I don't think any of the original lyrics are "nonsensical". they're poetical and associate several mythical/historical/philosophical themes in a non-structured style, much like the anime itself. the songs talk about angels, demons, emperors, art, life and death (Eros and Thanatos), virtuality (in opposition to actuality), androgyny and the universe. all of these weren't randomly put in the lyrics, they're totally related to the series concept. the beauty of SKU though is that you aren't supposed to "understand" it; there is no true interpretation to the show, and each person that watches it is affected in a different way. the one thing I can say is that none of the characters are "persons". they are like stars that watched countless lives and deaths across time and space, virtual stars (as in the second ending song) performing in a strange theatre with masks that represent no singular man or woman, but rather images of history played and invested by men and women -- a hero, a prince, a witch, a brother, a fiancee, and the many other roles in the anime. in my own perception, the plot of SKU doesn't "mean" anything, but it "works" like a mysterious machine (machinery is also a theme in the lyrics), like the floating, spinning, upside-down Castle of Dios.

It was from this song that I learned the word 劇場 when I was like 12. When I finally sat down to study Japanese formally, there were soooo many words that were buried in my head that I didn’t even realize I knew until they jumped at me out of nowhere and then all of a sudden, the song I’d heard the word in would start playing in my head.

Is it just me or did these lyrics just describe the plot of the entire show?

i think it's how miki sees the world , he's clever so he knows whats up, but also gets stuck in the death & rebirth part i guess?

Is it me or the lyrics don't properly translate what it's actually saying?

!!! I'm so excited whenever I see you've uploaded a new video, thank you so much for doing this project !!! I think it's wonderful that the words fit into the time allotted, you do wonderful work. I would love to see more of this in the future :') (but also you have no obligation to and take your time haha) Best Wishes!

Quiviria Thanks so much for the comment! It really makes me feel good about doing this. Sometimes I feel like writing such loose translations, taking so many liberties, might put people off. I certainly took a lot of liberties with this one in order to make a more coherant song. Glad to hear that people actually like this form of lyric video! I only wish I could do legitimate english covers of these songs! That would be the dream, but I have to settle for this for now. :P
Taking several months between videos feels inexcusable though. I'm going to really try to upload more regularly in the coming year. Don't want to leave this project unfinished.

i always wanna sing along but the words go too fast for me! so here's a transcription. love this by the way!
    Prologue:
A choir of spirits dancing as one
    First Act:
Characters play their parts in a fantasy
    Sometimes they're crying,
    Sometimes dying,
    All for the drama
    This play will never end
    As they spin,
    Transforming,
    Growing their withered wings
    In a tortured masquerade
Aaaa, do they know it's all a dream?
    Second Act:
    Constantly longing for eternal life
    Third Act:
Knowing it's futile, and yet searching on
    History and alchemy
    Ancient answers
    Desperate clawing ad mortem
    Only death pays for life
    To be immortal
Is it really worth it all?
Aaaa, spiraling down to the end
    My, my, my, my
    My, my, my, my
    Grand, never-ending passion-play
From the ashes of the stage
The ballad of life and death
    Exeunt and that's the end!
Death, rebirth, death, rebirth, death, rebirth, death, rebirth
Death, rebirth, death, rebirth, death, rebirth, death, rebirth
Death, rebirth, death, rebirth, death, rebirth, death rebirth!

Watched this anime for the first time in 2001 when i was 11 years old. Now im almost 30 watched it o couple of times, and i still cannot fully understand some of the symbolism & stuff behind it all, until this day im still analizing the series when I can & always find something new. Superficial people say its about teen age, growing & feminism but NO, its pretty occultist & deep.
This anime is totally a beautiful & refined work of art. I dont know japanesse so thanks for lyrics.

Utena is one of those works of fiction that everytime you watch it you gonna realize something new, no matter how many times you watched it before

to be fair, it arguably IS about teen age, growing and feminism. But those aren‘t automatically shallow things or make people „superficial“ for talking about them. They're just some of the many subjects that are intertwined in the plot.

That's so stupid. Utena uses occultism to say a message about feminism and growing up.

it's an anime about not wanting to grow up made by a guy who had some esoteric tastes. it's not that complicated. people make "weird" things and this is one of them. occultism is a pretty broad term for a few references to gnosticism.

1:40 Can it be "舞舞舞舞" which means "dance, dance, dance, dance" instead of "my, my, my, my"?
I think it makes more sense

      Japanese word "mai-mai" means snails
the lyrics of this song says Spira Mirabilis is a bug related spiral or swirl
so "mai mai mai mai" can be snails sung as scat-like
      I'm Japanese speaker
