all 4 games in one ( hell even portable ops)
I don't want a full-on remake, but I absolutely want a cross-platform enhanced port of Integral, with some extra customization options. Make it clear which options deviate from the original game, allowing players to have an authentic experience if they so choose, but also have fun fucking around with new stuff if they want to. I am terrible at the game without the radar, but I would love to play against the enhanced enemy AI of Hard and Extreme while still having the radar. I know that would piss off some purists, but I don't really care. Also, what would be cool are challenge scenarios set in Shadow Moses that are more complex than the VR missions. Think Peace Walker's Extra Ops. Maybe a boss rush, some boss variants, just some fun extra stuff. A toggle between the PS1 audio, the rerecorded Twin Snakes audio, and maybe a version of the PS1 audio that's been remastered as much as possible to remove the quality flaws that led to the Twin Snakes re-recording in the first place. Given the age of the original engine, it might require the game to be remade, but other games have been recreated with an eye towards authenticity before. Look at Christian Whitehead's pre-Sonic Mania reverse-engineered ports of the early Sonic games. It could be done with MGS1, given the right development team.
I remember when I played the demo from PlayStation magazine I knew I needed this game as soon as it came out. My friend at the time didn’t think it was going to be a good game but I convinced him it was amazing and he grew to love it. This game final fantasy 7 and resident evil 2 are some of my best gaming memories then later mgs 2 and 3 were just as good.
MGS may not need a remake but it could definitely use a port, currently the best way to play it is on aging hardware with more then likely a burnt disc (since the physical discs are getting rarer and rarer with each passing moment) OR play the GoG version which is functional even if it's lacking a lot of features (doesn't play nice with non 4:3 monitor resolutions, can't really emulate the psycho mantis fight, is lacking rumble support almost entirely). The original is fine but as time goes on that experience is going to be harder and harder for people to actually play.
I would much prefer a remake of Metal Gear 1 and Metal Gear 2 Solid Snake. (Though, I would prefer a reimagined version of it, because the games didn't really had much of a plot since the series only became what we know and love after MGS1.) Since those games told the rise of Solid Snake and the downfall of Big Boss.
In addition to the MGS series people should really jump into the authors kojima heavily references and celebrates in this series specifically John Carpentir who serves as the visual inspiration for revolver ocelot and who wrote and directed the escape from la and new york films, big trouble in little china, and the thing - that the character Snake Pliskin who is same character from the games played by kurt Russell. If your younger and you havent seen kurt russell doing snake your in for a treat. additionally the character Trautman from rambo is a ringer for roy cambell, there are dozens of other references from cinema from dr. strangelove, to the predator but what cements it all is kojimas cohesive worldview that gives all characters meaning while not falling into any good guy/ bad guy tropes, these games are political masterpieces reinforcing the idea that in a world with finite resources, there are no absolute enemies just relative ones with competing goals, "Tomorrows ally is yesterdays enemy, and vice versa".
Yes, every single mainline game DOES deserve the RE treatment. The originals hold up unbelievably well. But given that we will never get a Kojima MGS again, why not? Why not create a giant open Shadow Moses or Big Shell? Could you imagine Raiden with new combat techniques? Having each version of Snake playing a bit different?
okay honestly, having every major area of every game (except 4, obviously) remade in the style of Afghanistan and Angola/Zaire from TPP sounds fucking awesome, if executed well
Every game that follows expands the lore already hinted at or briefly touched on in MGS1… who thought a character like Master Miller would get a full back story and heavy presence all the way in the fifth installment
Metal Gear Solid already had a remake so I don't see an issue with another remake. The Twin Snakes felt like a different experience and just another take on the game, it can never replace the OG since it's a masterpiece much like the OG Resident Evil 4 could never replace the latest one. However AFAIK the remakes are not meant to function as a replacement for the OG games at all since Konami are (finally) re-releasing all of the original MGS games on every platform for everyone to enjoy as they were originally intended. I see it far more as a completely separate experience to the original, much like the Resident Evil 2 remake was in comparison to the OG game.
Sorry but yeah it should be remade. It needs a 1 to 1 remake with modern graphics and controls. Kojima has to oversee it though… no new director inserting their interpretation of what Kojima’s intentions were. We need the same voice actors if possible or we need the old dialogue tracks remastered and manipulated with Celemony Melodyne and advanced reverb algorithms. It can be done. It should be done. We’d have to find a work around for the memory card trick we used for that Psych Mantis boss battle. But in summary; it can happen and it needs to happen. We deserve it. I don’t know if you all noticed but there aren’t a lot of PS1 and PS2 consoles operational anymore.
I remember playing this with my brother when we were younger, thinking it was gonna be a cool shoot’em up game and discovering one of the greatest experiences I’ve ever had playing a game. I may have zoned out a bit during the long ass cut scenes because I was too young but that doesn’t change the fact that this is still one of the best games I’ve ever played lol

Kojima didn't direct Twin Snakes. And all the voice lines were re-recorded. So it's likely that they couldn't get him back to do the voice again.
@@minuscaseus I know Kitamura directed Twin Snakes, but I thought it was Kojima's decision to have the voices redone in the way they were. Also, didn't Eagles voice DARPA Chief still in Twin Snakes?
@@Pensive_Scarlet I stand corrected. I didn't even realize he was still the DARPA chief. It's been a minute since I've played the game.
I absolutely love the series. I remember playing all the way back on PS2
That's it? Ps2?
Things started with MSX my friend
@@DarthPferd the farthest i go back with gaming is super Nintendo.
@@luckilew try Metal Gear 2 Solid Snake for MSX

We need a game with Gray Fox and Big Boss. A few pre ninja missions and some beginner snake missions with him learning cqc from big boss
That's what mgs5 should have been, I was so disappointed at the lost potential

big boss ?

Nastasha wrote a book on the experience called "In the darkness of shadow moses" raiden mentions it
Gotta relax with that, best video game reveal is definitely 'You are Revan.' First time going through that scene was shattering.
@@frankgrimes7388 It really was 🙂
I learnt from this video that Gray Fox can break you out of the cell. After all these years I never knew that
I found it out by accident after I botched the Ketchup trick Lol

I always liked when badass fictional characters tend to be on the "shorter" side(by american standards).
I've said it once I'll say it again, Metal Geat 1 and 2 for the MSX needs a remake not mgs1
All 3 of them need a remake
Full stop
MSX?
Loved this game and the pycho mantas fight is legendary.
Best boss fight ever!
I like the way the graphics have aged on this. I don’t know how pretty they would look on a modern 4k huge television.
Omg remember the blue pizza hut demo disc?
@@TacticsTechniquesandProcedures Do you feel the same way about MGS1’s gameplay?
Wow what an incredible video, please make more videos, especially about metal gear solid
If they ever do another MGS remake, I think they should include more in the way of content adapted from VR Missions. Hell, let us play a "Reverse/Rebirth" mode where you play through the events of the game from Grey Fox's perspective.
I love the way the character models talk.
_You're that ninja_
I remember looking at this very cover 1:07 back in 2001-2002, thinking:"dafuq is this game about"
After finishing this game I was a believer
every hit game deserves a remake with hd grahics and extra contents
One of my all time favorites. When I beat it as a kid I wanted to forget the game so I could do it again for the first time. As an adult I named one of my sons Gray. This game meant something to me.
Excellent snake, age hasn't slowed you down one bit
The Twin Snakes was the Remake though. David Hayter took a huge pay cut to bring back the Original Cast. The phoned in performance from Jennifer Hale and lack off VR Missions did ruin the replay value.
Remake? No. Remaster? Yes!
Couldn't agree more
Thank You for the trip through memory lane.
They're gonna screw it up the moment they remake it.
Great video btw!
Just joined after this video would love more keep up the amazing work do
Maybe not a remake but definitely a ps5 and xbox modern update remaster. We do need the 2 metal gear from NES remake though.
I remember a time when the only reason I went to school was to look at screenshots for this game on this thing called the internet
Resident evil 4 and dead space didn't need remakes but I'm very happy to have them.
Doesn't need a remake, but a re-release tweaked to run on modern systems easier. Figure out a way to get rid of the pressure sensitive buttons on the newer games too. Need XInput support to be a lot better in the series as well.
I never realized it was a cigarette in Nastasha's mouth. I always assumed it was a microphone. That's wild.
I was there when it was released. Although this is a classic, I would mind a remake
This game never fails to give me chills.
gta V didnt come out until 10+ years later but that Jim Houseman guy was the "Devin Weston" of THIS game
If not a remake, then a port to pc for the entire series because this is probably the most difficult series to emulate flawlessly, especially mgs4. It's really sad.
I remember missing the first disc if this game so I never could play it when I was younger.
I like how Null's design is a nod to the cyborg ninja of you observe carefully
I am playing the MGS games for the first time and I am so happy I made the decision to start with 1.
I recently play it on duckstation emulator and I was blown away how amazing this game is.
Goddamn badass wingman 😂
Spaghetti Western maximum 😂
Man, I was 18 when this game was released. It just oozes cool. What a shockwave that went through the gaming industry. It’s just as impactful as SMB and SF2 before and Z:Botw in recent years.
MGS may not need a remake, but it definitely needs to be more easily accessible on modern hardware.
I still play MGS1 on my PS Vita.
Honestly, i wish they'd do nothing but update the graphics and maybe controls, everything was perfect. The voice acting, score, everything was perfect
They are re-releasing the games on all systems under the legacy collection, that will serve as your update to controls. You don't have to buy the remakes if you don't want to but many others including myself would love to see all the originals released and remakes.
Konami makes pachinko machines and fired the leading mind behind MG/S.
They aren’t going to remake this.
They won’t ever.
You don’t have to worry.
The music at 5:26 is from the MSX games, right? 🤔
Excellent video dude, I started playing the franchise back at 2004 when I was 10, and still, I'm totally obsessed with this.
This game DOES need a remake but by people that actually love the game. If Konami do it, there will be micro-transactions in The Docks to get the stealth camo right away for only 9.99
But imagine it getting some of the love and respect Capcom has given to R:E remakes - adding quality of life improvements, skimming some of the fat, adding new things to keep long-time fans still guessing, little nods to the lore going forwards but all without losing the essence of what made the games they are remaking great.
Imagine MGS in the Fox Engine with the option to play it in traditional top-down style and a radar, or free-camera without one. Imagine having a game made with the ability to first-person shoot in mind (unlike MGS:TS) and making it challenging and rewarding.
Here we are, couple months later. MGS 3 ramek & MGS Master Collection Vol. 1
No one expected that but everyone need it so badly!!!
Kinda did? There had been alot of rumors going into the reveal.
Yes. U got the jist of it.
Good video. Reminds me how much I miss the MGS series.
i do believe older gen games need to remaster for the PC version but we all know that konami will never do that even tho they could make bank by releasing all 4 games in one ( hell even portable ops)
Metal Gear Solid changed my life, it is the best game i have ever played. Normally i just move on but this game needs a ps5 remake
found this on accident and immediately realized, "oh hey that's Saiyan Scholar! I've watched a lot of his videos already!"
I agree with everything excpet the Thumbnail
The old metal gear games do need remakes though. I wanna see snake set big boss on fire in 4k
(Though, I would prefer a reimagined version of it, because the games didn't really had much of a plot since the series only became what we know and love after MGS1.)
Since those games told the rise of Solid Snake and the downfall of Big Boss.
To this day the grey fox scenes are still sad to him saying hurt me more to his death scene amd snake screaming Fox.
Love the video bro. this game is a master piece i still listen to the cutscene videos 20 odd years after first playing
The whole series should be remastered and sold as a massive £200 to & £300 box-set on PS5.
MGS is my Favorite Series of All Time
Metal Gear Solid already had a remake so I don't see an issue with another remake.
I’m fine with modern graphics, new combos, cqc, but I don’t want them to alter the story.
The ending of this video was perfect
Oh my god, what an amazing video essay, 10/10 just like the game you are covering in the video.
Needs an upgrade, not a remake... just use the same music and voice acting with next gen graphics. Involve Kojima!
