  • Flapper programmed in Mastercam 24 using a Samsung Dual spindle lathe with live tooling and Y-axis.
    This Flapper is made from Super duplex, a really hard and tough type of stainless steel.
    Super duplex is commonly used in oil and gas industry because of its chemical resistance to corrosion.
    This part was originally made in the lathe and them finished with the mill but we wanted to try to make it in the lathe entirely.

    What is the benefit with starting on the sub spindle first, then transferring to the main spindle?

      I had a hardened collet in the main spindle and was only holding .03" on material, I only have soft jaws in the sub side.

      @@Blown350 Aren't those collets meant for bar stock though? I heard from Royal that they recommend at least half of the collet's clamping length to be engaged.

    Why not just make it in the mill entirely instead of having to use those live tools?

      When all you have is a hammer, everything is a nail? I could see if if concentricity or circularity mattered, but I doubt they do for this part
