- I love this song soo much and of course the queen, Dodie Clark, so I had to make a lil video for her. I hope you guys enjoy it! :)

Heyy so I made a theory about this song but I deleted my comment on the actual video for this song, so I'm going to put it here to (maybe) get it a little more attention?
I believe this song is not about online friendships/relationships or any kind of relationship in that sense. I was thinking about this song a while ago, because I was desperate to kind of realize what it meant..and then I got this idea:
I believe it's about dodie and her depression. The song title, "Dear Happy" is kind of an explanation as to why I think this. It's meant to be a duet because one person plays "Happy", (Thomas) and the other is the person struggling with depression (dodie).
She's singing about how she hasn't been happy for so long she doesn't know if it'd even be worth it anymore, and how she is going to push past that thought and see if she'll meet "happy" again. I'm going to try to give a brief rundown of every lyric's meaning:
"I missed you dearly, thought I was nearly there forever, at last together" - She is singing about losing her happiness, and feeling as if she'd be stuck in that depressive mindset forever, and how she is finally reunited with happiness.
"Is our time fleeting? Is even meeting a healthy idea, or am I getting too near?" -- The feeling of self-doubt creeps in, after the first line, where she seemed optimistic about the situation. She realizes that things could go wrong, and she'd be left feeling even worse after happiness leaves her again.
"Don't try to fight it, I'm here for the night, And I'll be waiting for you until we meet again"-- Happy comes in, saying that they'll be there for "the night", which means the time frame where dodie feels as if she needs to fight her mind and be happy. She might be doing something that night, seeing friends, playing a show, etc and she doesn't want sadness to ruin her night. Happy is reassuring her that even when he leaves again, he'll be waiting for her when she gets out of the bad mindset again.
"I know it's scary, but don't be wary, If we don't have that long, let's not waste it feeling wrong"-
Happy is explaining that he won't be there forever, so she needs to stop worrying about when he'll leave. Depression is always there, lingering, wanting back into her brain that she's desperately trying to protect. She can feel it pounding on the locked doors of her mind, wanting in, and Happy is telling her she needs not worry, for he'll be here as long as he can and she shouldn't waste that time in self doubt and wariness.
"This isn't the end, I'm your lifelong friend, Sure it's been awhile but I'll be here when you smile"-
When happiness leaves her, he's reassuring her that he'll be there forever. He might leave for long periods of time, but when she starts truly smiling and laughing and being genuinely happy, she'll know he's there.
"Would you mind staying?"- Dodie is pleading for happy to stay, because it just feels so nice to feel free, like depression's reins aren't attached to her anymore.
"It's getting late, but I will visit you soon."- Happy's leaving her after a night of feeling great, but he's again reassuring her that he won't be gone forever.
"So just try to get through."- They're both telling each other that they aren't always connected, they will never be forever together, but they can make it. It's hard, and they both know it, but they also know that they're strong and when they finally meet again they'll be even stronger together.

I cried because it reminds me of my brother. He died because of bone cancer. The last time I talk to him is about what happens when you die. My family adopted a clone of my brother. He has the same personality, the face almost match, but the name was different. my parents and sibling got over with it but Im still sober.
That's kind of twisted and I personally feel like that's like pretending the person you loved never disappeared but also as if that unique person's life experience didn't matter as he just kind of got "replaced".
Meanwhile, if this 'clone' finds this out, he will surely feel like he's just a replacement for this now dead family member and hate himself because of it. It's just not healthy no matter what way I look at it.

They said it at the same time that’s why it sounds confusing.
i think that's because Thomas plays happy while Dodie plays someone struggling to keep her happiness with her for as long as she can.

At first i thought the Thomas messed up when dodie said "your here for the night" when he said "im here for the night" but when dodie explained the song is about how shes taking to her happiness (Thomas) and if he can stay a little longer before he goes because dodies depression will take over but her happiness is letting her know to enjoy the times hes pressent and knowing hes gonna come back is something to be happy about

my best friend recently passed away, i was really sad about it and still am really sad. a couple months ago, my older brother showed me this song and we sang it in front of our parents. i never thought that it would have a special place in my heart but since my best friends passing, i have found a meaning and it is now a very special song to me. my best friend moved to america, we couldnt see eachother anymore so we had to text and call. she promised that she would come and visit me for christmas, the "would you mind staying" lyric just makes me cry because i kept on asking her how long she could stay. this year, she started changing personalities and getting sad. she finally told me that she had been battling depression , i tried to help her as much as i could but it wasnt enough. she ended up killing herself 6 months after she had told me about it, the "ill be waiting for you until we meet again" lyric is also very special now. i always tell her up above that i will be with her soon, and just to try and hang on until i pass away and meet her again in heaven. all thanks to my brother, i now have a song to connect to my best friend with. i now play this pretty much daily in memory of her, and i hope that she is waiting for me.

Hhhhhhhh, this song actually pains me to listen to but it’s a bittersweet sort of pain.
This summer I met an incredible guy online and much like others I fell in love. At least as much love as I could given my age. We talked all the damn time, often keeping the other up at ungodly hours of the night because we lived an ocean apart and the time zones were always ever so slightly difficult to get around.
We had actually dated for only a month of us knowing each other for another two and at some point I sent him this song as it really reminded me of him. Now I can’t listen to it without thinking of him and the little time we did have together. I didn’t want to break up but I had to to avoid being in massive amounts of trouble but I regret it. I really, really regret it.
So, if you happen to see this, I just hope we can meet again under normal circumstances... I’m sorry

I have debilitating headaches and brain fog daily. It has stolen away everything that I once had. The thing is, it’s some kind of sleep disorder , and no one has been able to figure it out. At around 2am, when the world is asleep , I start feeling better. I become awake, and in way less head pain. And I’m sitting there, angry because I want to be well during the day, knowing that as soon as my body falls asleep, I’ll be totally nonfunctional -- horrid headaches and brain fog , until 1am the next night. But no one has been able to help me. As soon as it’s not something doctors can easily diagnose, they stop trying. I’ve known this song for a few years and finally realize how much I relate to it. For me, “ happy” is being able to think. Not having a headache so bad and sharp it makes me nauseous all day. Sometimes I think, if it’s all going to come back, the sickness that has stolen my whole life, when I go to sleep, what’s the point of using those few hours of wellness and lack of shooting headache at night I have and trying to enjoy them ? God, this song. I’m sitting here with a splitting headache shooting across my face and crying

Though I understand this song is about depression and an imagined encounter with happiness, I still let it remind me of them. They were my happy, after all. Early on, they showed me this song, and I had no idea that it would- years later- come to mean my last night with them. Though they are not a part of my life now, I am living with a part of them, and they will always be there when I smile.

Not saying this is an awful song because it is FAAARRRRR from that it's gorgeous and wonderful! I just wanted to say their voices sound...separate in some parts like, their voice aren't flowing in sync/aren't exactly mixing like I hoped they would but it picks up a bit more into the video and it makes me feel all tingly and nice
I notice that! But it's kind of a constant with Dodie's stuff, and to me I feel like it sort of adds to that soft, rustic aesthetic she's got with her music ya know? It's not studio-perfect but that makes it so much more real
