Grudges are nothing more than our own self-imposed prison. We can choose to hold on to our grudges and allow them to drag us down, or we can choose to let them go and transmute the negative into something positive.

This album is introspective. It's likely more about himself not being able to let go of the anger, spite and hatred he feels for someone. The mood of the music to me fits so well because it feels like inner turmoil. It calms down at points, which feels like the beginnings of letting go of the grudge, then comes back full force during the climax of the song, as all of those negative emotions often come back to us when we think they're gone. This song helped me get over some negative anchors I had been carrying around for years.

My favorite song..... I'm turning 28 so I am in my saturn return years and I'm having difficulty letting go of certain things..... it's so painful... it's extremely personal and my ego is fighting tooth and nail to keep the old narrative going..... a part of me deeply wants to let go so badly. I'm having difficulty giving away the stone... so much pride and it is hurting me.

This song was actually inspired by Galileo and his struggle against the Catholic Church, specifically on the issue of the Earth orbiting the Sun (as opposed to the Vatican's previously established standard of the Earth being the center of the universe). The movements of Saturn were used as part of Galileo's testimony that the Sun is the center, not the Earth.
The scream towards the end represents Galileo's outrage when he recieves news on his deathbed, that he has NOW been absolved of his accused heresy, and his house arrest is now ended. Again, on his Deathbed is when he was absolved, told he was right, and that he can legally exit his house.

Your right, funny thing though - Saturn is Binah in Kabbalah but they also consider Earth (Malkuth) as a lower register of Saturn. If you look at it 'choose one or ten' - you could maybe read that as choose Kether or Malkuth (Earth or absolute transcendence). Charismatic Voice said she heard it was all references to Galileo and the Catholic Church. I think Maynard likes to overload his tracks with all kinds of plausible meanings that weave through the lyrics - so it's probably safe to shrug and say maybe it's a 'both and'.

Plus, if you have watched his videos for any period of time, you would know that this man is very intellectually curious. (See his explanation of RATM first album cover). This whole album is about self reflection. Tools music was very angry before this album. Of course they didn't fully let that go but there is a lot more self reflection in later albums. I don't know if Maynard had a specific grudge in mind when he wrote this but I think he was trying to let go of a lot more anger in general

I always took Saturn to reference the Roman myth. As one story goes, Saturn believed his ten children would someday overthrow him, so he decides to eat them. The goddess Rhea replaces one of the ten children with a stone, which Saturn eats on accident. That single saved kid was Jupiter, who eventually fulfilled the prophecy.
Personally, I enjoy the song from this point of view more than the astrological one lol.

There is a lot of talk about the song and the album. You have to start at their beginning, at least at Undertow. Tool's albums have been a chronicle of that process of letting go of trauma, deep-rooted trauma. While it can be appreciated here in this album, their entire discography is the process. You have to start at the beginning.

If you haven't noticed by now, 90% percent of their songs that Maynard wrote, are about riffs within the band itself. They have personal beefs within the group, one including the amount of time that the rest of the band takes for their personal artistic touches to each song or album. The process of making their albums are made depending on the music that they create, and then he writes lyrics based on what he hears or feels. If they take too long, then he feels animosity towards his band mates and he displays his dismay within his lyrics. But on the other hand, if they hold out on creating their parts, then the grudge is withheld and it provides him with a driving force that is Tool!!!

Here is my own larger interpretation of this song. I have always assumed the band name Tool to be indicative of their intention of using the band as a tool for improvement (with a double entendre of also being a dick joke, to make sure they don't take themselves too seriously). Being such, it seems to be apparent that Maynard had a very rocky relationship with humans and God as a whole. With that, this is sort of what I have always assumed this song was, a tool to get closer to God by acknowledging his grudge with God and God's creations. Again, these are just some ramblings of a guy who has been listening to Tool for almost 30 years. I could be far off the mark, but it feels like a subject they may tackle, with the sort of ambiguous honesty I have always assumed Maynard's lyrics hold. I think Maynard often is using a form of self analysis where he stands outside of himself and uses you as I. Sort of like he is usig his shadowed Anima and his anger to attempt to point out the flaws of his ego.
    Sorry for the ramblings
