- In this video I tackle my fear of chiffon and chemise dresses to make a glorious metallic pink historically inspired confection.
✩ Things mentioned ✩
The fabric was all from Fabric Mart
I used the Musée de la Toile de Jouy Chemise a la Reine as a visual reference for drafting. But I added ruffles for obvious reasons.
The pattern mentioned (not favorably) from an earlier attempt is from this book (this is an affiliate link): amzn.to/3znombB

I adore people making historically inaccurate but fun clothes, if the people back then had access to this much bright pink silk chiffon I have no doubt that somebody would’ve made this
To be fair, if Marie Antoinette had access to hot pink silk chiffon I’m pretty sure she would have worn the heck out of it. ❤️
The fabric isn’t historical accurately but it is definitely spiritually accurate and I feel like that should matter just as much as the historical accuracy of the costume, because clearly there are gonna be people with more interesting takes on popular fashion trends at the time so as long as it vibes with the general vibe at the time then it’s a costume well done!
'Chiffon puckers like a mother...!' Made my day....
Like a mother pucker! 😂
Where's the lie tho? I made two dresses made only out of chiffon and satin and swore to never use that combination ever again.
In case my brilliant illustrations didn’t make it clear - the issue I’ve had with Chemise a la Reine’s in the past is that without a structured base layer, there is nothing to put tension on the material and hold it in place.
The conical shape of stays means the ribbons don’t have a natural ‘notch’ in the body to sit at. *So it is really prone to riding up, causing the sides to poof out - resembling rolls of fat that aren’t there! Then you lose any definition at the waist, and end up looking much wider than you are. I have never felt worse in a historical costume than in my previous chemise dress, which is why I have avoided making another one for so long!
The structured lining, helps prevent that. As do the fitted sides and back - if the gathered (front) panel rides up, you still have the silhouette of a fitted bodice. Unlike the Waugh pattern, which has gathered panels all the way around. This makes it much more complicated to construct, but I like the end result enough to deem it worth it!
*This probably has a lot to do with my body type, and is based on my own experiences. I’ve definitely seen people look GORGEOUS in chemises made from the Waugh pattern and using similar methods. It just doesn’t work on/for me!
Your videos are so helpful to a novice in the costume world I learn a LOT and they're do easy to understand!
@19:30 i believe the word you were looking for was ‘elasticity’!
It was so worth it! It looked great! One thing I wanna mention because you said you were having issues with your sewing machine tension (and skipped stitches?) in another vlog, I noticed that your thread isn't going through the last thread guide and hole. Make sure those are threaded, as those are vital for making sure the thread goes into the fabric correctly. Hopefully that fixes it!
Hey it’s good that you’re talking about this! People who are interested in making a Chemise a la Renie make be incredibly discouraged from continuing forward with making one because the Waugh Pattern doesn’t flatter them right and they want to look as good as others do in their own Chemise a la Renie’s, you talking about it and showing us how you managed to fix their issue with the fit(along with you reminding us the audience that it is a more complicated way to make the Chemise a la Renie) will help a lot of people out, especially with us being able to see that despite the extra work needed to make it fit properly it looks just as good as all the Waugh Pattern Chemise a la Renie’s we’ve seen other costumers create. You look absolutely adorable! And despite the fact that the fabric color is definitely not something the wealthy French population would’ve had access to at the time I feel it still feels historically accurate because it’s extra, which the rococo period loves, and if they did have access to fabric like this back then they definitely would’ve used it for Chemise a la Renie’s and all of their other fancy gowns. It’s got the exact spirit of the era and I feel like that’s what’s most important in historical costuming, if it gives off the same spirit and vibe that would’ve been kicking at the era then that is a costume done excellent!
im rewatching some of your videos again, and i just wanted to leave a comment to say you look absolutely lovely and I hope you can be more kind to yourself.
i know how hard it is to be happy with your body image (ive literally doubled in weight and size since having children and im struggling to lose any meaningful weight or inches) but your body is doing its job.
and you look lovely in everything you've ever shared throughout the years. ❤️
This would have to be the perfect interpretation of Marie Antoinette' s Chemise for the 21st century. The only reason she didn't pick hot pink for hers was that she couldn't get any at the time! Angela every video you release is just wonderful! You're a very talented young woman. Be encouraged that you are making a difference in many people's lives, including mine, and I'm 60!
The styling is just exquisite on this. Your makeup, the wig - you look like a porcelain doll, which despite being a fantastical interpretation also feels so right for the period. Can’t wait to see more, and excited for a Hallowe’en look this year…?
I’m normally not a fan of hot pink, but this color and gown is gorgeous on you! It’s super flattering too, this might be my favorite of all your projects. Great job!
The Push nserts of the marshmallow genuinely made me laugh. I really needed that. 😂
Ahh… the rolled hem foot. Brilliant when it works. Bane of one’s existence when it won’t.
I feel like this version of the dress fits well with that one movie with Kirsten Dunst. Very historical but has the modern color vibe that would fit today
Hello my friend
Yeeeesss!! Absolutely agree!
I really enjoyed watching the construction of this stunning gown. My six year old son really enjoyed counting how many mail varnish colours he could spot. His favourite was when they were purple and green at the same time!
The production value is this video is *chef’s kiss*. The marshmallow has me howling
Angela, your video was posted on my RUclips home page. I am old enough to be your Grandpa, and know absolutely. NOTHING about seeing. I LOVED your video. You have such a gift - for educating and informing. THANK YOU
That is, without a doubt, the pinkest dress I've ever seen and I 10000% approve! I also approve of the poor auto-captions having *no clue* what a chemise a la reine is and calling it things like "Shimmy Celery" which, if I ever make one, is what I'll call it :P
I ordinarily detest pink…but this gown, the color, and on you, is absolutely gorgeous. If I looked even half as good in pink as you do, I’d rethink my stance on disliking the color. I mean, that fabric is just sumptuous.
I’ve always thought the Chemise a la Reine was pretty marshmallowy…but in pink, it’s ethereal! Your talent always blows me away.
I can imagine this beautiful dress in a spooky lace spiderweb fabric.
Girl! You look amazing in hott pink! Wear more wear more!!!
Also:
Angela: "that would involve me getting up, and going down to the basement, and there are spiders down there! So we will never know."
Me: *nods head in complete agreement because spiders are horrifying* "we will never know".
I have been sewing for 65 years and this is a great video about sewing with chiffon. I have been a costumer for decades and this outfit is grezt. Thank you for your video.
I really love this. I agree with you that you need an understructure on dresses like this! Also, your little drawing was so funny. The final dress is gorgeous
It is like Barbie, but make it 18th century. What a fabulous combination of fabric and style! Thank you for the tips for sewing the dreaded chiffon, they were very helpful.
This is so lovely! Everything, the dress, the colour of it, the colour of the hair, it is gorgeous! You look like you are made for this time period. 💗
That dress is THE most gorgeous watermellon pink and the best way to close out the worst summer in quite some time. This color makes me happy. Put a smile on my face.
I love the colour and love the fit too. Sewstine is making a bright pink polonaise and I definitely support making historical garments in bright and wonderful colours bc it's just so much fun!
This is so gorgeous on you!!! I'm obsessed!
Holly wow! That looks amazing!
What a wonderful shade of pink!
Oh this is gorgeous. I love love love the color!!!!
This is just so delightful!
The costume is really beautiful and I can tell it was a challenge in many ways. Thanks for the video!
This dress is beautiful. I love seeing, and hearing, your experience while sewing these beautiful garments and can appreciate the hatred for certain fussy fabrics. I just bought some silk and am terrified to do anything with it knowing how difficult it is probably going to be.
Again, BEAUTIFUL JOB! 😍
Most silk isn't nearly that temperamental but chiffon of any type is a PIA.
Perfection!!! Love the color!!
Beautiful, and so fun! I love your blend of historical and fantasy!!
SO PRETTY!!!
The second I saw the thumbnail I think my brain short-circuited a lil this is absolutely stunnnnnnning! And I love the styling of the finished look!
And the editing 😂
(But honestly what else could I expect from my fave sew-tuber)
I absolutely love this pink material!❤
I think that this gown is absolutely gorgeous. I love, love, the pink fabric and it looks fabulous on you. You did a fantastic job and the photos are stunning!

Okay I ADORE this concept and the execution!
love the fabric and the color!! your so good!!
It’s beautiful and fun love this color!!
Its so gorgeous!
I love everything about this omg
Absolutely stunning!
That's really pretty! Yes, chiffon is hard to work with, but so worth it! Also I applaud using elastic in place of drawstrings because that makes so much sense. Definitely doing that if I ever make one for myself.
GORGEOUS!!!
Stunning!
It's adorable!
Stunning result! And love the neck ruffle.
Your commentary on this is perfect! What a fabulous make Angela! 🥰
So so so in love with this!
Love it, and shocking pink is fabulous.💖
Stunningly beautiful. Perfectly modeled.

What a delightful and joy filled project and video. Thank you.
It's so pretty!
I almost never understand what's happening in your videos since I don't sew, but it's hypnotic to watch the garments all come together.
So cute and the hat and makeup perfect.
omigosh--it is magnificent. i love the color!!!!! i love the delicate little metallic stripe. i love the ruffles. the dainty little rolled hem is perfect--sharp, clean, and almost ruffly in and of itself. the sash is perfect, too. and you look so gorgeous in it, with your hat, make-up, and wig. i think you're brilliant for sneaking all the right structure into such a diaphanous, floaty-looking dress! so flattering!!
This fabric and colour is so perfect!! Amazing work!!
you look AMAZING in pink! I am so envious of you! Amazing look! Go you!
Freaking gorgeous is absolutely right!! Beautiful work!!

It turned out ethereally gorgeous.
Loved the tip about basting before cutting to size!
It’s so beautiful 😭😭😭😭
Love the pink!
It's gorgeous.
I think this is one of my most favorite of your creations. I love everything about it. I cannot wait to see your next video!
Love the Pink!
“But I cannot remember and checking it would require me to stand up, and go into the basement and there are spiders down there, so we’ll never know the true width of this hem.” Why is no one talking about how adorable this is??
Stunning
Basting before trimming is BRILLIANT!!!
This dress is gorgeous as are all the other garments you have made well done Angela xxx.
this is absolutely stunning on you! what a fabulous fabric choice
Just gorgeous
This pink looks so good on you!!
The blue tape trick is so smart! thank you for sharing it, I might use it in the future
You did beautiful job on this dress
OH THAT’S BEAUTIFUL!!!!
You look amazing! It’s perfect for your skin tone!
Wow this came out beautifully!
So pretty! Love the dress so much. Also love your humor. ❤️😆
Amazing seeing this whole process! You do a great job explaining your entire construction from beginning to end! Learning from your instruction is one thing but fighting with the sewing machine I feel is half the battle for me right now 😅🌷💐
Beautiful!!
This is incredibly beautiful and so skilled anyway. Impressive and gorgeous!!
