    The Ukrainian Defense Forces may soon have an effective new type of weapon against Russian long-range guided aerial bombs, Ukranian volunteer Serhiy Prytula announced. Analysts from the military portal Defense Express assessed how possible this is.
    "There is one specific technical solution that was thought up here in Ukraine. This new type of weapon is currently being tested, and if it is successful, it will be put into production," said Prytula.
    Glide bombs are cheap. Russia is firing hundreds a week at Ukrainian targets at and behind the front lines. These bombs are small and difficult to spot on radar. They do not use propulsion or emit a detectable heat signature. Russian aircraft launch glide bombs dozens of miles behind the front lines, in relative sanctuary.
    Analysts emphasized that there are currently only a few methods of possible counteraction to Russian glide bombs.
    "The first is their destruction, for which, of course, an SAM system can be used, but it is impossible to call it effective. Moreover, the appearance of a Ukrainian anti-aircraft missile system would obviously have been announced somewhat differently. If not an SAM system, then the next candidate for the destruction of guided aerial bombs could be automated anti-aircraft installations such as the ship-based Phalanx CIWS or its land-based version Centurion C-RAM, which, by the way, Ukraine has repeatedly requested. But, as in the case of an SAM system, this is a full-fledged development that takes years and costs hundreds of millions of dollars, as the experience of Korea directly demonstrates," the report says.
    There are also alternative methods of disposal, the portal added:
    "Combat lasers or directed microwave radiation. But all this, even in Western countries with gigantic budgets, did not reach the prototype stage, as the British Dragon Fire is an excellent example."
    In addition, as analysts noted, UABs can also be countered by jamming their satellite navigation, but it is difficult to call this a final solution.
    "Therefore, it is entirely possible that we are talking about other methods of counteraction, the principle of which is not on the surface," the analysts concluded.
    Recall that earlier it was reported that Russian troops began using a new munition for strikes on Ukraine, which could change the situation on the ground. We are talking about the FAB-3000 M-54.
    Business Insider said the munition could be highly destructive to Ukrainian military and civilian targets.

      Likely more Patriot Batteries to shoot down the carrier aircraft at long range. Ukraine doesn't have enough. The SkyNEX system and Land based Phalamx CIWS clearly could shoot down the bombs. Ukraine has 2 SkyNEX used to defend Kyiv but I don't know of Phalanx yet.

    Glide bombs still use GPS satellite and can be detected by high altitude signal tracking by following the speed of the algorithms that are passing to the receiving end on the satellites that only Starlink systems are capable to be providing

    • @4DCResinSmoker
      @4DCResinSmoker Месяц назад +2

      Glide bombs most likely only need the GPS during their initial deployment. During which they set the bearing and glide slope to the target. Afterwards, if GPS is lost, the flight computer holds its bearing and glide slope. Thus making them nearly imperious to jamming.

    • @michaelccozens
      @michaelccozens Месяц назад

      @@4DCResinSmoker I don't know how accurate that is. Sure, the bombs will use inertial trackers and head in *generally* the same direction if GLONASS guidance is lost, but we're talking about precision weapons here. "Precision" is the whole ball-game, especially when you don't have the forces or money to do saturation bombing, even if you could get-away with it politically. And you don't get much precision when you're eyeballing a target from 50+ km away and trying to hit it with a dart. That's why such bombs have control surfaces; with the ranges being used and the tiny nature of the fortified targets in question, even a bit of turbulence is going to make your bombing mission little more than fireworks.
      The glide bombs are mostly used against fortified positions, and those tend to have a very small surface foot-print specifically to make them hard to bomb, as well as bunker-type positions to protect against blast-waves from nearby bombs. A near-hit ain't gonna cut it in such missions.

      likely they use GLONASS, not GPS. neither GPS or GLONASS has an emitted signature. they are receive only.

      @ilijaspasojevic7031 Месяц назад

      @@Grundewalt Don't write nonsense, when the whole normal world knows that from 1991 until 2010, it was a time of an almost completely unipolar world in which only the United States was concerned about everything. China was constantly threatened when it became economically stronger, Russia was light and undermined from the beginning of its independence. The oligarchs were deliberately set up to steal from this country, which is too rich in resources, and the money goes to the West, primarily to the US. At the head of Russia was an American man, a weakling and an alcoholic, Boris Yeltsin. The United States not only continued to adhere to the agreement that NATO would not expand to the east, but NATO also began to expand to the former member states of the USSR (specifically, the Baltic republics). Then in 1999, NATO bombed Serbia, Russia's ally and historically brotherly Slavic and Orthodox state, and already in 2001 or 2002, George W. Bush clumsily withdrew the US treaty with Russia on not deploying missile or anti-missile systems in Europe. The excuse was that the Aegis Ashore system were being deployed to defend Europe against a potential Iranian attack on Europe with ballistic weapons. That was such a wretched excuse: 1) Such opportunities (Iran only now has Europe, especially Western Europe), 2) Isn't it more logical to install anti-ballistic systems in Turkey, Saudi Arabia, and not in Poland and Romania. 3) Also, it immediately became clear to many that this is an existential threat to Russia, when it was understood where the systems were placed (as I mentioned in Poland, in Redzikowo, near the Baltic Sea, and in Devoselo in Romania, about 90 miles from Bucharest) and when it was understood that within just a few minutes those defensive missiles can be replaced by offensive tactical nuclear missiles, which would hit Russia in about 10 minutes! 4) And if we add that the US generously helped the separatist movement in Russia, specifically in the Caucasus, in Dagestan and Chechnya (let's imagine that today's Russia or China is helping some separatist movement, for example, so I'm giving a fictitious example, some separatists in Texas or in California). How would the US government react to that? Russia complained, but the US AND THE REST OF THE WEST PRETENDED NOT TO. 5) Things become more serious when President Putin dealt with the oligarchs and when he was able to lead an independent foreign policy. Russia definitely won in the Caucasus, it did not collapse like the USSR, as many in the US had hoped. Then, in 2007, President Putin gave his famous speech in Munich, when he warned the West for the first time, i.e. he let the West know that Russia knows all the time what the US and the entire West are doing, but that only now do they have the strength to oppose themselves and that now Russia is warning the West should stop provoking Russia. 6) The West did not stop, but became even more arrogant. First, they support a coup in Georgia and bring a pro-American man, a common criminal and careerist Mikheil Saakashvili to power, who invades the two breakaway republics of South Ossetia and Abkhazia, which were under the protection of Russian peacekeepers. Georgian forces attack the seceded republics as well as Russian peacekeepers, and in 5 days Russia comes to Tbilisi, the capital of Georgia. Georgia is defeated, and the Russian Armed Forces reform, realizing that this is only the beginning of problems with the West. 7) The Russians were right, a coup broke out again, this time in the much larger and militarily stronger state of Ukraine, where millions of ethnic Russians lived and still live, who overnight became third-class citizens (to which literally looked at them like animals.. in many places there was an organized "hunt for ethnic Russians and the Russian Orthodox clergy, terrible things happened) and where the Russian Black Sea Fleet was located. That's why the Russian Armed Forces performed an excellent and lightning-fast action, without being fired bullet carried out an action in Crimea, and the citizens of Crimea, mostly ethnic Russians, voted in a referendum to join Russia... by the way, such a referendum was already held in 1992 or 1993, but that was the time of full US hegemony, and then Russia could no longer to help their compatriots. However, Ukraine briefly created the Republic of Crimea, which quickly lost any kind of autonomy. However, in 2014, they could not do that. And not only in Crimea, but also in Donbass, in the richest mining region of Ukraine. There, the local Russians rose up in a general uprising. The fights were fought from 2014 until 2022, with the fact that a charade was created for the public. The so-called "Minsk Agreements" were made, which provided for a complete ceasefire (a ceasefire during which the Ukrainians killed 14,000 ethnic Russians, civilians, citizens of Donbass!), then autonomy for Donbass, and after a certain number of years, a referendum for the citizens of Donbass whether would stay in Ukraine or join mother Russia. Later, former German Chancellor Angela Merkel and French President Emmanuel Macron admitted that those agreements were a "charade" and that with them the West only wanted to "buy time" and to arm Ukraine in almost 8 years and prepare it for a protracted war with Russia. I know geopolitics and history very well.

    Both Putin and Lukashenko seems not be able to walk without fidgeting... I wonder why?
    Glide Bombs are problematic ofc. I think I would engineer a ground based camera based (maybe even a support drone for 200-300m up in air checking also) tracking system (really high resolution) and some sort of detection algorithm and a laser ranger sort of to get velocity and trajectory and then feed a solution to a "cheaper" 2000-3000 meter (50 cal) automated gun. To get it as cheap as possible and be prepared to loose some but maybe win the economics of it in the end... These can still be used for drone targeting ofc, and cruise missiles.
    But it would not be radar/IR based...
