    Thank you. I am a new plant mom and literally knew nothing about how to keep a plant alive. This video helps! :)

    Great info Ashley. One thing I do with my tap water, I have a splitter on my aquarium air tubing and an extra tube with an airstone that I can turn on and off. I put my big container of water there and put the airstone in at least overnight. Chlorine and some other chemicals only outgas at the surfaee areas so by adding a bubbling airstone the water moves and chemicals have a better chance to outgas. Another thing I notice with my plants that like to get dry. dry soil often becomes hydrophobic, so the water can run out the bottom through without the soil actually absorbing the water. I often "pre-water," watering just a little so that the water has enough time to re-hydrate the soil a bit (maybe 5-10 minutes) then go back and water regularly. Also sometimes with plants that like to dry out the rootball can shrink a bit and pull away from the sides of the pot. So you have a plant that keeps acting like it needs water, but what's happening is everytime you water, the water is just taking the path of least resistance and running down the sides of the pot and out the bottom without really getting into the roots. You may need to rework the soil a bit to close up those fine gaps.

      This is so helpful Cleo, thank you! I would love to experiment with an air stone. I think you’ve motivated me! I’d love to grow more plants in water only and I think an air stone would help a lot with this.

      @@LifewithAshleyAnita One of my next big experiments is a a pothos filter for my aquarium. You basically take a long plastic planter and put on a shelf over your aquarium. You rig it so that a small water pump circulates water up and through a bed of leca. You can then root pothos or whatever you like. Its great because it creates an active hydroponics system that takes advantages of the nutrients in the tank water, keeps the water oxygenated and also works as a biological filter. So the fish and the plants both benefit.

    I use brita water pitchers and wonder if I even need to do that. This summer I moved many of my plants outside so they got watered with cold hose water from the tap. Not one showed any signs of distress (even my white fusion calathea, the diva). I guess the chlorine levels aren't that high in my tap. I think it takes longer than an hour for chlorine to evaporate. As a fish keeper I've always heard the rule 24 hours, but I guess it would depend on how many ppm chlorine is in the water. Also, some people have chloramine in the water and that won't evaporate. I do use distilled water for my venus fly traps...the secret to not killing them!

    Wow! Just now found your videos! Why oh why haven’t you popped up in my feed before? L?? In just 2 videos, I’ve learned so much (especially about the watering). I changed over to bottom watering because of a fungus gnat infestation that just won’t stop. When I switched over, I didn’t know to water the plants separately, so the infestation goes on & on! Thank you SOO much for this video! I’m in the process now of changing out the soil & will water each plant in their grow pot directly in their cache pot instead of taking the grow pots out & watering them together in huge lasagna pans (I have a lot of plants & thought it would speed up the process-but actually makes it harder). I’m going to watch all your videos now to see what else I’m doing wrong! Thanks again. You are a wealth of info!!

    Never reuse water that drained from one plant and give it to another. Not just pests like Ashley said, but fungal and bacterial pathagens spread really bad that way. That's another reason why I try not to touch my plants too much because touching one then another can spread illness.

    • @GeorgiaGrown90
      @GeorgiaGrown90 2 года назад +4

      1000% agree. I've seen so many tiktoks/other youtube videos deliberately place pots on stands above one another and just water one plant and let the water trickle down into the bottom plant and I ALWAYS cringe at it. I guess diseases and overwatering aren't real things to them

    Things that took me too long to learn were:: moisture meters don’t work on extremely chunky aerated soil they always tell you to water. most water companies use chloramine now as opposed to chlorine. Chloramine does not evaporate when left out. I buy RO water from my local fish store for $.50 a gallon as long as I bring my own empty milk jugs.

    Great tips!
    Especially bottom watering to deter fungus gnats. It takes a little more time..but I think it’s worth it (however, mosquito bits are definitely on hand for “tea” 😉)
    Yes, well draining soil! I finally understood what that meant about a month ago (20 plants later 🤪 )as well as how helpful it is to make sure the pot has good drainage. If necessary, I drill a couple more holes in the bottom of the pot to be sure(lol..the water meter is my bff😁)
    Thanks a BUNCH🌿🍃🌱

      Whichever way you water has no impact on fungal gnats. Fungus gnats will still breed no matter if the soil is moist or dry.

    Hi Ashley!!! Thanks for the info. What can I do for my pothos?? It has a white fuzzy looking mold kind of thing. I heard it's good and I scooped out all of it and added cinnamon. Now it's back again. What is your recommendation?? Plant looks good still it's been about 3 weeks since I scooped out the white fuzz and it's back again on the cinnamon. I haven't given it water since I've placed the cinnamon on top. Help please. Thanks so much. I love you fungus gnat solution. Works very well for me. Ty. You saved my plants. I do bottom watering now since I love to overeater. 🙄 Lol. Happy new year by the way!!!

    I notice your hanging plants. when you water them, does the water drip down out of the pot? Also should pothos be placed in direct sunlight or simi dark room? What's a good place to have a pothos. I tried to place one of my pothos near a window but it's always curling up and dying ughhh. I thought these plants would be so easy to care for but to me I don't have a green thumb. I water my pothos and it dies. I don't water it and it still dies. I'm so sad.
