Something I don't understand: A normal hit squeezes the end of the blade, causing the two contacts to connect and the circuit to close, which causes the hit indicator to light up. But why doesn't the hit indicator light up when you trigger the hit on the opponent's guard? The circuit closes in exactly the same way, but the lamp does not light up. Can someone explain to me how this technical system works? Thanks!

The guard is conductive. I'm not sure which one (tip or guard) sends electrical signal, but one of them do, and tell the machine not to light up. Some faulty guards will have touches registered when tips hit them. Hope that helps!
