- Reformist Masoud Pezeshkian has been elected as Iran’s new president, after beating his hardline conservative rival Saeed Jalili by nearly three million votes.
Speaking after the result was announced, he said he would extend his hand to all Iranians.
Dr Pezeshkian, a 71-year-old heart surgeon and member of the Iranian parliament, is critical of Iran’s notorious morality police and caused a stir after promising “unity and cohesion”, as well as an end to Iran's “isolation” from the world.
Millions of people boycotted the elections over the lack of choice in the candidates, dominated by Islamic hard liners, and the impossibility of real change as long as the supreme leader tightly controls policies.

It's the third "reformist" that got elected to the presidency but all of them are completely servile to the beards and don't change anything because all the power is in khamenei. Also, they are selected to run by the dictatorship so you shouldn't expect anything from them.
This seems to be a positive step forward, with luck this will take some of the power away from the hard liners and encourage the people to take a more active interest in the countries government.

Under the islamic republic system, every time a supposed reformer has become the president, your idea has been hoped for by the majority of the people but has had no results. This is why this time around, the majority did not vote. As long as the supreme leader holds all the important powers, nothing significant will change in Iran.
Fact is whether the elected leader is a reformist or a hardliner, the true power will always lie in the hands of a supreme leader.
Hopefully this is the first step in a new direction.

He is also very dangerous for the integrity of Iran. He in his previous interviews had constantly talked about, himelf being a Turk( which he is not, he is an Azeri and not a Turk), and someone else being a Kurd, the other being Lur, Gilak, Khouz etc etc. He seems to have this notion that Iran is a country of different ' people ' and not different Iranian people.

Women vote in Iran. Out of 50% of the people who participated in the elections, 44% voted for Saeed Jalili. So please don't speak on behalf of Iranian women. Meanwhile, where in the world have we had elections with 100% participation? In Iran, the highest participation at the peak of hope for changes was 80%. It cannot be said that everyone who did not vote is against the government.

The guy hadn't even been confirmed. I was up at 5 am when the news presenter started the morning bulletin with the news of this guys ' election '. Nothing had been confirmed yet in Iran!!!!! Masoud Pezeshkian is not a reformist. He's admitted many times that he's totally loyal to the supreme leader and he only wants to follow the supreme leader's trajectory.

Yes, more accurately, it means, “of the doctors”. He’s a doctor - I imagine his ancestors were doctors as well, hence choosing that surname ~100 years ago when surnames became required in Iran.

I think people voted for him because they could understand him better in the TV debates and people are hoping that things can improve economically if the sanctions can be removed but it all remains to be seen. He is also half Turkish and half Kurdish so he had a lot of support in those areas in Iran.

Whatever you can truthfully say about Iran but they show and proof that Iran accepts the outcome of an election. Would ever somebody imagine that Iran accepts voter outcome, Trump does not.? BBC gets this wrong (again). In theocratic fascist Iran all candidates are chosen by the the regime's Guardian Council whose job it is to protect this unpopular regime from its people. Pezeshkian gave the impression of being reformist simply to avoid an embarassingly low voter turn out, which is why he was Khomenei's preferred successor.
