  • The middle of sugar beet harvest is here, and that's when the grind sets in big time. Harvesting conditions are good and that means we do not stop. 24/7 harvest on our family farm wears on us, but we wouldn't want it any other way.
    Enjoy a "beet's eye view" of a sugar beet harvester in this video as well as some tasty food, breakdowns, and some of the many details that go into operating a sugar beet harvester.

    Howdy and jak se máš! (Czech for "How are you?")
    We're a sugar beet farmin’ family in the Red River Valley of North Dakota! Our farm specializes in growing sugar beets, hard red spring wheat, sunflowers, corn, soybeans, and various types of dry edible beans. The legacy currently consists of my dad, my uncle, my two older brothers, and I (Beet Farmin Mitch).
    I am a 6th generation family farmer recently graduating with college degrees in both Agricultural Economics and Crop and Weed Sciences. Enjoy as I showcase our operations everyday work, grow as a young farmer, be a goofball, and walk out the most important thing to me. My love for King Jesus!
    My hope is that you may be entertained and spurred on to grow in your passion and knowledge for all things agriculture!

    I will mention this channel for sure, I've been farming for almost 30 years down here in NEW ZEALAND, always amazes me to watch a new method/way of harvesting around the world, we are middle of summer at Christmas and Winter is July, Look I'm so sorry to see you have to run those horrible Red tractors as it is the International Colour for Stop. Green means go.. lol. Hi Jenny. Tractor dates/Chopper dates has been my life too. I've heard about this God thing you Americans talk about, up in the sky or something, I may look into that as it would be nice to have someone to blame for breakdowns n stuff.
    What a great happy, guy you are Mitch, that smile is addictive, absolute outstanding camera work. Keep up the good work mate from New Zealand.

    What cauht my eye at the start, was the lifting wheels for the beets . They might be bigger with the higher horse power tractors , but they are the same design we had back in the 1960's

    Are self propelled beet harvesters common in your area? Your method with different tractors and pull type harvesters is pretty much extinct here in Europe since the early 90s, since then it‘s self propelled for the most part.

    • @brentbarclay9990
      @brentbarclay9990 Год назад +1

      Self propelled are very rare in the US, I think part of it is that width isn't as important. 12 row is pretty standard now in ND/MN, I would think that cost is another factor because the the beet harvesters are only used for the harvest where the tractors can be used all year.

    Great video Mitch! How are sugar prices for this years beet crop? With grain prices high I was wondering if they pulled the price of sugar beets up

    • @beetfarminmitch
      @beetfarminmitch  Год назад

      Thanks Onion Friend! I love onions by the way hahaha,
      Sugar has gone up in price, but not nearly as much as grain commodities. The US domestic sugar market is generally more consistent than the grain market.
      The sugar market has increased some, but the grain markets have sharply rose. They aren’t tied together as close.
      That’s for pure white granulated sugar. The sugar beets also have other agri-products such as beet pulp pellets, those prices follow the grain markets, and have seen jumps in price.

    Why do you grow high-sugar beets *AND* high-tonnage beets. There must be 2 tier pricing. Is it an even trade-off?

  • @bladewiper
    @bladewiper Год назад

    I am sure you have mentioned this before, but how do you know how many acres of beets to grow. Is there a quote system ? Hope things continue to go well for you.

    • @beetfarminmitch
      @beetfarminmitch  Год назад +2

      So the company we grow for is a cooperative meaning the farmers/shareholders own it. You have to be an “active farmer” to own shares.
      You can either rent out the shares to other farmers or you can grow them yourself. One share =.76%-.83% of an acre (that number can change year after year a little bit). That percentage is called the “planting tolerance”. If you plant closer to that .83% there is a higher chance you have to leave beets in the field if the company ends up having too many.
      So for example. Say a farmer owns 273 shares and they plant .83%. That means they can plant 273 (shares) x .83% (max planting tolerance) = 226.59 acres of beets.
      Say they rent 22 shares from another farmer and they also plant those at .83%. That’s an additional 18.26 acres. 22 x .83 = 18.26
      Total between what that farmer owns and what that farmer can rent is 226.59 (owned) + 18.26 (rented) = 244.85 planted acres.

    How much sugar do you get from one ton of beets.

    • @beetfarminmitch
      @beetfarminmitch  Год назад

      Great question! It can vary depending on the crop but we can say .17% can be pretty close.
      2000 pounds x .17% = 340 pounds of pure white sugar.
      About 9,100 pounds per acre is another way to look at it.

  • @sawboneiomc8809
