    What I do like about these small synths is not just are they PACKED with features, but it now forces more synth companies to release great synths at competitive prices which is great for the consumer.

    I just got a minifreak as a starter synth for my daughter. I think it sounds great and has an excellent feature set. The hydrasynth might edge it in a few areas but for a starter unit I wanted something with as much knob per function (+/- shift) and as little menu diving as possible. I tried it out in store and came to the conclusion that the freak is an awful lot of fun in a little package and at a competitive price (take note TE). I had looked at several Behringer options and Korg ‘logues but the included effects, the feature set and the interface kept bringing me back to the Freak. I also hope that they expand with a vocoder and wave table engines as firmware updates in the near future as that would really ice the cake. It has the ability to go quite deep or as shallow as you’d like if starting out and can route external audio through it. Their mod matrix interface is also very user friendly. Nice work Arturia.
    Thanks Starsky, always enjoy your content.

    Fantastic video! Hybrids - both new and old - are definitely having their day in the sun. I love the Microfreak (fantastic for coming up with excellent original sounds) and the Super 6. Ambika is an absolutely superb machine for those lucky enough to find one or who are willing to build. In terms of "vintage", the Kawai K3 sounds absolutely stunning and begs for new patch creation. I wonder of they will release a desktop module version? If they do, I think I’d get one. As I posted already, I’ve bought a Minifreak for my daughter but I’d love to have one to tinker with too especially if a module was a little cheaper, it’d be a relatively easy decision for me. Interested to see how the build quality holds up over time. And on the price point, agreed; the Freaks are a lot of synth for the money and the likes of Teenage Engineering would do well to look at this model. Their pocket operators are great little cheap modules but their “higher end” units don’t seem to represent value to me. Certainly not compared to something like a Freak.

    • @duderson
      @duderson 2 года назад +3

      Completely disagree.. the prophet VS isn't even an analog synth. There's nothing inherent to prevent a VST or other digital synth from being identical. If you think something is missing from the sound, just run the synth through a vintage preaml

    • @sub-jec-tiv
      @sub-jec-tiv 2 года назад

      Also the chorusing is a huge difference on the 1st sound. It’s stealing the test. He could really have taken the synths with no effects, and added them through the same analog chorus pedal for a more accurate test.
      Personally i prefer Prophet filter to almost anything, except maybe classic Moog. So i get there being a difference between the Prophet and SEM filters.

    The Mini is an amazing synth in a compact form that delivers great sound bang per buck.
    People complain about the keys, they work fine, I have a KSP and have no problem using them.
    Use a different keybed to control it and your problems are solved but the synth delivers on all levels imo.
    The sequencer is top notch and goes that extra level, teh lack of PCB keybed was smart as it would alienate those who wants to use this as a regular keybed but just cannot play PCB keybeds.
    People complain too much when solutions already exist.

    Thanks for the comparison, Starsky Carr! It's really valuable. And the design of VS' and MiniFreak's matrices looks similar!
    Yes, MiniFreak def. need a deeper modulation! I'm not sure if it's somehow limited by the filters. Maybe they've balanced that for the mod. matrix so it will not give some platos... But actually from a pure physical point of view - nothing stops Arturia to make their filters sound wider! If it's not intentionally... My bad thoughts leads me to the possible competition with PolyBrute :D Marketing managers actually can be crazy up to the stupid boundaries.

    • @StarskyCarr
      @StarskyCarr  2 года назад +1

    I love your comparison videos. They helped me a lot to make the right purchase once! Now I want to buy some physical synthesizer, so that I can improvise more in music production. I can't decide between korg minilogue xd and mini freak. Minifreak features are simply fantastic: aftertouch, full integration with vst and audio in, thanks to which we can use the synthesizer as an effects processor for an external audio source, are wonderful solutions. The only thing I couldn't convince myself of - and I know that I have an unpopular opinion here - was the sound. The timbre of the instrument always seemed to me characteristically rough, sharp in the high registers, digitally metallic, flat and empty in the lower registers. I was curious if it was just my impression, and your comparison with the legendary analog confirmed that unfortunately there is something to it. It may be that in the context of a mix, where certain frequencies are cut anyway, the minifreak will be universal enough to be used in most genres of music. I'm counting on it, because I really like the idea and price of this device. ;) Does anyone have any opinions on the minilogue xd, in this context? Greetings and thanks for the video!

      I don’t think you’d regret buying a Minifreak. I think they’re great - and the integration with a computer is superb. But I am a big fan of that Korg VCO tone. The xd is also really flexible with the extra digital oscillator and effects … so it’s a hard choice. You’ll be happy with either, but for raw tone I’d go with the XD if that floats your boat more

      @@StarskyCarr Thanks for the advice. I downloaded the demo plugin for minifreak and finally followed my heart/ears and bought a used minilogue xd. A few problems with midi were like a cold shower, but like you said, I don't regret it. There's something magical about the sound and workflow, it brings you to a state that's hard to achieve working in a DAW. To the point that it's hard to be productive, you just want to have fun. :D I can already hear that XD is a great choice for lo fi styles, retro sounds, a bit dirtier arrangements, emotional introversion. Then the synth sings. Minifreak is the opposite, sharp, bold, modern, precisely intellectual. Both can do both tricks if forced (and minifreak is the leader here), but their soul is probably somewhere else. Probably best to have both, for different occasions. Thanks for your help and good luck with the channel! :)

    Interesting and fun comparison, and definitely a fun video as always.
    Specifically commenting on the bass section starting at 6:15. There's a vastly different filter design on the Sequential as compared to the Arturia. As you say, they're different instruments. Sequential's 4-pole filter has a very distinct sound, and the I believe the Arturia is a 2-pole, so no matter what, even with an identical envelope shape, you're going to get a distinctly different sound between them. That would definitely account for the different in the way the filter cuts -- that difference in depth. The question is whether or not you can get sounds that satisfy you.
    I agree it would be really nice to get that user wave option from the MicroFreak added ....

      Yeah that’s my favourite on the VS. Really simple, but there’s something about that chorus and the way the envelop falls on those notes that’s special. The prophet seems to have some detuning modulation in its tails, compared to the minifreak where the tail is a lot more stable. Is there any way to get a modulation on the tail only rather than the overall patch?

    • @StarskyCarr
      @StarskyCarr  2 года назад +2

      I think thats the envelopes tbh. They're both detuned precisely and don't introduce any slop or LFO.. the modulation is the eating between the 2 oscillators. But the release curve on the VS is somewhere between the MF's percussive and default values. If I create a longer release on the MF it doesn't sound as plucky overall.. but by reducing it the VS sounds like its got a longer tail (it does).. but reducing that affects the transient etc... which is why comparing like-for-like doesn't make sense here. On the MF you could maybe make it mod only on the tail with a bit of lateral thinking (or at least after a certain time using the shaper LFO) but not really.

    • @speakingcolors
      @speakingcolors 2 года назад

      @@StarskyCarr Thanks, yeah I always thought the "aftertouch" would be "after you release the key" and we could use that to modulate only the release / tail of the sound, but it appears not. I tried a lot to modulate only the release from the ADSR on my Cobalt8 and on a few VSTs, it seems like it's difficult. But I believe a great deal of why that VS sounds so good, is the release has a modulation in it while the sound when played is really clear. That difference can make a huge difference overall imo.

    The Minifreak's patch is simply not using OSC detune, the filter envelope is not the same, velocity is not the same, and the VS has a chorus enabled, and it doesn't sound like the Minifreak has its chorus enabled. For such a simple patch, the Minifreak should have EASILY done a sound from a VS.

    • @StarskyCarr
      @StarskyCarr  2 года назад

      Oscillators are matched exactly. Osc 2 is detuned exactly the same one both to within 1 cent. Chorus is on the Minifreak. I video all this and edit it out as most viewers believe me when I say they’re matched as closely as I can get them. The extra 20 minutes is rather boring to watch. The major difference is the envelope, which makes a huge difference between the tail/transient. Chorus’s can’t be matched perfectly either.

    Synth forums, and musical instrument forums in general, are full of antiquity bias. I'd hazard the guess that 99% of the people on them have never played or even heard one of those instruments in person, in a space where they could 'judge' the sound. The bias is based on rhetoric and something they heard on a recording somewhere. The first time we experience anything, a sound, a taste a feeling, it sets a standard in our mind. We think 'that's the best or the way it's supposed to sound/taste/feel' and then spend the rest of our lives complaining that nothing compares. It's human nature and it is flawed beyond repair. Instead of spending insane amounts of money trying to recreate that initial experience we would be better served reveling in all of the new possibilities and sounds available to us today. Musicians used what was available at the time, we need to do the same. Create music today that will be the classics of tomorrow and let the past be a foundation to build on by being progressive instead of regressive.
