The computer screen could be a touch-screen point-of-sale system, and the small register you're referring to could be an electronic credit card swipe machine (on the first build). Very cleverly done in my opinion.

I have this set and love it, the main build is gorgeous. I have it on a green base plate with a little park area in front with seats. It perfectly holds its own in front of my creator diner.
I agree about the modular system. I tend to find a set up I like and switch out the jumpers for normal connections so it stays there. I don't mind because it gives me loads of spare gray flat and jumper tiles for pavements around it.
