May Allah take my country of Turkey away from secularism. It's truly sad to see what we've become. Also, another historical fact.
In 1402, Timur managed to defeat the Ottoman army near Ankara due to Sultan Bayazid's miscalculations and impulsive strategies. The Ottomans learnt a lot from that, such as not think oneself invinsible.
Later on because of that they became much stronger than the Timurides. Though Timur didn't completely defeat them, it's important to understand that such defeats are Islamically important to remind you not to be too proud.

If you're referring to the Turkish/Ottoman definition, for example, where bey is (son) and effendi is (educated, well respected, nobleman). I think in this case the brother was the son of some tribal chief. Not entirely sure. Somewhere along the lines they started throwing gentleman in the definition/usage as well. It definitely fits the definition this guy used to explain GHAZI.
