      There was plenty of ways where black could slip. And then they would be checkmated or a piece down, instead of a pawn.

      Reminds me of Tal or Rashid, insane combinations *only* to get into a winning endgame, but that's just how chess at higher levels work, you can't expect 2600 elo people to not spot a mate or lose material (well maybe in faster time controls you can but still)

    This game is shockingly precise for fast chess. The players literally played like stockfish 16 until move 26.

    It's rarely a good idea to willingly take "free" pawns and go into your opponent's prep, especially in lower time format. But honestly as the audience, I'm glad it happened. I'd love to see more riskier games like this!

    This was by far my favorite game in a long time! I thought it was going to end so much sooner, but Alireza really fought well, until he was out of time.

    WHENever i see an MVL game i like to think i understand his moves. when i look at MC, FC and some of the otherss their moves are a complete mystry to me

    Alireza took some (reasonable?) criticism for farming rating points to qualify for the Candidates. Then he didn’t have a great tournament. He seems to have regained focus and is returning to form as one of the most dangerous chess players. Very enjoyable to watch. Great game by MVL.

      @@jestice75 he won 2 classical games in the super united tournament and also did well in Norway chess. His only classical loss was against magnus which was quite unfortunate. i would say he has regained form after the candidates

    I've bookmarked this game. Never played the Ruy Lopez because I assumed it had been played into the ground. So many great tactics to remember.

    PLEASE agad it's been 9 months! 2023 USCC - Atousa almost beat Carissa Yip, the eventual winner!
    Carissa was losing most of the game. Atousa just blundered in the end.

      Wesley got the win, Ian flagged, the video doesn't leave any room for ambiguity, the only thing is that Wesley noticed it after a couple of moves, when he was in a completely losing position.
      I think Ian messed with Wesley by knocking down a piece on Wesley's time on the second day of blitz, but it wasn't in a time trouble situation, and it seemed to be mostly in good spirit between the two.
