  • The celebration of Halloween on October 31st actually has its origins in Christianity.
First, let’s look at the name.
Halloween is a shortened form of the phrase “All Hallows' Eve” because November 1st is the Feast of All Saints or “All Saints' Day.” Hallow is another word for saints. Eve refers to the evening before the actual celebration of a feast (like Christmas Eve).
All Saints' Day is a celebration and remembrance of all the holy men and women in heaven. These saints are united with God and thus, continue to pray for us on earth. Catholics remember these saints in gratitude for their lives and seek their prayers.
All Souls' Day on November 2nd is a day to remember all Christian souls who have died and to pray for them to join the company of saints.
The many traditions and customs surrounding Halloween like trick-or-treating, jack-o-lanterns, and dressing up in costumes developed separately from the Church liturgical celebrations in many different ways throughout the world. The origin of these traditions, however, all stem from the preparation for All Saints' Day.

You may want to mention too that All Hallows' Evening, All Saint' Day and All Souls' Day are collectively known as Hallowtide.
