- Voted as Dancer of the Year by Dance Europe's readership from a shortlist of ten dancers chosen by our writers, António Casalinho's career path to date has been meteroric. Trained at the esteemed Academie Anarella in Leiria, the Portuguese dancer has won numerous awards, including at the YAGP and the Prix de Lausanne, and joined the Bayerisches Staatsballett as soloist straight from school in 2021. He was promoted to first soloist in 2023 and to principal following his debut as James in Pierre Lacotte's La Sylphide last November, when DANCE EUROPE met up with the exceptional dancer in Munich.

For years - since he was a young teenager - it’s been obvious Antonio has a talent far beyond any of his peers developing as artists or even greater than the greatest principals dancing right now. He is this century’s Nureyev - not in style or type. But in genius. Genius is a word to bestow in a dancer who is so much more special than all the others. In a way that defies description although we can see it. Antonio is not only technically more perfect than all the other dancers that perfection comes from how he was put together (physically), how his mind works, how the music affects him, what he wants from himself. He talks about the characters and their complexities and inhabiting these roles (that’s what made Nureyev so special - his dancing body was a vessel to carry this incredible musicality, artistry as a dancer-actor). To develop the role with not only a perfect technique but a deep understanding of music and the choreography is what perhaps more than one dancer thinks of bit only one dancer in a hundred years can put it all together - understanding the multiple complexities - and this is what makes this young man a gift to the world and a genius
