My secnond theory that - maybe developements that created game many years ago - didnt rember everything perfectly. Because they maded this game many years ago. I sure - nobody will rember perfectly things which happened 5 years ago and more. Also masas demo version not loops. And developements said another myth. Which got busted after years that - "dust hill" name of removed desert level from screenshot. Because they mistaked it with different desert - which become aquatic ruin in final.
@@sayaka_miki353 Hidden Palace zone definitely would have used the theme that eventually became the Mystic Cave 2 player, and the unused track was for the cutscene, so I agree with you there. I don't quite follow what you mean with the desert level(s) though? My understanding (although theory) is that Dust Hill fits the mockup for the desert stage, and most likely would have used Aquatic Ruin's theme (has the wild west whistle). With that in mind, Sand Shower used Oil Ocean's theme (more of a middle-eastern sounding desert theme). I'm not sure if there's any real artwork or anything for Sand Shower though.

In the simon wai prototype you can see that aquatic ruin is not designed for water sections. Most of them just not here. But very few that exits leads into bottomless pits. Neo death egg(level from document, the future of death egg) uses the same id as aqutic ruins do. And "neo green hill" does not fits this stage. And sounds like just a edited version of "neo death egg". Same as "dust hill" does not fits mystic cave. They probably moved aquatic ruin. And gived old name to mystic cave. This not placeholder, because title cards from SEP14 prototype is a thing. But they changed it because it's not fits. Also. Sonic 3 reuses some rejected sonic 2 concets. And it's have level "desert palace" which looks like nothing, but aquatic ruin. While sandopolis looks like nothing, but sand shower.

Would this be due to repurposing the level, or would it maybe just be they simply hadn't gotten to that stage in development? To be fair I think Aquatic Ruins theme does fit a desert, at least the Masa demo tape version fits for a wild west theme. I've seen a video showing the idea that Desert Palace has similar designs to Aquatic Ruins as well, and someone commented somewhere that supposedly Endless Mine used some assets that originally would have been for Tropic Blue, but not sure how likely that would be. Certainly seems reasonably likely the scrapped designs were recycled a bit, especially since Cyber City was confirmed to be level 3 of Spinball.
