I love how Ford and GM didn't update their sedans at all for over 10 years and then when they weren't selling said "buyers must not want sedans anymore"
IDK at what point was it decided that families must have a truck because a sedan is too small. Most of us grew up in families that only had sedans and we are just fine
Because people believed that they need more room than they actually use or buy useless things that they have no use for. Just watch though, sometime down the road someone is gonna make a social media post as to why a sedan is great and the pendulum will swing back and sedans will be the thing again.
The problem with mid size sedans is their priced so close to compact crossovers that most people just step up to that or step down to a compact sedan because they have grown in size that they are what a midsize was 10 years ago.
So basically the only American non-EV sedans are the 2 Cadillacs and the upcoming Dodge Charger. It's highly unlikely they would outsell the Camry, Accord and Altima. Safe to say Japan won the sedan war that started in the 1980's
altima is also dead and i personally won't count dodge charger as a sedan. It is notchback/hatchback because it has a hatch not a trunk. I will not call that a sedan kind of like i will not call a prius a sedan.
Sad to see another sedan go since the market is so oversaturated with SUVs that all perform and look the same. All for "safety" when those SUVs are worse than sedans in terms of safety
I own a Gen 7 (2010) Malibu LTZ. After 110,000 miles, I must say it might be one of the finest sedans I’ve ever owned. I won’t list all the accolades of the car, but I think Chevy (and GM) is making a huge mistake ridding itself of a decent vehicle for those of us that are not going hybrid, or full EV. That leaves Cadillac with the last remaining sedan in the GM fleet. Sad. 😢
I only found out recently the Malibu used to be offered as a hybrid, and it used a lot of the Volt components. In 2019 182 hp & 277lbs ft torque. 49/43 mpg, and could get up to 55mph before the gas motor kicked in (or for a handful of miles). I know their interiors were plast-tastic but as a 30k midsize hybrid sedan (even at 2019 prices) that seems fairly competitive for that year. Imagine what a bit more development effort could have made it.
Americans: We want affordable cars!!! Car Company: Here’s our latest sedan and it’s under $25k!!! Americans: Eww not that!!! Company: So what do you want? Americans: I need it to be big enough to fit 4 full size adults even though I’m going to be the only one in 90% of the time. I also need it to sit at least 8 inches off the ground. It also needs to be fast, like I need the 0-60 to be under 7 seconds because that’s important for some reason. I also want real leather seats I’m too good for cloth and I want all the latest tech available. Also I need to a huge cargo area because I want to bring more stuff along with me. You know what might as well throw in a 3rd row that’ll I’ll never use but you never right? Company: And you want all this for 25k? Americans: Yup Company: Get out.
Bigger story everyone is missing is the least expensive nonPickup vehicle sold by GM built in the US is the low volume $36k Cadillac CT4. All other less expensive are made in S Korea, Mexico, Canada or China.
That leaves us with 5 mainstream midsize ICE sedans left, the midsize sedan segment is dying faster than I thought almost as fast as the subcompact and large sedans. Altima is next in 2026, and Sonata in 2028. I wonder why the Ford and Chevy keep discontinuing good selling vehicles for EVs nobody buys. It seems like they are trying to go bankrupt, but my god Jim Farley and Mary Barbra should be replaced because they are running their companies into the ground.

I remember as a kid the 1970 Chevrolet Chevelle Malibu SS in dark blue with white strips a young guy in my home town used to drive. I was going to get one 3 years ago but it was 3K over budget in the trim I wanted. They already killed the Cruze and that sent me to a Civic (which wasn’t my first choice) The Malibu when I test drove it with the 2.0T was awesome. Drove the 1.5T rental and it was surprisingly peppy. Today it can’t compete with the Camry and accord because older platform, no hybrid option but pricing one fully loaded is a value (2LT with every feature at 34k) sad it’s not going to redone as I feel GM were to bring it back built from the ground up with an optional Hybrid powertrain would do it justice. But oh well.

Thank you for the video. I will say that Buick in China still has sedans. Buick in the United States does not. Buick in China has LaCrosse, Regal and Verano. Ford got away from sedans in the United States as they have Taurus in China and the Middle East and Lincoln Zephyr in China. I miss Pontiac too. I really wish people would stop dismissing Oldsmobile. It'll need effort put into it for a new update to be competitive with the new hybrid Accord and Camry. And GM apparently isn't interested. Even after announcing they need to shift to some hybrids, and this used to be offered as one
So where was I when Chevy axed the Impala? The SS short run was wild though I don't care to own the new ones but I also don't want them to go away. Corvette better never leave, I'm telling you though Toyota fan-living it rn though- COME ON Stout small hybrid truck
That is so strange to me. I lived from Sep 21 to Oct 23 in AZ and TX and I swear I saw more Malibus than Accords, Altimas or Camrys. In fact, the company I used to work for gave Malibus and Equinox as company cars. Is a shame.
My high school PE teacher had 2008 Chevy Malibu LT its was a nice car til 2-3 years she trade it in got herself a 2013 Ford Edge SEL remind you this was during my high school years from 2009-13
Chevy is giving up all of sedans to giveway on SUV, CUV and Pickups. Chevy, Subaru, VW, and Ford is following Mitsubishi's idea to kill Compact Hatchbacks/Sedans and Midsize Sedans to replace CUV and SUV for higher sales(SUVs are high risk on Incidents and Pedestrian Collisions).
Yep. Trucks and SUVs have been the top sellers for Ford and GM. The only midsize sedans remaining are from the South Korean and Japanese automakers. Sonata, K5, Camry (though now all-hybrid), Accord (top 3 trims hybrid-only), G70, TLX (though I view it as a sports sedan), and Altima (though it might not be around in the future).
Got to rent a Bu a few years ago, and the vehicle's been the same since 2016 for the most part; while every other sedan has got a new cycle, GM never did anything with it since it was a perennial fleet special...if anything, its pretty spacious and had Carplay/Android Auto early on.
Just had one for a rental. 2024 model, only 550 miles on it. Rental spec with anemic four banger. Trunk space decent and room for five. Build quality was actually nice with no panel gaps and decent paint. Biggest issue was engine. What a dog. When I think of Malibu, I think of rental car or traveling salesman.
They should have just updated it. I believe there are still plenty of people looking for a reasonably priced non suv . I feel down the road G.M. will bring it back.
How much of 150k - is FLEET sales? Probably 90-100k. Thus - this proves nobody wants a sedan except Hertz or Avis car rental stores. YOU DRIVE AN SUV 🚙 while typing that comment out right?
In 2 years chevy will no longer be able to use the Camaro in nascar based on the rules. Without a sedan in production, they may have to leave the sport.
Other than the Corvette, Chevy doesn’t build a single desirable vehicle. Chevy as a brand name is garbage: it carries the connotation of presenting under-engineered, outdated, embarrassing-to-own, last choice vehicles
When I was at the NY Auto Show, I thought the VW Taos was very appealing if you're looking for a small daily driver. It has a competitive price and lots of pizazz. The Malibu already looked like a dead duck that has fleet car written all over it. No one is surprised by this announcement. I am disappointed however that the big 3 can no longer make small and medium sized cars.
Anything in our family made by Volkswagen has been pure garbage. Problems were engine related, and electrical nightmares. Had two VW's and spent thousands on engine repairs. As for Chevy cars they have performed well, and have run for 16 to 20 years with no major problems. Our 1980 Malibu we sold back in 1996. It was sold to a local neighbor. It is still running.
I am sure it will come back as an electric from China. GM looks like they have some good electric sedans coming there relatively soon. Got one for my son several years ago and it was a great deal. Gets great gas mileage and looks great. Interior not that great, but works well with no issues at all. Do wish GM had more sedans though. Did own a Pontiac G8 and it was a great car. The Cadillac sedans are great, but aging. Hopefully the Cadillac Opulent Velocity concept will be a preview of the Cadillac sedans coming soon.
The Malibu is ok for a used car but there are much better choices on the market. I noticed as they get over 60k miles they tend to start having problems.
Honda has stolen the Malibu design LOL. And it's too early to get a 25 Camry. I will wait a year for them to get the bugs out. Toyota will jack up their prices now.
In 1998 I rented a Malibu from Hartsfield Airport. The gear selector on the floor and dash did not match. If the dash’s said D, the gear shift said 3rd. I figured out that the dash needed to be in N and gear shift in D in order to have overdrive. That car was a POS in every way.
My second eldest sister had the 7th gen Malibu, good God what a POS she later traded for a 2017 Altima that she had since new (she still has it by the way and she’s passing it on to my nephew)
Toyota, Honda and Nissan still have sedans to name a few, but I’m not surprised. Never owned one, drove it at work a few times but I’ll never buy a sedan again.
I drove a 2023 malibu 2lt, it drove OK though numb feeling, the interior was dreadul and cheap feeling and looked quite ugly in my opinion. lack of all kinds of compartments including glasses holder! And the floor carpet was coming up on the sides of a brand new car... And also the mpg is a lie. I averaged about 21 mpg where as i get 26 mpg with the same driving on my 2018 mazda 6 thats bigger and has more power. Also i sell parts for a living and constantly see these GM transmissions slipping whether it be the CVT or the 9 speed variant.
Oh no, anyway A few thoughts on the death of the sedan. I just went from a 2012 Honda Fit to a 2022 Civic. I have also driven my brother's 2015 Optima, my mom's 2017 Kia Sportage and my dad's Tacoma. The gap between the Sportage and the Civic in terms of how it is to drive, is noticeable, but it's not substantial. Heck (and I know this sounds insane to some people) I would argue that Sportage driving character has more in common with my new Civic then the Civic has with my old Fit. (mostly down to transmission and that generation of Sportage was pretty sporty.) So why get a sedan? 1. Fuel efficiency 2. Slight edge in performance 3. Affordability (i.e. less profit for the OEM) 4. Style (subjective) I don't think these move the hearts of men, and the data demonstrates it.
GM and Ford lobbied the US government in the Obama era that they could not compete with the Japanese sedan market. Meaning they could not turn a real profit. So, regulations / emissions were relaxed to allow crossover and SUV vehicles to get larger and produce a profit. Which is why the 2 automakers are doing well. Chrysler Dodge, Jeep went bankrupt in 2009 and were bought by FCA now Stellantis and are under European control.
Sedans still sell well but American car makers started marketing campaigns about how " no one is buying sedans and everyone is buying SUVs 😂" Basically, it lines their pockets at least via deceit to trick people thinking sedans are dying. Tesla model y sold 1.15 million cars globally. The Toyota Corolla sold 1.13 million cars.
Cann't understand this at all. Lincoln, Cadillac, Chevrolet etc, made many nice sedans, Usa heritage even. Ford skipped the bestselling Fiesta, Focus, Mondeo, Scorpio in Europe....marketshare sliding, factories closing. They sell rebadged VW'S and the Kuga...unbelievable. In the States the gap has been filled with sedans from Toyota, Lexus, Hyundai, Honda, Kia etc. A sedan is much more an effort to develop than a simple truck. With the focus on trucks and Chinese build Suv's, Gm, Ford will lose technical excellence as well. It is the beginni of the end.... . In a few years Ford will be part of VW and GM of Byd or Geely😢😢😢😢
Chevy ended the Malibu to focus on EVs. What a mistake. I’m so glad I sold my suburban Motor City home. I don’t see a strong successful future for the Big 3 in the coming years. That will have a negative impact on the southeast Michigan economy.
meh... GMs and the rest of the Big3 market shares have continued to drop. Most consumers want better quality than they are able to manufacture. Sedan market has tanked... Curious what the cops will start to drive... Where I live, Explorers are becoming more prominent.
Any car with any sort of large 5th door in the back is far more practical than a sedan. Call it a hatchback or SUV, whatever. Think of all those trips to places like Home Depot where you need a bigger opening to stuff your 8 foot lumber and other big things that would no way fit in a sedan. I've had Subaru wagons and small SUVs for over 40 years and would never consider a sedan anyway.
5:00 LOL i cannot trust a statement like that "Ive never driven this car but it sits below everything else..." (Devils advocate here) Not a fan of the car either but what fun would that be if we hopped in this car only to find its better than the others you just ragged on. I know the odds are highly unlikely but you admitted you have never driven it. Neither have I so i cant say but if you missed testing a model the fact is you missed it. THe data it represents is omitted from your assessment making your overall assessment IN COMPLETE. Sure odds are its a POS but it still should be reviewed. Dont actually do it that was rhetorical.
Gm will no longer make any sedans? None for Chevy or GMC(no change there) so does Buick make sedans? I know Cadillac has no plan to cut off sedans. So I guess only Cadillac!
My God do Chevy sedans look ugly in the US. Good thing we have Opel in Europe(though we joke about being to able to hear how it rusts when it's really quiet). We even have station wagons of the same cars.
Blame the Americans, All they want is crossovers 🤦🏽♂️ Sedans are more important now than ever because when their electrified whether if it's Hybrid or EV, they will get way more range and save fuel than any crossover and suv 💪🏽 I wasn't mad at ford for canceling their sedans because they were trash and ugly to begin with, The new accord is ugly but it's reliable atleast 🤷🏽♂️
I love how Ford and GM didn't update their sedans at all for over 10 years and then when they weren't selling said "buyers must not want sedans anymore"
IDK at what point was it decided that families must have a truck because a sedan is too small. Most of us grew up in families that only had sedans and we are just fine

A lot of women insist on driving huge SUVs especially after they have children which is why sedans are dying
The problem with mid size sedans is their priced so close to compact crossovers that most people just step up to that or step down to a compact sedan because they have grown in size that they are what a midsize was 10 years ago.
Vans and station wagons were more popular then too though

Maybe is because they try to emulate Japanese selling numbers. The race to make money.

It'll need effort put into it for a new update to be competitive with the new hybrid Accord and Camry. And GM apparently isn't interested.
Even after announcing they need to shift to some hybrids, and this used to be offered as one
@@markcoopers1930GM was interested but they decided to build a 2nd gen Bolt in the Kansas, Fairfax factory instead
So where was I when Chevy axed the Impala? The SS short run was wild though
I don't care to own the new ones but I also don't want them to go away. Corvette better never leave, I'm telling you though
Toyota fan-living it rn though- COME ON Stout small hybrid truck
Another sedan vanishes like a fart in the wind.
@BrianEugeneLee-xq2hy Malibu, Yes, CVT no like a case of herpes....
@BrianEugeneLee-xq2hy Really...??..do you smoke meth or have a head injury...???
@BrianEugeneLee-xq2hy Meth...???
@BrianEugeneLee-xq2hy Ah...you like large women.....!!!!
LORD ITS A MIRACLE! (Barra still remains in office)
MALIBU up and vanish like fart in the wind
So sad to hear that about the Malibu drives nice 🙂. They are getting rid of the Malibu.
That is so strange to me. I lived from Sep 21 to Oct 23 in AZ and TX and I swear I saw more Malibus than Accords, Altimas or Camrys. In fact, the company I used to work for gave Malibus and Equinox as company cars. Is a shame.
Would make sense, they sold over 130k in 2023 even 7 years after their last refresh.
I see more malibus, even older generations than any Japanese cars with the exceptions of altimos lol. Sad that now my car is its last of his familie
GM is cancelling all these sedans just in time for gas prices to shoot up to $6/gallon. Classic myopic GM.
I think GM would love to see that. Then, people can get into all of their new electric trucks and SUV's coming out now.
@@matthewfe6671 head injury...????
My high school PE teacher had 2008 Chevy Malibu LT its was a nice car til 2-3 years she trade it in got herself a 2013 Ford Edge SEL remind you this was during my high school years from 2009-13
Chevy is giving up all of sedans to giveway on SUV, CUV and Pickups.
Chevy, Subaru, VW, and Ford is following Mitsubishi's idea to kill Compact Hatchbacks/Sedans and Midsize Sedans to replace CUV and SUV for higher sales(SUVs are high risk on Incidents and Pedestrian Collisions).
the Malibu got "killed" off like twice since 1964. We are not living in unique times.
Kirk bro…didn’t really care nothing about that 💩 anyways ..a buddy of mine had one pure damn problems 😂
And nothing of value was lost.
Whoosh 💨- bruh
American JOBS - hellloo
@nextleveljourney6612 Car production is a business not a jobs program.
My mother loves her 2022 Malibu. I'd say she has found some value in it.
So Chevy is going the Ford route, yipee😒
American car manufacturers are weird
Both of the current CEOs need to be replaced because they don’t understand the customer wants variety
Honestly good. Glad to see the Camry, Accord and Sonata become the top midsize sedans. Which tbh when weren’t they.
There were no tears shed for the Chevrolet Malibu.
They should have just updated it. I believe there are still plenty of people looking for a reasonably priced non suv . I feel down the road G.M. will bring it back.
The Malibu still outsells all GM EVs combined.
Malibu - 150,000
GM EVs -75,000
How much of 150k - is FLEET sales? Probably 90-100k.
Thus - this proves nobody wants a sedan except Hertz or Avis car rental stores. YOU DRIVE AN SUV 🚙 while typing that comment out right?
I’m surprised that generation is almost 10 years old
In 2 years chevy will no longer be able to use the Camaro in nascar based on the rules. Without a sedan in production, they may have to leave the sport.
They'll have some crappy EV sedan or use the Bolt for nascar lol
@KirkKreifels OH God, if that happens, the meatheads of nascar will crumble and need a safe space so they don't melt.
The 1973-77 was nice. It had a big car ride and a lot of passenger/cargo room.
I kinda wish they made Malibu better. It was the first car i ever drove so I kinda had a soft spot for it. But we’ll, it is what it is
Other than the Corvette, Chevy doesn’t build a single desirable vehicle. Chevy as a brand name is garbage: it carries the connotation of presenting under-engineered, outdated, embarrassing-to-own, last choice vehicles
People love Tahoes and Suburbans…and the Silverado
Well I guess a lot of unknowledgeable people are buying Chevy Trax's nowadays.
Hopefully the Cadillac Opulent Velocity concept will be a preview of the Cadillac sedans coming soon.
it was a garbage can anyway
😂😂…could’ve never said it better
I agree
Sorry, but you’re absolutely wrong. You need to look up the reliability reports.
@@FaeDruid man ain’t nothing reliable about dem damn cars man..unless u keep fixing on urs😁
@@alwayne5932your opinion isn’t FACT nor is it Receipts. 🧾
I happily drive a 2017.
I won’t be surprised if sedans make a comeback in the future lol
GM Authority says that we can see a 10th gen Malibu in 2026 or 2027. Maybe it could be built in one of their Korean or Chinese plants
GM authority is the only publication mentioning that. Safe to say they are wrong, all the other reporting are correct.
Kirk, The Malibu model name is as old as me.......🤔
What ever will budget rent a car do.
They'll just change to using Trailblazers.
Rent Camry? Accords?
We own the cars it's fine car for daily use
The SUV era are really begun now has it? No it because the price is still expensive.
Oh no, anyway
A few thoughts on the death of the sedan.
(mostly down to transmission and that generation of Sportage was pretty sporty.)
So why get a sedan?
1. Fuel efficiency
2. Slight edge in performance
3. Affordability (i.e. less profit for the OEM)
4. Style (subjective)
I don't think these move the hearts of men, and the data demonstrates it.
Chevrolet needs more hybrids
Chevy should have kept with the Impala and discontinued this YEARS ago
I think they killed it when they started making them front wheel drive.
A car company that doesn't make cars... unbelievable!! What clown is running GM???
its a woman what else do you expect...????
GM and Ford lobbied the US government in the Obama era that they could not compete with the Japanese sedan market. Meaning they could not turn a real profit.
So, regulations / emissions were relaxed to allow crossover and SUV vehicles to get larger and produce a profit. Which is why the 2 automakers are doing well.
Chrysler Dodge, Jeep went bankrupt in 2009 and were bought by FCA now Stellantis and are under European control.
Sedans still sell well but American car makers started marketing campaigns about how " no one is buying sedans and everyone is buying SUVs 😂"
Basically, it lines their pockets at least via deceit to trick people thinking sedans are dying. Tesla model y sold 1.15 million cars globally. The Toyota Corolla sold 1.13 million cars.
now you can buy an Equinox! lol GM should have gone out of business years ago instead of being bailed out.
Stop killing sedans, sorry but I'd rather not look like a soccer mom driving crossovers and SUVS...
Chevy ended the Malibu to focus on EVs. What a mistake. I’m so glad I sold my suburban Motor City home. I don’t see a strong successful future for the Big 3 in the coming years. That will have a negative impact on the southeast Michigan economy.
I have none. The closest I get is a 71 Cutlass supreme 442 that I had…lol
Malibu could've been a nice car if reliability was an A+
meh... GMs and the rest of the Big3 market shares have continued to drop. Most consumers want better quality than they are able to manufacture. Sedan market has tanked... Curious what the cops will start to drive... Where I live, Explorers are becoming more prominent.
Hertz will probably buy the rest of the production run for a good price to replace those tesla model 3! 😀
Dude I would haul 8 footers in my old Malibu all the time🤣
5:00 LOL i cannot trust a statement like that "Ive never driven this car but it sits below everything else..." (Devils advocate here) Not a fan of the car either but what fun would that be if we hopped in this car only to find its better than the others you just ragged on.
Lol.
Marry Bara strikes again, first the Camaro and now Malibu, a car that's outselling their EV's.
Camaro is likely to comeback as an EV sports sedan
Gm will no longer make any sedans? None for Chevy or GMC(no change there) so does Buick make sedans? I know Cadillac has no plan to cut off sedans. So I guess only Cadillac!
Malibu still exist now? I thought it’s long gone.
I wonder what took them so long to get rid of it? Oh well.
The forced push to EV
I always think of the Malibu Stacy toy from the Simpsons riff on the barbie mobile.
Nothing of value was lost
CAMRY THE KING INDEED! American auto industry is broke! I was a big fan of Chevy Impalas for rentals ofcourse if Toyota were unavailable.
